“Elegant luxury!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

I did a lot of research before choosing this hotel: we wanted something more traditional, and away from the main tourist zone of the Lido. And we were delighted! The building itself is palatial, with a large lounge area filled with comfortable arm chairs and squishy sofas and free wifi access, where one could happily sit all day if the weather was as it was on our trip! All the staff were delightful, and happy to help in any way to make our stay enjoyable.
We found that our room, although classed as a standard, was luxurious: it's always lovely to have additional extras such as bath robes and slippers, and there was a balcony looking over the garden, and up the mountain to Monte. I didn't find the pillow very comfortable, but that's not a major issue! The spa area was beautiful, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and the pools were heated. We love swimming, and the photos of the pools was one of the reasons I selected this hotel - although they weren't as big as I had hoped, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We appreciated the various seating areas in the grounds of the hotel, on the several terraces.
Breakfast was generous: plenty of cereals, fruits, salad, cheeses, ham, pate, fresh rolls, croissants, muffins...together with a selection of hot food every day - and a delicious range of egg dishes cooked to order. The dining room staff were absolutely charming, and nothing was too much trouble.
We didn't have dinner at the hotel, mainly due to the fact that we were on a rather tight budget and the restaurant there is - for us - expensive. But lots of guests ate there every night, and it sounds as if the food was wonderful! The price of drinks and bar snacks was - again, for us - rather pricey. Two coffees/teas was 6 euros, and one evening we had two drinks of madeira wine and tonic water, which was 12 euros. But it is a luxury hotel, so I suppose that is to be expected!
The location is out of the town centre, and there didn't seem to be any local bars/restaurants/grocery shops. On the first morning, we walked down - about 25 mins - which was fine, but the road is quite busy, so the walk isn't that enjoyable. There is a shuttle bus that runs at set times, and which (even though the hotel seemed to be quite quiet) gets booked up quickly. If you don't mind being constrained by a timetable, it's a good service - otherwise, there are local buses that run from nearby. We hired a car, and there is plenty of free parking at the hotel.
As we had an evening flight home, we were given a late check out which was really appreciated.
We'd definitely stay there again: for a relaxing, chilled holiday on a beautiful island, I'd recommend this hotel.

We had a wonderful time at this hotel, it was quiet following the New Year which suited us well. Tremendous breakfasts with views across the hills and harbour. Very attentive staff and room made up promptly every day. The courtesy bus is very good, we often used it one way and taxi back. If walking to town turn right out of the hotel drive and then first right, there are pavements all the way ( good advice from the courtesy bus driver) dont risk the sightly shorter "no pavement route". Fabulous pool heated to 27C we used it every day as well as turkish bath or sauna. We will return

Room Tip: There are good views from most parts of the hotel

This hotel is probably truly a four star, but the service was excellent and the food matched it.
The hotel is only within walking distance of the main town if you like walking on narrow roads without pavements, so dont bother.
The taxi costs 7 Euros into town. There is a shuttle service, but we never used it, times never matched when we wanted to go. Anyway, the Island is the experience, so for your sake, rent a car.
This cost and inconveinience is worth it, when you see the view.
The bathroom suites may require a little updating, but you cant fault the accommodation.
We are fussy travellers and I recommend this hotel, for what it's worth.

Room Tip: 400 - 415, or those rooms facing east, on the fourth floor.

We have just spent a wonderfull Christmas at this beautiful hotel, the service and friendliness of all the staff was was exceptional. we had a room with a panoramic view which was well worth the extra cost. We booked bed and breakfast because we like to try the local restaurants, but the hotel did a special deal that allowed you to book dinner for 3,4 or 5 nights at a reduced rate, we chose the 3 night option which was good value compared to the top quality restaurants we dined at, on the other nights. Our only negative, on the food side, was that the we thought the Christmas Eve gala dinner was far to expensive at 150 euros per person, although we were offered a discount.
The walk to the town was a good 20 minutes down a steep hill, used taxi's on most days.
We usually spend Christmas in Cyprus (10 times), but for Christmas lights and atmosphere, you could not get anything better than Funchal. We will return next year.

Room Tip: Choose a room with panoramic view.

We just spent our second Christmas at this delightful hotel and were so happy to be back in the quiet, tasteful ambience again and had a great welcome back from the friendly staff and the general manager.
Our room (306) had a view over the sea and part of the garden - and a small terrace - and caught the morning sun, so great for reading or a coffee.
The food is excellent and the chef (Carlos Magnus) excelled himself on Christmas Eve with a splendid gala dinner and magnificent wines.
I spent a lot at the outdoor pool as the weather was brilliantly sunny this year and swam in lovely warm water of 27 degrees. It was really relaxing and just what we needed and the staff were great.
There is a 20 minute walk to the centre but also a hotel shuttle bus that goes several times a day.
We can't wait to go back again.

Room Tip: We liked our room 306 but there is some noise outside from air conditioner unit at the side of the r...

We loved the old fashioned charm of this place and really enjoyed our weeks stay here on what used to be a grand old estate. The hillside location is stunning and the view over the bay and town of Funchal town and its sweeping mountains enjoyed from our balcony was wonderful. Our first view when we arrived in the early evening with all the sparkling lights was magical and I loved the way the weather changed the view constantly, the top of the mountain often shrouded in fog. Breakfast is served on the terrace and the sunrise was worth getting up for too. The room was spacious, with a comfortable king sized bed and large well appointed bathroom. I appreciated the complimentary bottle of madeira and enjoyed learning about and sampling this individual fortified wine in its various forms.
The spa treatments were wonderful. The hotel has a goodsized indoor heated pool and a small unheated outdoor pool which was great to dip in as we enjoyed temperatures of 28 degrees plus every day. The sunbathing area has nice views and never felt crowded. You can get drinks and bar snacks. Sometimes there was waiter service by the pool but my main complaint about the place was that the barstaff were often unavailable and room service quite often did not answer the phone. This was perhaps because we were not staying there in high season and they had cut staff but it felt like they were a man down all the time and in this level of hotel that sort of thing rankles. The staff were generally friendly and helpful but overall, with a couple of exceptions, I found them a little lacking in warmth again in comparison to the level of service I usually experience in this class of hotel.
The food was pretty good and I liked that they featured only Portuguese wine on their list. They have a dine around programme and we tried the Quinta da Monte which I did not rate and the Quinta do Estreito which was lovely both for the food and the views of Camara dos Lobos. A free shuttle bus, which you need to book in order to avoid disappointment, is provided to these other hotels, as well as into town although taxis are pretty reasonable in Funchal.
So with the exception of some slow and not always smiling service we felt the hotel lived up to its billing in the Charming Hotel group and would certainly think about going back.

Room Tip: the panoramic view is worth the extra charge room charge

I really enjoyed it here, its a very beautiful hotel, romantic and charming place overlooking Funchal. Our room was excellent, the food was great and I also really enjoyed the one day at the spa. Very lovely place and for sure we will come back again.
