“excellant holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

we spent christmas & new year at this hotel and enjoyed a wonderful two weeks, the staff are wonderful will go out of their way to help you. Our room overlooking the pool was large ,spotless, as was the bathroom (worth paying a little more for) The food was very good new years gala dinner was excellent,we met up with a great bunch of holidaymakers staying at the hotel and i am sure this helped with our stay . Close by are loads of places to eat or just go for a drink if you feel the need to get out ,bus stop facing the hotel (up asteep set of steps) easy to get into town worth buying the ten trip bus ticket, their is no limit to times or distance you travel very good value. The only down-side to our stay is that the area is VERY steep and would not suit anyone with walking problems.

Room Tip: rooms over the pool are worth the extra money ,the other rooms are over a car-park and it can be ver...

We arrived in Funchal on 31/12/12 in order to celebrate the new year, which I would recommend to anyone. The firework display was amazing.
First impressions on the Enotel Lido Hotel were very good. It has a nice reception, with a great view over the sea and pool area. There is also a nice bar opposite the reception. Unfortunately though there were certain factors which did taint my overall view of this hotel.
It is a nice hotel, which is reasonably priced to stay at, therefore I would say it was good value. The negative points were as follows: 1.Although the rooms were nice, with a modern feel, many of them (and believe me we looked at quite a few) had a drainage problem in the bathroom, which gave off a very unpleasant smell. We did move rooms, and were offered an upgraded room, but it smelt even worse. Therefore, we opted for a standard room without the smell. 2. There is no free wi-fi, which is to be expected I suppose, however at 22 Euros per day or 88 for the week, I thought it was quite pricey. 3. Due to having cause for complaint we did, in the early stages, have quite a bit of contact with the reception staff. We found them to be unhelpful and really quite rude, however, once we got a manager involved (a female whose name I didn't catch) then the service really improved. She was excellent and did everything to see that we were happy with our rooms. 4. A small point, but there is not one iron and ironing board in the entire hotel. This is due to health and safety reasons!! 5. Food - you have various options, as you can either stick to the main restaurant or one of the three themed restaurants - Madeira , Italian or Japanese. The main restaurant food was okay, nothing special, but I have definitely had worse. The Madeiran restaurant , we found was very good (despite complaints from some customers). We didn't enjoy the Japanese (and we have had it before), it was l a bit tasteless. We never got to the Italian, although we heard it was good. We did have to complain regarding these restaurants as, at first we couldn't get a table at any of them, due to them opening on selected nights only. A complaint soon sorted this out. 6. The beds were the most uncomfortable we have ever slept in as they were rock hard. We did complain and each bed was covered with a topper, which helped a bit.
Now to the positive points and there are several: 1. The setting is excellent with the hotel positioned right on the seafront. 2. The outside pool area is very nice with plenty of beds 3. Everywhere is immaculately clean 4. The inside pool is very my nice and a good size, however all swimmers must wear swimming caps, which they sell for 4 Euros 5. The bar staff are excellent 6. There is a snack bar by the pool, which does pizza, salad, chips etc and is very good 7. The First Choice rep, called Thomas was very good. As stated earlier we did have cause to complain and fully expected to meet some resistance, however, Thomas was very efficient and quickly sorted out each issue. 8. The evening entertainment was okay, but I wouldn't expect too much. The guy playing the sax is great.
To conclude, all in all, the Enotel Lido is a nice hotel, which at home would be a 3/4 star, but it wasn't expensive. If you're booked to go there then make sure you have a sea/pool view and a room that doesn't smell, although they appear to be quite a rarity. It's a nice hotel, but I don't think we would back there.

Room Tip: Pool/sea view room and go straight to the bathroom to check whether or not it has a drainage problem...

Just returned from 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year. Hotel met all expectations our room was spacious and comfortable with a nice view of the sea and pool. All the staff were most helpful and friendly with a special mention for the Guest Relations team who added the extra value. News Years eve was the highlight of the holiday what a show they put on in Funchal. I would not hesitate to recommend the Enotel Lido their AI package makes life so easy.

Just spent Christmas at this hotel travelled with Saga on AI. I had booked a single room but did get a spacious double room with pool and sea view. The hotel is in a good position with lovely walks to Funchal etc,
All the staff were very helpful and pleasant. I did not see any elderly Saga guests getting drunk on the fee drinks and with regard to the food it was generally quite decent, sometime not hot especially breakfast but there was show cooking where you could have fresh cooked meat or fish and an omelette for breakfast. The only themed restaurant I did not like was the Japanese, if you have been to a real Japanese restaurant don't go to this one. Just one chef who poured salt liberally over all the veg, fish and meat and managed to overcook it all - not good. The other two were both very good. You do get fed up with the buffet food after two or three days.On Christmas Eve and day we had bottles of wine on the table but after this we were only offered very insipid carafe wine by the glass, when I questioned this the resaurant manager said that the bottles were only for Christmas.
The hotel was nice and quiet at nights, beds are a bit firm and there is still the problem with the drains smell, I only noticed it once but my next door neighbor had it the whole time and solved it by putting the waste bin over the drain hole under the sink. On the whole I think this is a good hotel, I would go again.

Room Tip: I was on the sixth floor which had good views and caught the afternoon sun.

Just arrived back from spending Christmas and New Year at the Enotel Lido, Madeira. We were in standard rooms with a side sea view which were very spacious, clean and comfortable. Just a small niggle - the mattresses are very firm - but of course some people find that great. The cleanliness of not only the private rooms but the hotel generally was very good. The food was very good with a wide selection available. Ironically, the Christmas Day evening meal was a little lacking in atmosphere but to the Madeiriense it's New Year that is the real event and the New Years Eve gala dinner did not disappoint. In fact the fillet beef (just one of the offerings) was probably the finest I have ever tasted.

The hotel does not provide free wi-fi (a charge applies - we didn't bother) so there is sometimes a wait to use the two guest computers - might be a problem for guests who cannot do without their regular computer fix!

The hotel's location is so convenient for buses into Funchal (do use the top up cards that can be bought on the buses, tobaccanists or at the bus info centres) as they do save you some euros. The hop on, hop off buses also stop nearby. We used the yellow bus - 12 euros for a 2 day ticket, encompassing two tours and, during the Christmas 12 days, a free night time 1 hour tour of the Funchal Christmas lights - absolutely fantastic.

We also went to the Marina to see the New Years Eve fireworks. There were four cruise ships anchored up in the docks and at least 3 more anchored outside, the atmosphere was electric and the fireworks were just wonderful - if you have not seen them, really something to add to your ' must see' list.

We travelled with elderly parents and they too enjoyed the whole experience. The hotel staff just could not do enough to help and we would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

We arrived very late on Christmas Eve and were shown to our suite which was really lovely and had a microwave, cooker, coffee machine, cutlery, crockery, etc. which was a bit silly we thought for an all inclusive package, but it was excellent although the cream sofa was a little stained. One thing it did not not have was an iron so we asked for an iron and ironing board as dinner was in an hour and clothes were still in our case and a little creased. We were told this was not possible and we had to use the laundry service. We asked if they could do it now, but it was not open and would take 1 or 2 days because of Christmas. We asked what we could do and they just said "I'm sorry but we can't help"! So we went to dinner creased - 5 star, I don't think so. We mentioned it to Guest Relations who said "I will tell our Manager and put it in my report and it will be read by some 'really big people' ". I couldn't believe it. She spoke to us like she spoke to the OAPs there, like we were children.

If you love Saga, you will love this hotel. It was just full of drunken old people who were hitting the free bar like there was no tomorrow. No entertainment other than the sort they would enjoy. They loved the tasteless food but I suppose when you are on a pension its like heaven.

The Japanese is like a conveyor belt system. We had got a bit lost and arrived ten minutes late for our sitting. All courses are cooked together for everyone at the same time. So if you don't want onions in your stir fry then its tough. They will not prepare anything just for you. The food was cold and it was supposed to have come off the griddle. There was one "chef" banging stuff around and huffing. One couple walked out then we followed them. We had been recommended the Japanese but it was really awful. I mean seriously awful. I understand there were usually 2 chefs so perhaps it was not the usually one, but we didn't go again. Told the manager and he just made concerned expressions, but did nothing.

Christmas day "Gala Buffet" was a disaster. No roast turkey and all the trimmings, instead steamed turkey and only mediterranean vegetables, oh and duchess potatoes cooked from frozen and then scattered with Raisins! The food was awful - tinned mushrooms, reconstituted ham shaped to look like bacon, really cheap baked beans and tomatoes that really tasted of absolutely nothing. It was tasteless and horrible. The only one good meal we had was the buffet on the night of 27th December.

Perhaps I'm too critical, perhaps I have travelled and stayed in excellent hotels, but this was a really disappointing holiday and I will never go to this hotel again.

First impressions were good ,lovely spacious reception with bar, spotlessly clean everywhere the bedroom was superb overlooking the pool & sea ,air very freshThe food in the maderian restaurant was excellent as was the japanese, the italian was diabolical uncooked pizza dough & tough veal the tiramisus was a mess of cream & chocolate. The paked lunch was appalling chucked in a plastic carrier bag ,wrapped in clingfilm with two bottles of water & two bits of squashed, the second time we requested a packed lunch after telling the manager who admitted that he would't have eaten it ,it was no better & our order was given to some else.No tea & coffee making facilities in the rooms no shampoo or shower gel in" the spa"no fresh fruit juices for those who are teetotal ,5 star I don't think,
,The staff were very pleasant & helpful .If you have any treatments in the spa book Roselia "TOP"beware the turkish bath is reluctant to work.

Room Tip: ask for an up grade to superior room more spacious
