My sister and I booked our stay in Feb 2008 and we were aware that building works were going on around the hotel, but were told that major works would be finished as the new hotels would be ready for internal equipping by then. We requested a twin room away from any noise and were assured that this is what we would get.
We arrived at 9 pm on a Sat evening and had to lug our own luggage up the steep steps without any assistance from the rude staff. The staff did not welcome us to the hotel and just handed our room key without any information as to where the lifts were, or where we should get breakfast etc.
Upon arriving in our room, we found a king size bed and once we had let them know their mistake they moved us to a twin bedded room - the beds are as hard as a board - not comfortable whatsoever. We had a vision of a crane from our balcony window but this did not concern us immediately.
The hotel is more of a three/four star - certainly not five star standard - they have addressed public areas, but the rooms are very basic and looked tired, with an inefficient air conditioning system. Breakfast was average, with a lot on offer, but no care taken in presentation. the hotel had no atmosphere, and the nightclub had been closed earlier in the season due to lack of custom.
Monday arrived and so did the noise of JCBs and pneumatic drills - when we mentioned this the hotel offered to give us a larger room, but this was not the issue - we could still hear the noise from the room and so the problem would not be solved. The hotel to the right of the Tivoli is still in a major stage of build, certainly not internal works only.
The hotel made us wait all day, having had to contact Expedia (who were useless) and eventually decided that they would move us to the Pestana Grand which was a superb five star hotel with courteous staff.
My advice would be to check that the hotels either side are open for business before booking a stay at the Tivoli - I for one will not consider staying there again.
