“A superb hotel in a lovely island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Savoy Hotel during the Madeira’s Flower Festival of this year (2013). The hotel is indeed superb. From what we saw in our stay we may say that the hotel deserves all and each one of its 5 stars. It excels in all the aspects that we can remember of, but let us highlight two of them: a splendid bedroom, with a pleasant view to the sea, and the professional, diligent and courteous staff and personnel, always willing to make your stay even better. In our sojourn we have seen as hotel guests predominantly mature couples. However, in the pools site we noticed the existence of a children’s playground and therefore we are convinced that, most probably in Summer, the hotel is prepared to have (and will have) young couples as its guests. Adding to all we have mentioned, Funchal, as well as all the Madeira island, is a beautiful and lovely place, offering a lot of tourist attractions and having an excellent roads network. Needless to say, we really have enjoyed our stay at the hotel. So, if you can do it… just go for it! It’s definitely worthwhile.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view to the sea.

You cannot fault the location of this wonderful hotel. Close to Funchal town centre (walking distance along the coast line) with botanical gardens nearby. Ideal place to rest and energise before embarking on various activities,e.g. walking, shopping, water sports, sightseeing and driving around the island. Plenty of restaurants nearby to suit all. Staff are very friendly and helpful; evening entertainment is great. Ideal for family and couples alike or even if you're single.Amenities are more than adequate.Parking facilities are excellent if you're thinking of hiring a car and l recommend this as the island is very hilly.
All in all a brilliant hotel.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on top floor as the views are amazing.

Stayed in a beautiful timeshare apartment. Bedroom, sitting room, kitchenette and two bathrooms (one each). nothing was too much trouble for the lovely staff. Maid service left us chocolates every day. Grounds are lovely. Roll on next year when we shall go again!

We have just returned from the Royal Savoy Hotel in Funchal and would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants luxury, opulence, beautiful furniture and much more. We went there through timeshare and had what was called a studio. This was nothing like we imagined. We had full bathroom, bedroom area with a massive bed, lounge/kitchen area with microwave/grill, 2 hobs, sink, fridge and dishwasher. This then led to a terrace with table and chairs and a gate to a lovely grassed area with palm trees. We made our own breakfast and lunch and went out in the evening for a meal as they were very pricey in the hotel as where the drinks. We had entertainment every evening which was good and the staff were very polite, helpful and efficient. We would certainly return to this hotel when we go to Madeira next time. The spa pool was good which we used, but the outdoor heated pool was brilliant.

Room Tip: The ground floor has terrace onto grassed area, but obviously higher up floor have more sea views

This was my first trip to the Savoy since the late 80's this time using a timeshare exchange. The new hotel/apartment was as good as ever though had lost some of the old world charm of the original Savoy (now flattened with only a small portion of the once beautiful grounds used as a short cut through to the next road up). However it was interestingly & delightfully appointed both in the apartment and public spaces. It was very quiet not being in the school holidays. The apartment 1226 was excellently appointed, had excellent views towards Reid's but got little sun on the balcony most of the time. The service was friendly & excellent from everyone we dealt with. One of the doorman had been with the Savoy for 27 years and was extremely knowledgeable and helpful from the moment we arrived to the time of our departure pointing us in the direction of a taxi driver who spoke excellent English to arrange a trip up into the mountains via the wickerworks at Camacha. A problem with the safe on arrival was dealt with within minutes once reported, as was the leaking shower head. The swimming & leisure facilities were excellent.
As other people have reported the cost of beverages and food within the hotel were high but it is 5* although one wonders if the hotel is doing itself a disservice as ther are many restaurants offering good food both nearby and a little further away in the Old Town.

The savoy is superb quality. We had a one bedroomed apartment with great views over sea and harbour from balcony. Well laid out with everything you could need and a 'huge' bed. Maid service everyday. The bar is slightly pricey but nothing more than you would expect for quality of hotel and does make excellent drinks and cocktails. Staff were very helpful in organising excursions and restaurant bookings.

No complaints my only comment would be that this is not a hotel for younger tourists - we are in our 40's and felt like kids! The entertainment does reflect this so if you're looking for young an trendy this is not the hotel for you!

Having knocked down the old Savoy, we expected that the Royal Savoy would be very busy over the Easter period but that wasn't the case; the age profile of guests, the cost of flights and the recession seems to have had an impact on both the hotel and Madeira.Unusually there were a number of children at the hotel but they were fine and not a problem.Trouble with this hotel is the 5* cost of food and drinks but more importantly the dining room is too big and cavernous, lacking atmosphere. The quality of food is excellent however and the cost not out of line with top quality restaurants in the town.It is looking a little tired in some of the studios but most of the public areas are fine.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a studio that gets the sun, some studios have permanent shade. All rooms have a vi...
