“Beautiful Madeiria”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

Classy hotel, always clean and spotless, room unexpectedly large and comfortable. Staff friendly, efficient and always willing to help.
The hotel has a lovely vista and a great pool, we spent many an afternoon cooling off in it, the weather was mostly good and even if it did rain this never lasted long . They perhaps could benefit from some more umbrellas at the pools we were really lucky with the weather 28 - 29 some days.
There is a great snack bar at the pool that you can get food from most of the day which is good, the main dining room is large, efficiently run and the food is good. You can also book in the three speciality restaurants and we loved the maderia one the best. Cannot fault the food and always happy when no-one is I'll - real plus and credit to the hotel.
Impressed with the management, who are very viasable and continually quality checking everything - all areas always clean especially the toilets.
The top bar at reception is excellent for quality branded drinks with Roberto always giving great service. They often had a pianist playing which was nice.
Really pleased they had a library and book swap , they all have a shop and often have jewelry sales.
One minor issue was the entertainment which we found to be poor on the whole, as this is a all inclusive hotel we believe that if they could improve on this area then this would be fantastic. Otherwise we could not fault this hotel and we really impressed with the quality and value for money and we had almost enjoyable time in our first visit to Maderia. Wonderful hotel, wonderful holiday.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the hotel with a side view of the hotel - the road can be a little nois...

We were looking forward to our first visit to Maderia and were excited to see our hotel.
The room was very nice had a large bed and a view over the pool and sea.
As our holiday progressed we found the room not as clean fridge not replenished and towels not always replaced.
However this was nothing compared to the restaurant experience . We were not met and shown to a table quite often there were no tables for two available and we had to leave and try later.
It was annoying as there were plenty ot tables for large groups not being used.
We had to serve our own wine .the food although plenty was barely warm, and one evening the meat when cut into was raw!! We did have a fresh steak cooked by a chef in `the hatch" one evening which was edible and hot. this is the first holiday we have been on and lost weight.
We lived on fruit salad and soup. Not enough sun shades they are very tired beds to close.

We have just returned from a week in this hotel. Junior suite was lovely with fantastic views, however, these suites being at the end of the hotel, have balconies which also serve as a fire escape. Despite the fire escape door saying 'use in emergency only' annoyingly people couldnt resist opening the door, which infringed on you privacy on the balcony. We caught one English bloke out on our balcony taking photos!!! - if you want the view - pay for it as we did, dont infringe on other peoples privacy!!! MANAGEMENT TAKE NOTE.

ALSO - MANAGEMENT TAKE NOTE - The restaurants MUST IMPOSE A DRESS CODE if they want 5 star status. How can ladies who have obviously taken care to dress for dinner let themselves be accomanied by a slob in shorts and flip flops, as one reviewer says - one bloke had same t shirt and shorts for pool and meals for a week!!! talk about travel light!!!

Didnt try the Japanese, but italian and Madeiran we ok - a little mean on the wine - had to ask for a 2nd glass, whereas in the buffest restaurant you could help yourself.

One reviewer said they had to buy water - well if they looked at the bar or in the pool restaurant they would see an abundance of bottled water - both still and fizzy - which you could help yourself, likewise tea bags etc. Maids did replenish our room, they just must have been unlucky with their maid.

Staff generally a bit glum, I think they are understaffed and overworked, however Roberto in the piano bar was lovely and an excellent barman. Spa staff extremly off putting and miserable, although the little girl who did manicure/pedicure was lovely.

All in all we had a lovely peaceful relaxing holiday, would recommend the hotel, but just dont expect 5 star service as they havnt got the staff to do it, and the management are not vigilant in making sure that guests dress appropriately for dinner!

Room Tip: Suites have panoramic view, others have side views

My friend and I stayed at this hotel at the end of August. I had looked on trip advisor before we booked and noted all that was said. However, I thought it can't really be that bad some people must be very fussy!! We paid extra to have a suite which was not cleaned properly, the balcony was not swept once in the whole week! One day we had to wait for over an hour for towels so couldn't take a shower. I found the staff most unfriendly especially at the Spa reception where you picked up the pool towels. Often towels were not ready at 8 in the morning when they were supposed to be but if you tried to get your fresh towels the night before you were refused. The food was another matter - even though we had paid to be all inclusive only ate once in the restaurant after that experience we ate out every other night! I would definitely not stay at another Enotel Hotel.

My wife and I returned from the Enotel Lido, after a two week break, on the 10th September. It was an enjoyable and relaxing break however, as metioned by several other reviews on this hotel, it was good but not by any means excellent.

The first impression we had on arrival at the hotel was how beautiful it was. It's very well situated just outside the main centre of Funchal and has excellent views of the sea, as well as a lovely promenade at the back of the hotel for nice enjoyable walks. On checking in to the hotel we were somewhat surprised at the lack of information (or assistance to our rooms with our baggage) that was provided to us. After queueing to check in for around half an hour, we were given our room keys and basically were left to go and find our room. This was a first for us however, this is apparently how the desk staff work at this hotel.

The hotel room itself was very nice. It was a double deluxe on the second floor overlooking both the pool and the sea. It was very spacious with a large double bed (which was extremely comfortable) with a large bathroom and seperate shower cubicle. As mentioned by other reviews, the rooms do contain a mini fridge which is meant to be filled on a daily basis with water and soft drinks, also a kettle with teas coffes and milk. This was replenished daily for the first 4 or 5 days however, after the 5th day it stopped and I basically had to go on an expedition to find the maids servicing our floor or make a daily trip to the shop across the road and purchase bottles of water. This annoyed me slightly because even although it's only water or tea bags its part of the package that these will be replaced on a daily basis and quite clearly this is not the case. If you are going to provide this service either do it completely or don't do it at all. There is nothing worse returning to your room after an extremely hot day at the pool to realise you have no water to quench your thirst. I gave up after the first week and went to the shop and bought a multi pack of water, tea bags and milk, at least that way I didn't have to play find the maid around the hotel to ask for some water.

The pool area at the hotel is very nice, this also has fantastic views of the sea and quick access to the pedestrian promenade which runs almost the whole way into Funchal. I would highly recommend walking the length of the promenade to anyone visiting as the views are quite spectecular and there are some very nice cafes and bars along the way. As metioned by others, there does seem to be an issue (which on reading some of the reviews dating back to the very early part of this year) with parasols around the bathing area of the pool. The parasols themselves are very old, tatty and dated and considering the number of bathing loungers around the pool there was only about two dozen at the most, nowhere near enough. The other issue regarding the pool area is the bathing loungers and the space in which they occupy. You are practically on top of the people on either side of you as there are just so many of them crammed in to a very small area. There is definitely a problem with your own personal space while sunbathing here however, as the hotel was not full during our visit we were able to move 2 beds and find a bit of space to relax.

The food at the main buffet was actually quite good and we both rather enjoyed it to be honest. I had read quite a few reviews prior to going and some of the reviews were less than complimentary regarding the buffet. For us, this was not the case. Although the breakfast was very 'samey', both the lunch and evening meals were very nice with plenty of selection and the buffet hall itself was a pleasent place to sit and enjoy a meal and a glass of wine in reasonable comfort. As for the a' la carte restaurants, well I think this was a bit hit and miss to be fair. The Japonese restaurant is by far the top thing about this hotel. It is a fantastic restaurant and a pretty good way to start your evening as the food is out of this world and the staff here were very nice and quite entertaining. The Madeiran restaurant was average the starter was very nice indeed (a typical Madeiran soup) however, both the main and the dessert weren't really up to much in my opinion, added to that the table and chairs on which you sit are that of a plastic patio set. Not very comfortable and very sweaty on your legs! The Italian restaurant, well the less I say about this the better! However, I was informed, by another couple who visited it on the second week, that due to the amount of compliants the previous week the menu had been changed. We never went back but the comments we heard from the second week at this restaurant sounded like a better meal than the one we had the week previous.

The majority of the staff here are great, they are definitely this hotels greatest asset. You can tell they are completely overworked as you see them there serving you all day into the early hours of the morning. Personaly, I do think the hotel is under staffed. This just seems to be the modern world at the minute, trying to save on overhead costs where possible. This is not a cheap place to come to, actually it's quite an expensive place to stay. I just think that the addition of a handfull more staff would actually benefit the hotel and the service to the guests which would match that of a regular 4 star hotel in other parts of Europe.

As I say in the title of this review, it was quite a nice relaxing break and the hotel was good in the most part. I know I have spoken in detail about about several of the negatives however, comparing this to other 4 and 5 star hotels that my wife and I have stayed in other parts of the world, this could potentialy be up there if a few simple changes where made.

Please do not fret if you have booked this hotel and are reading through these reviews (as my wife and I do prior to our holiday) before you go. Depite all I have spoken about, we did have an enjoyable time, and although we probably wouldn't rush back here anytime in the near future, we were glad we came.

Room Tip: Any of the rooms that face inwards to the pool area provide very good views of both the pool and the...

My wife and I recently stayed for 2 weeks at the Enotel Lido and had an enjoyable holiday but, as mentioned by other reviewers, the hotel should not be considered as 5 Star standard.

We had booked a superior room but on inspection found this to be on the first floor immediately above the poolside restaurant. The smell of cooking was overwhelming and we requested a move but were told that the only alternative was a chargeable upgrade to a junior suite. We decided to take this option and were very impressed with the room and large terrace. However, it does raise the question why superior rooms are in an inferior position to the standard rooms!

The food in the Maderian and Japanese restaurants was very good (the Italian restaurant was not tried) but the offerings in the main buffet restaurant did vary. It was good initially but changed significantly on Sunday 9 September when both breakfast and lunch were unacceptable. On both occasions the food was inedible or seriously overcooked, which left the impression that it was re-heated from the previous day (especially as most of the dishes were remarkably similar to those of the previous day). An attempt was made to speak to the restaurant manager but he was not interested, and did not understand English.

Other areas which need improving before this could be a genuine 5 Star hotel are:

- Management being more evident and interested in their guests. There was no-one to welcome guests on arrival or in the dining room.
- Provide more information. For example, there was no directory of services in the bedroom, and no warning that the public area on one of the floors was being closed for refurbishment.
- Staff acting as if they enjoyed serving guests (this comment does not apply to the piano bar who were excellent).
- Replace the extremely tatty sunshades which are a disgrace. We were told that they were on order, but this seems to have been the response for a number of months. More sunshades are also necessary.
- Arrange the cleaning of the pool area at time convenient to the guests, not the staff. Often the cleaning, which included hosing down the area, occurred mid-morning requiring the guests to leave the sun beds if they were not to get soaked.
- Apply a dress code policy for the dining room. Shorts and flip-flops were worn by a number of guests for the evening meal (one guest appeared to wear the same shorts for all meals, and for swimming, every day!).

We have stayed at a number of 5 Star All Inclusive hotels in Greece where the management and staff try their hardest to ensure guests receive an excellent service, but this attitude is certainly missing from the Enotel Lido. It is usual for hotels to request guests to complete questionnaires to gauge their level of satisfaction; I asked for one from the Enotel Lido reception and was told that the hotel did not require any feedback – I think this says a lot!

Room Tip: Junior suites are expensive but worth the extra money
