“Our time share in the Residence Porto Mare”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2011

We visit three times a year on our time share which is a part of the Porto Mare hotel but has its own reception and apartments.
The whole hotel complex is listed as four star but its better than some five star hotels we have been in.
Wonderfull gardens, two lovely outdoor pools plus two more indoors, one with a spa facility. More than enough bars and restuarants both on site and in the surrounding streets just on the outskirts of Funchal which itself is full of character and a great place to explore as is the rest of the island..

Room Tip: Most rooms face the sea but and we have an apartment on a garden shared by about 10 others.

Thank you for your comments about your previous stay at The Residence. You were very kind when compared us with other hotels of higher category and shared it with such a vast audience.

Hope to meet you in a near future,

I just returned from the Porto Mare Residence with my husband on 12th September and just loved it there. I actually felt quite sad leaving! Our room overlooking the beautiful gardens was perfect. It was really comfortable quiet (except for the Saturday night celebrations at the hotel next door which was unavoidable) and very spacious for a studio apartment. The kitchen was very well 'kitted out' even although we didnt make full use of it, but everything was there if you needed it. I was most impressed that we didn't have to get up early in the morning to find a sunbed or parasol as there were plenty around, and thoroughly enjoyed swimming in the pool without being bombarded with beach balls etc. All in all we had a really relaxing stress free holiday and would love to return. I have already recommended the complex to my colleagues at work!!

I also take the opportunity to apologize for the inconvenience caused by the event organized by Clube Naval, I am forwarding all the messages to the even promoters and local authorities so they know the consequences of their decisions.

This was our fourth trip back to the Porto Mare complex and the first time we've stayed two weeks. The facilities are as impressive as ever - everything spotless and well prepared. The staff really are extraordinary - very friendly and helpful - our daughter was particularly impressed that they spotted her birthday and left a bottle of bubbly in the apartment on ice to celebrate. The celebrations for 'wine week' were much appreciated, and the excellence of the trips that week for us easily outweighed the noise problems from the hotel party next door on the Saturday.

When you leave this hotel, you have a great feeling about leaving sth ‘like paradise’. We spent 8 marvellous days in the complex, and that was due to the people that worked there.
First of all, I have to speak about Pedro Macedo, one of the four receptionist that we’ve met during our stay. Maybe the best person at one of the most demanding places. I am very glad to have listened and followed to all his advices from Day 1.
He proposed restaurants that we’ve really enjoyed our dinners (Do Forte, Mozart, 2 other restaurants in Camara De Lobos, called Vila do Peixe (!!!) and Vila Da Carne). He gave us information about where to go to drink the best ‘nikita’ in town, he gave us advice about tasting other spirits that you must have when being in Madeira. He even spoke to us in our language when we checked in at the Hotel, sth that made us feel extremely ‘at home’ and surprised us. Afterwards, we learned that all the employees there speak fluently English, and some of them (one of them the above mentioned spoke 3 or 4 languages…)
Pedro even gave us information about where to park when going to the restaurants in order to find free parking lots (after 20.00 you can park without paying even in the blue lines).
During our stay we had a lot of questions about their culture, their mentality and the way Portoguese are dealing with their lives, and he explained to us everything trying to be as helpful as possible.
The truth is that we can’t thank enough Pedro, but it would be wrong not to thank everyone else that worked in the complex.
I have also to mention a great chef (she’s a beautiful smiling woman) who several mornings prepared our omelets. She made me feel ‘at home’ giving the best of herself, even though she had to work with a lot of colleagues.
I have to underline the general feeling of our staying there. Great hotel, big rooms and studios, amazing gardens, space for all to enjoy, 5 pools, 2 Jacuzzis, Gym with Technogym products…Everything was excellent… I really look forward to returning to Madeira…and to Porto Mare…

Room Tip: Corner studios are the best!

Stayed in Eden Mar hotel last year (1st. time in Madeira) and decided to buy one bed timeshare for one week in Sept., so this year, 2011, was first year in the Residence. Everything was as good as we hoped it would be. Transfers to and from airport were smooth, staff were friendly and efficient, facilities at hotel are great and the apartment is spacious and spotlessly clean. The location of the Residence is very good, being on the main road into Funchal yet very quiet. Might not be too good for anyone with walking difficulties as it is quite hilly around the hotel. Would recommend 'Il Basilico' restaurant on the promenade in front of the Residence(lovely italian). Only one complaint, on the Saturday before we left, the hotel next door had a end of year party, started at midnight and went on until about five in the morning so no sleep that night. My wife and I complained to the timeshare management along with many other clients and found out that this party has happened for the last few years and no one seems to be able to do anything to stop it.This surely will put people off going there for this week of the year. A great pity as everthing else in the complex is great. Maybe it will change by next time, here's hoping!

Room Tip: Apartments on garden level are great for sun worshippers who don't want to go to the pool everyd...

Dear Guest,

I am really sorry for the disturbance caused by the Club Naval event, that took place on the 10th September. We had a similar situation a year ago and we did complaint to the local authorities about. All messages left from clients were forwarded to the promoters and authorities who authorized the party. Unfortunately they did not take it in consideration and once again a year later repeated the mistake!!

Since last Sunday the 11th, that I am collecting all the comments from our guests and on a daily basis I am sending it to the city hall authorities, local tourism board, police and the president of Club Naval.

Next week I will be having a meeting with Club Naval, the promoter of the event, to discuss the matter and once again let them know that this is an unacceptable situation, for our guests, for the hotel and for the destination. Hopefully next year we won’t be having a third event .

Also take the opportunity to thank you for sending us feedback about the positive things you have experienced in our hotel and really hope to meet you in a future stay.

With best regards,

Muito Obrigado,

Antonio Pais

This was our 6th visit and, as usual, we were not disappointed. The same friendly and efficient staff, wonderful facilities.
Although we don't spend a lot of time in our apartment, it was nice to have BBC1 & 2 available and also ITV1. Wifi has not been extended yet to all the apartments but I am sure it will come and it is easy to access in the Receptions, the Porto Fino etc.
Another new, and welcome, innovation were the mattress toppers. I always sleep well there but this time it was even better.

Only one quibble - since we first started going to Madeira in 1997 and the Porto Mare in 2005, there are more children around. Unfortunately, some neglectful parents do not supervise them and some very young children were using the interior pools unaccompanied. This is dangerous for them - and the hotel - and, if anything happened to a child (God forbid), I am sure the parents would not blame themselves. Also, using large inflatables are not supposed to be used in the pools and in the interior pools these are a particular nuisance.
All in all, a wonderful time and we hope to return again soon.

Dear Sir,

Many thanks for your review posted on TripAdvisor about your holidays.
It is good to know that overall you have enjoyed another stay in The Residence.

About the "minor point" raised, please be informed that we have already reinforced the info about prohibition of inflations devices manly in the indoor pool of Porto Mare.
As you know we have in the Vila Porto Mare complex two indoors, plus two outdoor pools and a children outdoor pool.
Hope to welcome you on your next visit,

With best regards,

Muito Obrigado

First trip to Madeira, stayed with family in their timeshare in The Residence. I certainly wasn't disappointed, transfer from airport was organised and efficient, on arrival at the hotel staff were very friendly - room wasn't available yet but staff took our bags to room and permitted us to leave things in room and use safe, leaving us to enjoy hotel facilities whilst room was prepared.

Self catering apartment was clean and spacious, and well equipped.

I had a birthday during my stay and after seeing my birthday cards displayed in the room, the lovely hotel staff left a bottle of bubbly in an ice bucket, with champagne glasses. Above and beyond their duty, and a lovely gesture which touched me.

The entire complex was beautiful, gardens amazing, plenty space for all to enjoy, never seemed crowded. A variety of pools (and temperatures!) to suit all, again - never seemed crowded.

Staff throughout were friendly and always willing to help.

The inclusive classes were fab, I sampled Pilates and Watergym, would recommend both.
There were many other facilities I did not have time to sample in my week stay...certainly plenty of choice.
The trips available through the hotel were also enjoyable, reasonably priced and thoroughly informative (I did a Levada walk, with local tour guide, and open top bus tour of local area).

Would love to return to The Residence to explore further, cannot fault my stay.
