“First visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Our first visit to Madeira, went with Thomson. We stayed on the 18th floor, had mountain views. Thank god for lifts!!! Wonderful big bed at least 6 feet wide. The room was very clean and comfortable, the bed was turned down every evening. Lovely swimming pools, little chilly but immaculately clean. Nearly went in the sea but the water was a little rough. The hotel is in a good location, cruise ships in the harbour could be seen from the hotel. If you leave the hotel and turn left you can walk to the Lido, if you turn right you can walk to the harbour. Would recommend going on the cable car, visiting the Old Quarter, eating in the restaurants immediately outside the hotel. We took a trip to Porto Santo by ferry - 2 hours to get there, wonderful beach, very quiet and relaxing.

Room Tip: Mountain view rooms do not have sun on the balcony.

The Pestana Carlton Madeira has so much going for it, excellent staff, ideal location, beautiful swimming pools, nice bars and restaurant and breakfast almost too good. It is so near the ideal hotel but is currently let down by a couple of things that would seem easy to fix.

Firstly there is no smoking/non-smoking allocation of rooms. As a result we found our room constantly filling with smoke from our neighbours as they smoked on their balcony. We tried shutting the veranda doors and switching the aircon up to full. It made a lot of noise but had little effect on either temperature or smoke. This was even less funny when we were awoken by the smoke from their 4am cigarette.

Secondly the gym really lets the otherwise superb facilities down. While the age of the average guest is admittedly high, the equipment is a joke even for someone of middle years. The one upright cycle machine was broken throughout out visit, another "chopper style" cycle machine provided little benefit for anyone under 70. The one ergo/rowing machine was so old that the rubber grips round the hand bar had gone altogether leaving only the underlying thin bar. The chain and cog so worn that as soon as one put any half serious effort in the chain slipped numerous times each stroke making any significant exercise impossible. There is no cross trainer but there is a treadmill though I was unable to test it due to a calf injury. While I do not generally do weights in desperation for some exercise I tried, only to find that they were of a size strictly for the 70+ and not too healthy market.

Unlike all other gyms I have been in there were no paper towels or spray bottles to wipe down the machines so you got hands etc on whatever your predecessors had left. The gym is situated in a room with no windows and we could not detect any effect from aircon. Bizarrely the room next door was empty but for 4 unused sun loungers and had windows for ventilation and views of the garden. I did not see anyone in it throughout our stay.

I spoke to the manager about this (after numerous attempts at other levels completely failed) and she was very professional and most charming. We were later told that the rowing machine had been fixed by the customer relations rep but it remained no different. We suggested that smokers and non smokers be allocated rooms in different areas (which would cost nothing) to the same person who stated that they did not do this as it was illegal to smoke in all hotel rooms and people only smoked on their balconies. She seemed completely careless when we informed her of smoke from neighbouring balconies entering rooms.

This hotel is so strong in other areas I am surprised at the above. The manager intonated budget constraints but as free bubbly is served at breakfast, if budgets are so tight surely by spending the money currently used to provide free alcohol at breakfast alone the gym facilities could be made good or at least average (our work gym at home is so basic we jokingly call it the "grim gym" but it still has 2 working ergo rowing machines, 4 working treadmills, cross trainers and upright bicycles all well maintained and numerous weights & other equipment). After working up a good appetite and thirst I am sure that fit clients would spend more in the hotel restaurant and bars than those that take advantage of the free breakfast bubbly. Moreover more slightly younger and fit clients would no doubt bring more ladies such as my partner who greatly enjoyed splashing out on massages, facials, body exfoliations and paying for your fine wines while leaving the breakfast bubby to those who started earlier. Similarly I would rather pay for all drinks in the evening and did not partake of the breakfast alcohol.

I suspect by merely separating smoking and non-smoking rooms at zero cost and bringing the gym up to an even average standard this hotel will greatly increase occupancy and revenue with or without free alcohol at breakfast. I also believe that you would make far more from the pool table if it was not 10 Euro to play it (we did not see anyone use it).
Our many thanks to all your wonderful staff and many thanks for all the hard work in maintaining everything else to such a high standard and hope the above is useful.

Yet another visit served to reinforce our opinion of this hotel - the staff are most welcoming and we always wonder how they manage to remember guests so well when they see so many visitors ! One point worth noting for new guests is that the superb La taverna restaurant is now open for an extra day in addition to the week ends - we have no hesitation in recommending booking a table for dinner - you will be looked after with great style and professionalism by Fernando - a master of his craft

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade to a junior suite - these are very comfortable and given the large balconies are...

We stayed at the Carlton from 25th October to 1st November 2013. We had a sea view junior suite.
The room was a very good size with a double balcony equipped with chair, table & sun lounger. The balcony was sunny all day. The huge bathroom had a massive deep bath & big shower cabin with 2 shower heads. We bought our own tea, milk etc from the Spar opposite & kept it in the fridge.

We stayed half board. The breakfast offered a good choice, but we were disappointed with the dinner buffet. The salad bar & desserts was nearly the same every night & the main courses were very unimaginative. The only buffet that was different was the Madeira Buffet which served up some traditional Madeira dishes that were very nice, but again the same desserts. The service was very good, but the food was not the quality of a 5 star hotel.

We swapped our dinner for a lunch at the Poolside bar on one day. The food was good, but the service was very slow - we had to wait half an hour for a salad & a sandwich.

I would stay at this hotel again. The staff were all very helpful (especially Judite & Lisbeth), and it was an excellent location, but I would not stay half board - there are enough restaurants very local to the hotel. Also be wary of people trying to get you to buy into their vacation club.

Room Tip: Request a sea view room. We had a cd player in our room, so maybe take a couple of cd's if you...

I traveled with my mom and grandma to Madeira so we needed something for us all.

We booked the standard room to sleep 3 of us and I couldn't of been more shocked to have so much space in the room. The bed was queen size for me and mom and for my nan there was a bed set up which was fine. The. Bathroom had lovely heated floors and we was shocked to get towels every single day, even when wasn't needed. The maid would come am and again pm to ' turn the beds' and was very friendly. Room service was also fast. Only thing was we was facing the mountain and found the road noisey , if we was higher maybe would be quieter.

The public areas were always clean and staff friendly
Breakfast was of a good standard with lots of choice. We wasnt half board and didn't eat in hotels other restaurants I.e the grill but the menu looked good. We did have one afternoon lunch in the pub bar and the food was perfect and not too expensive. We ate out at many places and never had a bad meal. So much choice and very good prices.
The restaurants we ate ate were , the chalet which does 3 courses tourist menu for 16 euro with a drink and coffee , fab!.
In the old town we ate at Otapasol , such great staff and food fab
We went the lido to the Chinese, once again beautifully cooked dishes
The red lion was ownd by Scottish couple , the food was also very very nice.

I recommend the cable cars, even tho it's abit hairy and to go to the monte at the top and tropical and botanical gardens at top. The cheapest place to get tickets is from the cable car ticket office, not anyone off streets, ignore them. And always make sure taxi metre is on, it's against the law for them to turn it off .

The facilities in hotel were fab, gym spa and indoor pool were made to good use by myself. We new hotel charged for extra tea and coffe so we brought our own milk from spa and took our own tea and coffee as u get fridge and kettle. The location was perfect! Rite in the middle of Funchal centre and lido .
Only fault is the lack of entertainment in hotel on evening , never many people there but suppose it's because of so many places to go.

David Thomson rep was helpful and friendly

On a whole, if ur thinking of booking, you won't be let down I. My opinion , we went last week October, 4 days of rain and cloud 3 days of sun which u got to expect that time of year

Room Tip: High floor if mountain side, or of possible sea view side so no noise from road

We have just returned from a week at the Pestana Carlton and were very impressed with the hotel and particularly the service. We were on holiday with my mother in law and her friend, both of whom are in their 80s and not very mobile. Lizbeth Alburquerque, the Guest Relation Manager was particularly helpful. In fact, all of the staff from Joanna, the manager, to the ladies who cleaned our rooms were extremely friendly and helpful. This, in addition to our lovely sea view rooms made our holiday very enjoyable.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms on a high floor (we were on floor 15) are worth the extra cost. Ours was sunny all da...
