My wife and I found the Pestana Carlton to be First Rate.
We had booked half board in a room with a Mountain View. An upgrade to a Sea View was offered on arrival. As the sea view faced west south west, this would have given a sunny exposure to our balcony. However, as we didn't intend to spend time in our room, we felt the significant extra cost was not warranted.
Everything in the hotel met with or exceeded our already high expectation. Breakfast and dinner were buffet style to the highest standard, with an excellent and varied choice The room was well equipped and spotlessly clean. We liked and appreciated the well appointed facilities generally and the three swimming pools in particular. The staff were outstanding in their courtesy, friendliness and efficiency. The location of the hotel was ideal, away from the centre but only a short walk into Funchall, downhill going but uphill coming back.
Lunch and coffees in the hotel during the day we felt were expensive compared to outside. There was some low level music (?) - an incessant beat really - coming from a nearby establishment late on the Friday and Saturday nights, which a sea view room would have avoided. The matter is surely one for the authorities to address. Wi-fi was available free of charge, but only in the reception area.
The hotel wasn't full, the result of hard economic times and not the fault of the hotel. In fact the whole Island was a bit short of tourists and that is really sad. Portuguese and Brussels politicians have let their people down in a quite awful way.
We had a super holiday and have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Madeira and the Pestana Carlton in particular to future prospective guests.
