“Good hotel, awful service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

My wife and I were on our ten years wedding anniversary trip and chose this hotel because of the reviews. Many aspects of the hotel were indeed enjoyable: breakfast is excellent, the pools are pleasant with great view, the room was clean for the whole week, and there's free parking.
Unfortunately, we were very disappointed by the service however.
To begin with, I approached the hotel beforehand by email with some questions that would have been useful as regards celebrating our wedding day. I never got any reply. The emails reached the hotel, however, because when we arrived, the person in the reception said to me that they are going to arrange a surprise for us to our hotel room at our wedding day. Yet, they never arranged anything. Now I'm not expecting a hotel (even a five star hotel) to pay attention to my wedding day but I find it dissatisfying that they say they would arrange something and then do not do it.
Then we made the mistake of reserving a nice table with a view over Funchal from the hotel restaurant for our celebratory dinner. I won't repeat all the mistakes but only three (!) of them: First, the table we asked was not available and the restaurant had decided to solve this situation by not reserving any table for us. Thus we ended having a table in the middle of the room; lessening all the romantic vibes of this celebratory dinner.
Second, my wife's stomach cannot handle onion. She told about this to the waiter, and he said that there was no onion in her main course and that he also tells about this restriction to the kitchen. Nevertheless, all the clams and their sauce was rich in onion. As a result, she left most of the main course (27e...) untouched. When we mentioned this to the waiter, we didn't get any apology just a comment "ouh, I'll tell that to the kitchen".
Third, when we get the bill (which we had not asked at that moment yet), it didn't include the desserts. I had not noticed this, and the waiter only noticed this after I had signed it. At that moment he said that he'll bring us the new bill. We finished our drinks and waited the new bill. And waited. And waited. At the end they made us wait the bill (in now empty restaurant) for ten minutes because they didn't bring the right bill in the first time.
The lesson of our visit: the hotel is nice but the service can be very poor (even for two star hotel, not to mention five star hotel). It is fine if you do not want anything special. Then again, if you want to be certain that things work, choose some other hotel. The final case on this point: at check-out I left my email address to the manager with a note that if they would like to know why I was disappointed about the hotel, they could contact me. They haven't.

The hotel is situated on the top of a hill overlooking Funchal with great views of the city, harbour and the ocean. The pool area and the terrace gardens around the hotel were very nice, giving the hotel a unique atmosphere and providing fabulous ocean views. The staff people were friendly and helpful. Hotel was clean and comfortable. Breakfasts on the hotel terrace were just amazing and one of the highlights of our stay.

This is a great hotel and very cleverly designed. We had a full week there and really enjoyed it. The food is of a high standard. The location of the hotel is one of its many strengths - it overlooks Funchal harbour and has wonderful views across the bay and is in a quiet part of the city. The restaurant leads out onto a wonderful terrace which is a great place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and dinner while taking in the panoramic views. There are two pools and a garden which is worth exploring. One of our party is disabled and the hotel has very good faclities for disbaled guests - ramps everywhere and good access around the building. The staff were very helfpful as well. Overall superb!

Spent a wonderful weekend. Ideal place for a romantic getaway...far from the center (downtown) confusion, quiet, very clean and a well equiped facilities.
Nice gardens, with hidden corners -well suited for Romantic times, good enough pool and enjoyable food.
Two minus signs thought. First, althought the most part of clients are foreigners, employees must understand that some of us un derstand the language and get aware of mosunderstandings between them which does not favour the atmosphere! More than once, we were presented with less appropriate scenes with employees arguing among themselves. Second, all considered, price quality can be improved. It is not cheap and one expects his money worth!!!!
Last but not least, dare the chef! He is something else...enjoyed the food.

Room Tip: Althought I did get to see all rooms, it is foresseable that the quality is there in all of them. Th...

This is a wonderful small hotel in Funchal . There are only 63 rooms and most rooms have a large balcony with magnificent views of the countryside, ocean, etc. the rooms are spacious the bathrooms very large with separated toilet and shower facilities. They provided a complimentary bottle of Maderia wine on check. The pool and spa area are very nice, my only complaint would be the fitness room, it is practically non existent. It is sparsely equipped with old equipment . The breakfast is wonderful with breathtaking views of the harbour area. The hotel is not close to the downtown area but they do provide free shuttle service when required. The surrounding grounds are very well maintained with glorious flowers and shrubbery and even two swans. The staff are very courteous and willing to help, language was never an issue

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms so don't worry.

In 2009 we chose this hotel hoping it would be quiet and comfortable. It fully met those expectations but perhaps what most persuaded us to come back in April 2012 was the friendly and helpful staff. We also particularly enjoyed the excellent cuisine and the fact that the public areas of the hotel are spacious and comfortable.

The hotel is located in a quiet residential area with gardens and wonderful views over Funchal bay. For us this was a big plus, and breakfast on the terrace was a particular delight. The trade-off is that it is a five minute taxi ride into Funchal (but taxis come promptly and only cost EUR 7) Or the walk into town takes about 15-20 minutes (in which case it is worth finding the little side-roads and footpaths, as walking on the main road is not comfortable).

Room Tip: The panoramic rooms do have wonderful views and get most of morning and early afternoon sun. But th...

Our room, which was a basic double with a balcony and view over the garden, was very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious with lovely large bath towels. Bath robes and slippers were also provided.

The reception areas are attractive and a pleasure to be in. There is free wifi and we were delighted to find a laptop available for the guests to use. Breakfast was good (coffee very good, tea a little weak for English tastes) and meals in the restaurant were excellent. On most nights there was a three course menu available at 35 euros, or a four course at 45 euros, as well as a good selection A La Carte. One evening there was a special Tasting Menu which we thoroughly enjoyed, with a very good performance of Fado during the meal.

The free shuttle bus to Funchal was very convenient, but taxis are also very reasonable (between five and seven euros.) We also took advantage of the free bus to take us to dinner at one of their sister hotels.

There is a delightful pool and no shortage of sun loungers.

The staff are very approachable and helpful. We had a late flight, and as our room was not going to be taken, we were able to stay there a few extra hours. This was really welcome.

Our only negative comments are that the wardrobe hanging space is very small. The maximum sound on the television was very low. Perhaps this is deliberate to maintain the quiet and peaceful atmosphere, who knows? Just two small points which aren't important compared to all the positives.
