“Grand by name grand it is!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2008

This is a 5 star hotel. It is called the Pestana Grand and It is!

Great Hotel Great Staff really friendly relaxed hotel to spend your holiday.

Its a quiet location with easy walks into Funchal.
The Spa centre is also a great place to relax.

We had a terrific holiday and cant wait to go back.

Places to eat nearby most very good quality especially the Real Canoa 20 yards from hotel for steaks on a stone plate and skewared steak.

If you want a relaxed place to stay which is clean with friendly staff who speak good english _ better than my portugese- this is the place.

I have nothing bad at all to say about this hotel!!!

This was a late booking, and was found in the adverts at the back of one of the Sunday papers. It was a very good hotel. The room was bright, clean and spacious. It overlooked the driveway and was on the 2nd floor, but it was very quiet.

The swimming pools were beautiful with a view of the sea, and breakfast was on the patio overlooking both. You can walk from the hotel into the centre of Funchal, it will take about 45 minutes, however if you dont feel like it the hotel also has a free bus that will do the trick.

there are good resturants in the area, and Forum Madeira ( a shopping centre) is at the top of the road.

Will be going back!!

Just back from 2 weeks at this hotel. No doubt 2 weeks unbroken sunshine helped but the hotel and facilities were very good with more than enough sun loungers to go around and the grounds were very well kept. The atmosphere expected of a place can be a bit subjective and it is probably not ideal for someone wanting a gregarious holiday experience as most guests seem to prefer keeping to themselves. There were a lot of different nationalities too which may also discourage people from mixing. The hotel is situated right on the promenade which gives pleasant walks to the Lido area one way and to restaurants and a supermarket the other. (There is a supermarket in the centre behind O Barqueiro and the other restaurants). It is no longer possible to use the tunnel at the foot of the steps through to the stony beach as it was seemingly damaged in the recent storm and is locked shut for the foreseeable future.
Restaurants tried in the vicinity are "Doca do Cavacas" down the steps. Food here was fish and good and can recommend the seafood stew(for 2) and the espada in onion sauce. It closes on Mondays so save yourself a walk down the steps that day!
At the top of the steps is "O Barqueiro" which is always popular, particularly with the locals, but is a bit pricier. Also check your bill - thay charged us 2.50 euros for bread we didn't have and 12 eouros for a 9 euro half bottle of wine. I had the estepada which didn't come on a skewer and the chunks of meat were tough as old boots and full of gristle. Never tried it again so can't say if it was typical but wouldn't recommend. There as also a pizzeria and another restaurant - mexican I think - there but didn't try them.
Found a great little restaurant one block along from the Forum centre - "Churrascaria Galinha Dourada". From the outside you would maybe walk past but give it a try. It serves the most tender beef I have had anywhere on the island and the same wine that cost 9 euros a half bottle in "O Barqueiro" was 8.50 euros for the whole bottle here. It doesn't have a vast menu but if you like beef, chicken or pork ribs you won't find better. It closes on a Monday too.
Tried "Il Basilico" at the Porto Mare hotel, it was OK but a bit pricey. Also tried the "Gran Munde" chinese at the top of the road up from the Lido which was a perfectly good chinese if you feel like a change from espada etc.
There are some great little snack bars in the Forum centre, top floor. One in particular does soup and quiche or a filled roll with drink for about 4 euros or mixed salad and drink for the same. Really good value.
I had misgivings about the Grand being so far out but there is plenty to do in the vicinity. Taxis from Funchal cost 7 - 8 euros and it is too far to walk realistically. The Lido is about the limit and a taxi from there is 3 -4 euros.

Stayed at the Pestana in Feb 08
We booked a suite from the hotel website and got a good deal, we were very impressed when we checked in, 2 large rooms and 2 balconies with fantastic sea views. The hotel is very modern and the facilities and the grounds are impressive. Breakfast has a good selection and the bar is pleasant at night if the entertainment a bit cruise ship.

I would say the hotel is a good 4 star and the employees need to improve on their customer service. At breakfast we had to chase coffee, cutlery and felt that they were slow to clean up. No smiles or welcoming manner. I can't comment on the hotel restaurants as we never ate there, the one night we went to try the Italian restaurant we were told they could take us in an hour altough there appeared to be plenty of free tables.

We were looking for a relaxing break and certainly the hotel was suitable for that, quiet and nice areas for sitting around during the few rain showers we had. The pool area was nice with good views. The walk to Funchal along the promenade was pleasant and we enjoyed our stay at the Pestana.

Two supermarkets near the hotel, one in the shopping centre up the hill, and one out the back gate and to the right, in the same building as O Barquerio. Buy your bottled water or wine from these.

Restaurants
Real Canoa – Mentioned by a lot of people on the site and I can confirm it all, great food, good atmosphere and excellent, friendly staff. From the first day Bruno was the perfect host, a brief chat to greet us, some info and a book on the island upon hearing it was our first visit, and then leaving us to enjoy the food and music. You've got to try the Steak on a Stone, a bit different and fabulously flavourful. All around great value we visited once for lunch and 3 times for dinner and were impressed every time. Would recommend to everyone. Up the hill from the hotel, the first restaurant on the opposite side of the road.

O Barquerio – As mentioned previously you get apetisers and bread so think of your main before you think to order a starter. We ordered paella for two and ate about 2/3rds of it. It was delicious and the shenanigans in the lobster tank provided entertainment while we waited for the main. Out the gate by the pool, turn right and its a couple of hundred yards on the right hand side.

Choupana Hills Restaurant– we went here for Valentines night dinner and though expensive, the food & service were true five star feel. Recommended for a romantic dinner, we felt the hotel would have been too isolated for us but definitely worth a visit for dinner. Need a taxi to get here, seriously up in the clouds.

Nice little wine/shop and bar just up the hill from Real Canoa, a lovely couple running it and very reasonable wines by the glass

We attended a promotional timeshare visit. First impression was Excuse me You cannot park here! as we were unloading our bags. My husband then put the car in the underground spacious carpark whilst I began the check in. This was prompt and clear. We were given room 1238 on the second floor.
Problem 1 - the lifts only work intermttently not too bad for us but not for those on the 6th floor
The appartment was big and well furnished with a lovely sea view.
Problem 2 - mouldy pack of pate in the back of the fridge - how long had it been there to go green? Also long brown hairs in the bath - so not sure of the cleaning.
Problem 3 - we were above the bar so no early nights with the thud of music. However the entertainment was ok if a bit 'old'
Problem 4 - the small kitchen area has an extractor that works automatically from early morning until 11pm (we were told this when we asked for it to be switched off)and told no because it would switch off the whole hotel, but it was nearer midnight before it stopped!
Problem 5 - the intermittent lifts come alive all through the night with a constant drone.
We complained but as we had only paid £99 plus flights we couldn't moan too much but we were glad to leave a day early to get some sleep.
Problem 6 - the indoor pool is like a kids paddling pool full of toys etc and far too small. And sharing the jacuzzi with a 2 year old in a rubber ring might be nice for some but not for us and this not in school holidays!
Problem 7 - Internet is rubbish worse than when we were in Cuba and you can't print off your return flight details. We had such a drama they waived the 3 euro charge!
The good things - lovely outdoor pool, gardens and communal areas but not enough sun umbrellas. Bar staff very helpful and attentive. Never used the restaurants so can't comment on food or service. But there are plenty very good restaurants within 5 mins walk all well priced.
So grand in name but certainly not 5*

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon, this was our second trip to the Grand and it is a lovely hotel. We stayed in a 1 bed apartment. Excellent accomodation, friendly staff. We ate in the hotel 2 nights out of 7 and the food was ok nothing spectacular. We were self-catering so chose to explore the restaurants of Funchal instead of the hotels. I would recommend it and will return there next time we visit Maderia.

Unfriendly staff. Terrible service. The only time a member of staff spoke to us was at breakfast when they asked "tea or coffee". No smile, no good morning. Small table for two and dishes not cleared between courses. We felt the hotel was run on a shoestring staff. Room service dishes remained in room all week. Only one complimentary cup of tea and coffee in room on arrival. sachets of tea milk and coffee were provded. after that you had to pay for more satchets. Same with bottled water. Rooms not cleaned till late afternoon. As far as the staff were concerned we might as well have been invisible.
Food quality was generally reasonably good yet it was expensive a three course meal for two people including a half bottle of wine was 119 euros not cheap.
Location of the hotel was good although you had a 5km walk into Funchal.
Overall the hotel is not 5 star at best 3/4 star
More staff and better service is certainly needed
