I have just returned with my fiance from a 7 night stay at the Tivoli Madeira. If you are looking for trendy don't go however if yiou want to relax its a good choice. Overall we had a really good stay, I will start with the positives; our room (339) wasn't big but it was comfortable , the firm beds were good and we slept like babies, we had the sound of the ocean to fall asleep to so that probably helped and a view of the pool and promenade.
The breakfast is brilliant, loads of fresh fruit and healthy options as well as the full cooked shebang, I did spot pastry, cakes and champagne for those that wanted.
The barman does some great (if expensive) cocktails, try the mochatini..
The indoor swimming pool is really warm and big enough to do lengths, just get there before the crowd. Gym is great.
Bad points: Spa was not well cleaned, it felt grubby, they did not supply soap in the showers so you can imagine people are showering but not getting clean. No water to throw on the steam room seats, so a little yuck, especially when a naked european man is resting his bits on it :-/. Spa staff not very proffesional, you had to hang around for pool men to get a towel which could sometimes take a while.
Outdoor pool lovely but FREEZING.
Room cleaning service is a bit slack, I noticed my bath was not properly cleaned on a daily basis.
Hotel entertainment a bit cringy however entertaining after a few cocktails at the bar.
The hotel is located away from Old Funchal however there are a few nice restaurants a short walk away from Funchal. The downstairs restaurant by the promenade are nice. Also there is a hotel bus to Funchal (if you can squeeze on it).
We'd go back, maybe when it's raining less.
