“Brilliant stay even without the sunshine”

A week at this hotel was sunshine itself. Situated in the Old Town area this hotel is perfectly placed for the local restaurants and cafes. Delightful staff, attentive but not overbearing: ready to help when asked and their guidance was spot-on. Breakfast was a buffet style and very relaxed too. No rush, no fuss just good food. The room was comfortable with adequate space for the luggage we had taken with us. Just be aware of the rugs, they don't half shift when you stand on them! Once caught, twice shy... A proper bath too! What a delight after a hard day in the hills walking the pathways. The weather for the week was overcast with rain on a couple of days, that said we were out every day. The evening short walk down to one of the many good quality restaurants meant a good nights sleep was guaranteed.

Madeira is a rock in the Atlantic; everywhere on the island seems to be uphill via very twisty roads. That said, there are some stunning views that just would not be there if the island was flat! Funchal is undergoing major civil engineering work along the fore shore. This involves the immediate transportation system. Some of the work is to create new "beach" areas, others are to rebuild the flood damaged parts of the town infrastructure. The noise from these works can be heard on the terrace to the hotel but is background rather than in your face. There are hotels within yards (meters) of the construction work - I have pity the occupants.

We had checked out recent reviews before booking: generally the small niggles are still there, 1.50 euro for the use of the room safe and the room lighting system. These though did not detract from the overall excellent stay.

We would definitely book again, finding a good deal to recommend this hotel.

Second time here after 5 years and once again delighted with the place. There are a few little niggles none of which would spoil your stay and balancing the "ups" against the minor "downs", it's a winner. Let's get the little minus points out of the way:
1. If you can't manage hills, this place is perhaps not for you.
2. The remote control lighting system in the rooms is a real 'faff'. Confusing and with no advantage that I see over normal switches.
3. Would like breakfast tea/coffee & toast delivered to the table instead of parading up and down collecting breakfast in instalments.
4. 1.50 euros per day for the safe is a bit of a cheek for a hotel of this type.
5. Bedside rugs are a little slippery on the wooden floors. Surfed a few feet a couple of times!
6. Updated flat screen TVs wouldn't go amiss.
So; on to the "why stay here" items:-
1. The views of the harbour and town are fantastic. The harbour, cruise ships coming and going, the town and the hills beyond. Drinks on the terrace or a quiet sit on your balcony - it's all there in front of you.
2. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Beautifully mannered and courteous without being 'over the top' and obviously looking to boost any possible tips coming their way.
3. It's one of the few hotels near to the old town with it's restaurants and bars whilst retaining a quiet atmoshere. No need for taxis to get into town, it's a stroll. Although coming back is uphill. There's a big hotel just down the hill but beware! Long term sea defence work is right on their doorstep and VERY noisy, starting at 07.30am.
4. Pool area and grounds excellent.
5. Barring tea/coffee issue, breakfast is very good. Fresh and hot. Cannot agree with some of the other reviews that marked it down.
So, that's it. Well worth staying here. My only slight concern would be that the next few years will see the place needing a pretty comprehensive refurbishment.

Great holiday- Feb 2013

Great points:

- Perfect location, close to all restaurants
- Beautiful setting in a charming old building
- Excellent breakfast, served either indoor or outdoor ( weather permitting )
- Excellent restaurant with very helpful and friendly staff
- Friendliness of reception staff

I would recommend you ask for a room with sea view, although it is a more expensive option.

Avoid at all costs the half board option for this hotel. We stayed for a week in February at the Quinta Bela Sao Tiago on the basis of the location of the hotel and the generally positive comments in Trip Advisor. We had to take the half board option as this was the only one available to us. We’d noticed that hardly any of the previous positive postings had been made by people staying on half board - nearly everyone seemed to be taking the B&B option - and now we can see why! But first, the positives. The location of the hotel is excellent. The loveliest part of Funchal is the old quarter and this hotel is very close to it. Staff were generally pleasant and the breakfasts were average. The big problem was the evening meal! There is a set menu, ridiculously ‘priced’ at nearly 50 euros, although we couldn’t imagine anyone actually visiting the hotel for an evening and paying this amount when you can dine superbly in the local restaurants for half the cost. Dinner includes a starter with examples in the week we stayed ranging from slices of processed cheese and tomatoes on one evening to a ‘seafood’ opener on another constituting a thin membrane of something unrecognisable over a piece of lettuce. The ‘fish’ course was a slice of something deep frozen usually accompanied by boiled potatoes and cauliflower or some other worthy vegetable. For the ‘meat’ course dishes served included tough and fatty duck pieces, an espetada [skewer] of floppy pineapple bookending two or three portions of disgusting pork and a ‘chicken curry’ which was a blob of rice in the middle of the plate surrounded by small pieces of overcooked chicken with some sickly yellow drizzle over it. The desserts were recycled fruit form that morning’s breakfast or an indifferent pudding of the kind you get in a cheap sea front lunch deal. This, by the way, in an allegedly four star hotel. What made these pathetic offerings all the more surreal is that they are brought to your table under stainless silver domes which are ceremoniously uncovered by waiters saying one-two-three as they do so. The dining room was almost empty every evening. We were grateful our two daughters weren’t with us because they’d have been on the floor laughing at the Faulty Towerishness of it all. The wine list was seriously over priced and wine by the glass was measured in mean little quantities. Joking apart, we feel deeply aggrieved with Thomas Cook with whom we booked this with holiday as we can’t see how they would have promoted this half board offer if they had done a proper quality assurance check. We didn’t complain because we weren’t going to take it out on the hotel staff but we gave up and began eating out in a couple of the wonderful local restaurants. If you’re staying in Funchal, book a hotel in the old quarter but avoid this one unless you can get it on a bed and breakfast basis.

We had seen this hotel when it had first opened but never ever had the opportunity to use it. We loved it, had a rather nice balcony room looking over the bay. We made use of the balcony each morning after breakfast whilst we collected our thoughts to make arrangements for the rest of the day. Breakfast, well it was like a merry go round, first you had to get your own tea, then your milk etc. then cook your toast then get the hot breakfast, if that was your choice, when like us you did not come down until 0900 lifting the lids on the hot food and finding it looking somewhat tired was not what was to be expected from a lovely Quinta such as this!! In most good hotels who have decided to allow you to get your own breakfast, they serve the tea or coffee and also the toast which in this case would have made all the difference. it felt like and was, to my mind, a self service cafe other than that you could not fault it but for us this is not a 'I must go back' feeling.

Room Tip: Anything above the garden rooms are most certainly better.

This hotel was in a very good location,not far from the old town with good views overlooking Funchai,the harbour and cable car. The service was excellent and the staff were most welcoming. Although we ate out sometimes,the menu of the hotel was very good and if you did'nt know what something was,they did try to tell you what it was with hilarious results sometimes. we had a great week there,visiting the botannical gardens and tropical gardens which both can be reached by the cable car which goes from the front,right over funchai and up to the top of the hills. Beware when you visit the small kiosks when you go to book a trip as some of them are really to do with timeshares so do your homework first. We had booked one but our agent who was with Prerstige Holidays warned us about it so we didnt go and went on a trip which she organised. All in all,a good island but i think a week is long enough. A really nice restaurant to eat at is called 'portao' which was a 5nin walk from the hotel. Very good service and food.

We stayed here in 2006 and returned this year. This is still an excellent hotel being located, in our opinion, in the best location in Funchal, close to restaurants, the cable car, bus terminal and market with a great view over the harbour. There are building works going on way down on the sea front but these were far enough away that they did not detract from our stay and provided an extra point of interest to watch. We were "upgraded " to a junior suite on the rooftop which was a huge room divided into two with sloping roofs and a bit dark but with good views from the rooftop terrace. However, there was no wind break (or for the summer, shade) so it was not possible to sit outside as much as would have been the case with the regular sea view rooms which have a side wall for protection. If visiting again I would definitely choose this hotel but decline the upgrade if offered.

We used the local restaurants every night. The Elstresa do Mar on the corner was our favourite for good value; we had a poor meal at the highly rated O Jango but perhaps we were just unlucky.

We used Madeira Airport Transfers for return taxi transfers which were very efficient. We also did a half day tour to the Nun's Valley with Pride of Madeira tours. Our guide Ezekial was excellent and went out of his way to go the extra mile taking us off the usual tourist circuit and giving us lots of time. Some of us did the walk down from the viewpoint to the village and he collected us at the bottom. I would recommend them.

Apart from the various gardens (don't miss the Monte tropical gardens at the top of the cable car), a good day out is to take a bus to the Quinta do Palheiro gardens and after visiting these, walk up to the Levada dos Tornos, walk to Romeiros and catch the bus back to Funchal (or get off the Levada at Quinta do Pomar and walk down to the Botanical Gardens and bus back from there. The Hortensia Tea house on the Levada makes a pleasant stop for a snack and or drink with views over Funchal.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a full sea view on an upper floor. Better than a Junior Suite as the Suite balco...
