“Luxury on all sides”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

We stayed at the Royal Savoy in Funchal in March of this year and it was probably our tenth visit to the hotel. Things have changed since the Classic Savoy was knocked down, but the quality of the service remains the same. However, because we were accustomed to using the facilities of both hotels, the overall atmosphere is not quite what it was. It is still luxury, but not quite ultimate luxury.

Room Tip: Higher floors have a better view out to sea and slightly more sunshine.

Lovely hotel. Staff friendly.
The room was very nice and all you wanted apart from no coffee, tea, milk or sugar which is usually the normal thing for a hotel. Even B&B's have all these items.
Over rated for what you pay.
The swimming pool towels did not seem to have been washed correctly with soap powder and hot water.
The bed sheets looked like they hadn't been washed correctly.
Brilliant location and lovely views overlooking the ocean and pool areas.
The biggest letdown was coming into the hotel in the evening and finding alot of people on the corridor with the police with them. It was the next morning one holiday maker informed us that 9 rooms had their 'safes' removed and items stolen. Not a very good sign!!

We had not been to the Royal Savoy for 3 years as we had decided to use exchange options, so it was nice to return. The staff as usual were very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. I had made a mistake with our flights and booked them a week earlier than I should have (I really must learn to read a calendar). I contacted the Royal Savoy and their staff were very understanding and changed our accommodation accordingly though we did not get our own apartment. The apartment itself was a standard studio apartment the same as our own but had a bit of a tired feel to it. Perhaps it is getting to refurbishment time.
In house entertainment was MUCH better this year except for the Ballroom Dancing show. That was very poor. The dancers were intermediate standard at best with very poor technique. I am a dancer myself and we have medallists in our childrens' classes who could have put on a better display than this.
A refurb and a better dancing display would, in my eyes, return the Royal Savoy to where it deserves to be, i.e. an Excellent 5 star resort.

Surely there's mora 5 star hotel than a telephone in the bathroom and chocolates on the pillow!. The standard of service seems to reflect the requirements of regular returning time share clientele. Our first offered 'Ocean View' suite was on the ground 9 ie swimming pool) level, the view was only of a large palm tree. Staff were most reluctant to provide us with the standard of room which we required and had paid for. First we were told that nothing else was available, and we had booked for weeks. Evenually an 'ocean view' room was found but without any apology or courtesy. On the first morning the lift in which we were travelling in suddenly stopped and all the lights went out. I pressed everywhere in the hope of finding an emergency button. Eventually the lights and the alarm came on and the doors opened. The cleaning staff in the corridor laughed and dismissed our concern, suggesting that this was not an uncommon occurence. We explored and discoved that the oranges nestlin g at the bottom of our complimentary fruit bowl we white with mold. Some compliment! What else, well the staff found great difficulty in proceesing my debit card, three attempts at banging the machine and then a desperate plea 'Have you another card?' Knowing my card was fine, i refused and eventually after 20 minutes they got their machine to operate.
The town itself is interesting should you be a civil engineer, following floods the whole sea front and many of the roads were Major building sites.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

Stayed at The Royal Savoy four weeks ago as a hotel guest in what seems a predominantly timeshare property. The timeshare suites seemed to be a better standard of the hotel rooms which at best would be described as four star. The hotels check in area is quite small, more akin to an apartment block and the staff less knowledgeable of any five star hotel I have been in. The daily newspaper ordered stopped after the first day and again had to be re-ordered receiving the same look up to the sky from the reception staff. Indeed, most requests for information were met with dumb looks and a search for someone who knew an answer. The Tour Operator guides were to be found, after a search, seven floors below reception on a table in a corridor, not at reception or even in the library. The hotel room itself was dated with a flat screen TV occupying the very large cabinet that had at sometime held a large older television. The door on the fridge would not close properly due to a bracket hanging off, the front of a drawer fell off and had to be hammered back on with a shoe, the soap/shampoo in the bathroom was of the wall dispenser type and the single block of soap at the bidet was used every day but never replaced in 7 days. The room, on arrival, had a kettle, tea bags and coffee sachets the latter two of which were never replaced for the whole week without a daily request. Most of the guests were mature which was surprising when the hotel is situated on a hill affectionately nicknamed by one guest as "heart attack hill", indeed it was the only road I have come across with handrails on the pavement. Breakfast was a quiet affair, most of the guests seemingly time sharers who did not appear and breakfast was never "ready" at the appointed starting time either the outside tables were not set or the lady who cooked the eggs had not appeared or both. The poolside snack bar was limited and expensive for what it was, with the external restaurants a better option. Evening entertainment was quiet and adequate for the clientele. The hotel is clean but somewhat dated and to describe it as "a five star hotel" is stretching it somewhat, perhaps the timeshares are this standard but the hotel overall is a fairly good four star hotel with service that often dipped to a three star or less level. Overall experience was disappointing. As a footnote, I spent some time in my career as a mystery guest for five star hotels and would be happy to be challenged by the hotel. At present Funchal harbour is a building site undergoing reconstruction which will not be completed until 2014 and most of the restaurants in the town itself are average.

We have stayed in Royal Savoy Funchal for two weeks now, and it is a real pleasure to be a guest. The good service in every level does the stay so good. The friendly and helpful staff in every level make us feel very welcome.
We choosed some days to make our meals in the room, and some days we used our meal voychers in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. The meals have very good options for every taste. So this hotel is certainly a hotel to come back to next year.
