This hotel is extremely well placed for access to all the areas of Funchal. The central area being only a 10 -15 minute stroll , the old town area about 30 minutes. We didn't visit the lido area. There are numerous places to eat at around the hotel . We stayed at this hotel on a bed and breakfast basis and the only two things i had a problem with were the bed and the breakfast .
The breakfast was far from as brilliant as I have read in many reviews , it was lukewarm not hot , the toaster didn't toast the bread (if you put it through a second time it burnt and when items ran out there was a fair wait for them to be replaced (but at least it was hot).
The bed was too soft if my wife sneezed in bed the ripples across the bed nearly threw me onto the floor , the bed gave no support and some mornings I ended up waking with backache.
The room was spacious and well equipped with a free safe and ample storage , the décor was a bit tatty one of the lampshades was quite stained with what I don't know(not quite 5 star),and the walls a bit grubby.
The sea view was good (a side sea view which Thomson now class as sea view and charge accordingly). The aircon was noisy and struggled a bit to cool the room. The bathroom was clean but it's a bit spooky that the sound from the TV is piped into the bathroom.
The inside of the hotel is clean and staff very helpful and most are polite one or two grumpies but that's life .A little bit of a niggle here, we went a look round after check-in when we went to our room discovered that our bags had been sent to the wrong room.
The pool areas are brilliant we spent our time on the Atlantic level terrace plenty of space and a nice sea breeze to cool off (The weather was roasting hot.).There was good access to the ocean via steps or a ladder. Some people appeared to have to pay for their parasols, we didn't I think because we were hotel guests and not time share or beach club.
The drinks in the hotel are very expensive but there are plenty of places within 100 yards that you can drink in. If you want a night cap on your balcony there is a spar mini market just across the road were you can buy just about anything.
Overall this hotel I think just slips under 5 star, but ,only just. As I have stated it's location is superb and the pool areas brilliant. Because of that we would probably return, in a few years when all the alterations on the sea front are complete.
