“Good place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2014 via mobile

Our first trip to Madeira. Pleased with the hotel - very friendly helpful welcome by reception and Sara on guest services.. Lovely view from reception of sea and pool. Room spacious and bathroom good size- all very clean and well appointed. Bed and pillows comfy; water and soft drinks in the fridge. Hair dryer feeble though- because of this I booked to have hair washed and blow dried by the hotel hairdresser. She did a great job - would recommend -she doesn't speak much English but understood hairdressing requests!
Food in the buffet good and varied in the week we were there. Puddings exceptional!!!! All like dinner party desserts- much better than most hotels we have experienced and worth a taste of each. Food replenished regularly so even if you ate late there were the same choices. Service in the restaurants we found to be good- agreed that often there was no one to greet you but we quite like finding our own table.
Speciality restaurants were ok... Menues were limited to 2 choices per course in the Italian and Maderian so 2 x in each was enough ; Japenese was fun as they cook in front of you- set menu though so check before if you have dislikes or allergies. A change from the buffet.
Pool area and beds well set out - didn't try the pool as unheated!
The main bar in the reception area was good to sit in for pre dinner drinks - good service and atmosphere
Location of hotel good- out of the back gate onto the prom - turn right and walk for about 30 mins to a nice bar / restaurant overlooking a Stoney beach; turn left and walk into Funchal in about 25 mins. Buses from next hotel right down into Funchal every 20 mins - cost 1.60 euros each way
Whole day West coast min bus tour was great! Also enjoyed the cable car rides upto the top and then down to the Botanical gardens and back. Great views. Nice to wander along the old streets in Funchal - go around the Fort for the views and also look out for all the painted doors We liked it all and will definitely return
to Madeira. The Portuguese people were friendly, polite and helpful and seemed to have a pride in their work.

I have read the recent reviews, and now experienced a two week all inclusive holiday at the enotel lido for myself.
I feel that for what we paid, we had good value, not sure what the 5* is about, for 5* I would expect a lot more than what is on offer.Having stayed in 4* hotels in Portugal before, I would rate this hotel on par with any them. But think of what you are paying, I paid less than £1,000 each for a decent all inclusive for two weeks.
My only gripe would be the nightly entertainment, very poor so if you don't mix very easily the evenings by the bar could be long.
The rooms are good, staff friendly and anything you want just ask, don't suffer on. I did notice some people were given the rooms overlooking the car park and waste compactor, when they complained they were told they would have to pay extra for a pool view.
We were given pool view rooms automatically, without additional payments on floor 2, I'm not saying that this is the best as I never went on the other floors but no lift to the restaurant, down one flight of steps to the pool and bar and promenade, this felt easy and leisurely every day.

Room Tip: As mentioned, I can only say what I have experienced, and floor 2 with a pool view was a good floor...

Everything was as good as it was in June last year, this time we were there for 4 weeks in January/February and we were still able to sit outside under parasols with our drinks the food the staff and the service were as good as last time which was excellent. The hotel is very clean and is easy to get around with the lack of steps. We have already booked to go back in June this year and are very much looking forward to it.

I have just got back from Madeira with my wife and twee teenage children. We opted for this all inclusive accommodation as our son never stops eating.

Our two bedroom suite was very nice and comfortable and the standard we expect of Madeira. The rest of the hotel was very nice and well appointed. The pool area was a bit of an issue. The day time snack bar had outside tables as you expected but when people left the table they were not cleared as quickly as you would normally expected. This lead to tables being dive bombed by pigeons and gulls. I personally don't like pigeons and was not too happy when half a dozen started scavenging from the next table. A little later was on a sun lounger and decided to wander to the snack bar to get an ice cream (which was very nice). I quickly realised that going bare foot was a mistake as I had to dodge around quite a substantial amount of old and fresh bird poo. As I looked around I realised it was an issue for most of the pool area with some also on the sun loungers.

The Japanese themed restaurant was very good but the Italian and Madeiran were very mediocre. I turned up to the Madeiran 10 minutes before my table booking and got told to go away in quite a rude manner. The restaurant was empty just that they were not ready. The bar on that floor was clossed so we had to got to another floor to wait for our table.

The buffet was reasonable but the food was not great with the exception of the freshly made omelettes. The standards of food was well below the quality you would typically get in Madeira. We have had far better food in the back street bars.

The evening entertainment was usually to a high standard including a guy playing a clarinet and saxophone who was excellent one evening.

In a five star hotel I actually expect to be able to use the sauna, jacuzzi and steam room without having to pay extra. You have to pay quite a steep surcharge to use these as you do for wifi. The wifi is the most expensive I have every seen and that includes the Ritz-Cartlon in Abu Dhabi and The Grosvenor House on Park Lane (you don't pay for the spa in these either!!).

We were also amazed at the skew towards very elderly people with some being very infirm. It was actually a concern in the buffet as to whether they would cause an accident.

We love Madeira but we won't be back to the Enotel Lido.

Room Tip: Go for a high room with sea view.

Personally we think some of the reviews are rather harsh. First time we have done all inclusive and we were not at all disappointed. Yes they could do with more bar staff at peak times but that was only because everyone was making the most of the free drinks! However we couldn't fault the effort made by ALL the staff-they worked like trojans which isn't seen too often in England! The service was excellent considering their work load and we were never kept waiting any longer than I would find perfectly acceptable.Food was an excellent standard for buffet style and the choice was extremely extensive. Something new was added to each day so was never the same two days in a row. We tried two of the three themed restaurants and they certainly offered something different to shall we say , the excesses of the buffet restaurant where I have to admit , we were guilty of over indulgence-the downside
of having too much choice at times! Had to learn to pace ourselves! All I can say is perhaps things have improved since some of the reviewers stayed there. We were asked to do a customer satisfaction survey so the hotel would certainly at least want guests' reviews! We certainly didn't hear any moanings or grumbles.
A minor criticism for us at least, was that the mattresses were hard but can't please everyone all the time as they say, but cleanliness was faultless
Both my wife and I would have no hesitation in returning to both Madeira and this hotel It may not quite be 5 star as we know it but then it hasn't the 5 star prices as we know either! It was excellent value for money.
Walk into town centre seemed longer as the holiday progressed but good exercise and local bus service is excellent and good value when the exercise becomes too much! Bus stops very close to hotel.
In the 10 nights we were there the evening entertainment only disappointed once and at least there was evening entertainment!
We ourselves heard of three couples who asked if they could extend their stay but they were fully booked. Don't think that would be the case if it was just average!
Must admit,we didnt try spa or pools as not our cup of tea but they looked extremely inviting and in a lovely setting. Overall we really enjoyed it and we are not that easily impressed so should tick the boxes of the vast majority of people from our experience.

Stayed for 1 week here, the hotel is fine, it's clean and tidy and some parts quite modern , the gym was well equipped too, but it let itself down badly to us for several reasons which is why I would be hesitant to give this 5 stars.
The good points, a nice walk into town about 40mins and stunning views from rooms and public areas, these were kept spotless and I'm sorry to say that this is as far as I would go for good points.
The bad points, found them to be hugely understaffed which resulted in waiting ages to be served coffee in morning breakfast, no one there to greet you into restaurant so invariably find your own table and hope to Catch the eye of someone!! Similar problems in bars except for Roberto in lobby bar, you could often be standing at bar that was completely unattended for ages, being of younger years to most guest we were quite often overlooked in bars too. Was amazed one day whilst in sports bar which by the way does not open late at night even though it's says til 02.30 that while listening to music on TV channel the barman just turns off sound on it and then turns up volume for euro 2016 draw and proceeds to watch it in Portuguese with 1 other person, rude, he is there to work, we found most of staff quite unfriendly except for Roberto and Sara the guests relations person
The food is average at best, breakfast good, Maderian truly awful, Italian ok and never got into japenese as always seemed to be shut despite being told it's open tues-sat, we saw it open once on a weekend, but only seemed 1 sitting part of reason I chose here was cos of different eating options, ate out every night bar 2 as atmosphere in restaurant dire and food bland and lukewarm
Rooms were fine, spacious but we never seemed to have our water replaced and on one occasion only 1 towel left.
Pool too cold outside (not their fault) but could use indoor pool if wanted, never did but saw others in there, you need a hat for it too.
Evening entertainment was bad I'm afraid, only ever peeked round door to see what was going on, usually nothing ! Guess there is a certain clientele that like it sort of stuff but not for us, the place just died after 10pm, lobby bar or lounge bar open but only til 12am, god forbid you would want to stay up any later!
Loved the island but no would not return here again, worried of advice to them, get in more staff for restaurant and bars , crazy having 3 waiters per section, they clearly cannot cope

Room Tip: Most have sea view ones facing pools get most sun
