“No heart and no wifi”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2012

A walking vacation on Madeira combined with good Portugese cooking was on our minds. We booked a suite in the Regencu Cliff and hoped for the best. Well, we were disappointed.

The suite 204 has a balcony but no sunshine at all.

The internal pool is small and cold - the external pool is even smaller and much colder (I am from the Netherlands and used to cold water, but this was even for me too cold)

The wifi does not work in your room - only in the lobby

The breakfast is under par and even on an island with so much fruit not a banana is to be found, let alone other fresh fruit. Everything comes from a can or a package, even the eggs.

Personnel are distant and not helpful - on the hotel parking the places are blocked with a chain for the manager - not for the hotel guest (and if you park there your car is chained as well..)

We had dinner once since we were too tired to go out again. Huge mistake, so we found nice fresh food in the neighborhood.

So all in all, look elsewhere if you decide for Funchal; there are better places to be found with more personality and soul than this one.

Room Tip: Avoid 204 - no sunshine at all

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comment which had our best attention. It is always with great regret that we acknowledge that we were not able to fulfill our guest expectations.

Regarding you review we would like to clarify our readers:

Suite 204 is located in one of the best parts of the hotel with front sea view. As it located in the west part it is sunnier in the afternoon than in the morning.
The water of the swimming pools is around 22ºC.
Our breakfast, as a standard, has everyday fresh fruit salad, plus a display of fresh sliced fruit (which includes everyday 3 different types of fruit). In addition to the fresh fruit, we have every day caramelized fruit, which includes banana twice per week. Certainly our eggs do not come from a package or a can.
We have 14 parking place available for our guests. As a small hotel we find that the parking places are enough but of course subject to availability, on the other hand free of charge.
We apologize for not fulfilling your expectations, we do our best but we know that unfortunately, it is not possible to please all our guests, although it is always our aim.

Best Regards
Iolanda Fernandes

Brilliant staff, clean, quiet, small and friendly. This time we were celebrating our 20th anniversary and everyone went out of their way to make it a special day. The number of visits we have made to this hotel shows that we would recommend it.

What a delightful, hospitable haven this is. Maybe it's the size (only 50-odd rooms), or that the staff genuinely are caring, but they all seem to know everyone by name, remember guests' preferences and perform their duties with an easy enthusiasm and efficiency not to be found in larger establishments. In fact service with a smile and willingness to help are the norm from all, be they Reception, Restaurant or Room staff.
Comfortable beds, balcony, great views, pleasant decor, adequate space, fridge, good sized TV etc, come as standard with every room, while the (uncrowded) guest facilities include indoor and outside pools, a gym, Turkish Bath and a beautifully aspected outside lounging area. Although I am not exactly built to take advantage of any but the latter, all look most inviting and are meticulously maintained.
Catering for the widely varying tastes of a discerning multi-national guest list, the hotel's light and spacious but not too big restaurant is to be applauded for its eclectic menus, with alternative offerings to suit all but the most pernickety.
Well placed for buses, shops, or simply exploring, this is a super little refuge for anyone seeking a grown-up break, removed from, yet tolerably within reach of the island's fascinating capital, Funchal.

I tagged along with a friend who had already booked herself a holiday with Saga, and I must say that she choose a brilliant hotel in a perfect location. Saga had already sold out of their holidays so to be able to join my friend I searched the internet and managed to find the same flight and also book the Regency Cliff. My room was better then I ever thought it could be and the view towards Funchal was stunning.
We wanted to visit gardens around the area. After the buffet breakfast we would catch a local bus or the complimentary transport into Funchal, and then take local buses up to the garden of our choice. We bought a ticket on our first bus into Funchal, and then having worked out how many trips we would need for the week were able to load the card at a discount price at one of the kiosks by the harbour. A very efficient and reasonable way of travel. The free use of the internet made it simple to work out where to go and how to get there - but only after a member of staff showed me where the @ sign was on the keyboard. The staff are very helpful.
After wonderful days garden viewing we would return to the hotel, where I would have a swim and a sunbathe and my friend read and relaxed on her balcony in the sun. We heard about the happy hour on offer but we never made it to one!
We had booked half board so ate at the hotel everynight. I preferred the three buffet evenings to the table service meals. I hope to visit again and would choose to stay B & B and buy one of the special offers of a few nightly meals during the week. After dinner we would sit in the lounge, and being a small hotel it was easy to start a chat with someone familiar from the airport taxi, hotel bus, restaurant or pool. Entertainment was provided on a few of the evenings and we thought that was enough.
All I can say is that the holiday was perfect, and the hotel was a big part of that.

Room Tip: My friend and I were both on the fourth floor. Reception and the restaurant are at street level on...

Another thoroughly enjoyable two weeks with Madeira Regency Cliff, where, thank goodness, hotel, management and staff remain exactly as last year. Friendly, cheerful and tirelessly willing, they are without exception and in every respect a credit to their beautiful island, their profession and themselves. Overlooking open sea and eastwards towards Funchal harbour, our spacious room was, again, well appointed, comfortable, relaxing and at all times spotlessly clean. Buffet breakfast caters for just about every taste, with plenty to go round. Main restaurant meals alternate between hot buffet and full table service and offer a variety of local and international dishes, always well presented and agreeable to most palates. We fully enjoyed all food and drinks taken 'in house'. Hotel pools and leisure facilities provide both for peaceful relaxation and those more strenuous appetite building diversions, all areas being attractive and well maintained. Although a daily hospitality bus is available to and from Funchal, the easy 40-45 minute stroll into town makes for a far more healthy and interesting option - and the prospect of an adjournment to one of the city's myriad pavement bars all the more rewarding.

For daytime coffee, drinks and snacks try the Teatro theatre bar on Avenida Arriaga, the cafe atop the main market building or there's a little spot at the top of the old town overlooking the ocean and looking back toward the harbour which we particularly enjoyed. For a hugely warm welcome, good food and relaxing ambience no more than 5 minutes walk from the hotel, don't miss Bruno's 'Real Canoa' restaurant (www.myspace.com/realcanoa) on Rua Ponta da Cruz.

Alongside some of its neighbours, Regency Cliff may appear almost bijou. It is, nonetheless, scrupulously managed and presents in a way that will delight anyone looking for a quiet, informal, friendly and solicitous break. We'll be back.

Previous reviews have said it all, and on that basis we choose this hotel above others. We were not dissapointed as the Regency Cliff certailnly lived up to its high reputation. I upgraded the room before travelling to ensure a full sea view and was delighted to find ourselves in an immaculate suite (304 for reference) which comprised an entance hall with a small kitchenette (didnt do any cooking though), a lounge/dining room with a widescreen TV and sliding glass door access to the balcony, a huge bathroom with his & her washbasins, and a large bedroom with another widescreen TV and sliding glass door access to the balcony.
The location is perfect and quiet, just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of the centre.... 5 minutes on the buses that run past the hotel (01 or 02). You can get a 1 day or multi day pass for the local bus services from many places including the hotel reception and taxis are reasonable and plentifull as well.
The food in the hotel was good, the buffets were varied and plentifull and when the restaurant operated as full waiter service the food standard was very high. We ate in the hotel several times as well as sampling some of the local restaurants of which there are many within a short walk.
From the front of the hotel there is a footpath that follows the coast westwards to a small fishing villiage, its about a 4km pleasant walk each way.
Finally I could not speak too highly of the staff, without exception they were highly efficent and always helpfull... with a friendly smile. They are a credit to the hotel and the managment.
In summary I would recommend The Regency Cliff without any hesitation whatsover. Thanks you for a wonderfully relaxing break,

If you prefer the anoninimity of a huge factory type hotel, this is not for you. It is beautifully clean, well furnished and so comfortable. Staff are almost exactly the same as last year which speaks for itself. Food cannot be bettered. Easy access to Funchal and other parts of the Island. Plenty of help with advice re travel by bus to places of interest. No organised trips which is exactly what the hotel advises itself on i.e. for the individual travellor. Can really recommend the Madeiran Folk evening. Great fun. We will return next year for our third visit. It will be like returning to old friends.

Room Tip: All rooms are good and all have sea views.
