“Not consistent for 4 stars”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013

Stayed at this hotel in september for 3 days in a business trip. Arriving at the lobby I was fairly disapointed with the overall building. Though it is in a good place for sightseeing and walking it is not a true 4 stars, for portuguese standards. The hotel is packed with french tourists and the average age is around 60. Think it is not suited for business. The furniture is dated buy everything is clean but you can smell old. What did surprise me was that throughtout the stay service was not consistent and sometimes even arrogant in the main lobby and restaurant.
In sum I think that there are better options in Madeira for the same price and I did not feel welcomed.

Stayed for a week in Alto Lido, not spending that much time there except for a couple of hours at the pool and sleeping. Staff at the reception were very friendly. The place is very quite overall and the feeling is that there is not much going on except for the occasional show at the bar salon. The breakfast was very nice in both diversity and quality

Hotel quite good, breakfast OK but stay away from the sausages and bacon as these are completely different form the UK .
The staff were friendly apart from one waitress in the restaurant at breakfast time who was very rude (large lady with pony tail) and would be more suited working in a prison canteen.
Room was very clean and spacious but could do with tea/coffee making facilities, bathroom was large with overhead shower above the bath.
2 swimming pools with 1 being indoor with sliding glass roof but water just as cold as the outdoor pool. (no decent beaches in Madeira but countryside is beautiful)
Hotel would be more suited to couples or older people as poolside and bars are very quiet with very few children / teenagers which I found to be great as no loud music and very few teenagers running amok at the swimming pool - after years of family holidays with the kids it was the first time my wife and I were away by ourselves and it was peace and quiet - brilliant for relaxing before returning to work.
The hotel is approx 10 minutes by taxi to the center of Funchal and cost approx €6.50, there is also a free shuttle bus which runs twice in the morning and in the afternoon but you have to walk about 5 minutes to catch this - apparently this is due to ongoing roadworks however cars, taxis and tour buses seem to have no problem picking up or dropping quests off at the hotel door so I can't understand why the shuttle bus can't stop at the hotel door !!.
There are quite a few restaurants within walking distance with meals costing approx €15 to £20 euro, I tried one of the tourist menus @ €12 per head for 3 course meal at the Chancellor Restaurant but was very disappointed as I had asked for my main meal which was sirloin stake to be "well done" but when received it was raw on the inside, I thought maybe the waiter misunderstood me so I called him down and told him that I requested my stake to be "well done" and ask for my meal to be replaced and again emphasized for a "well done" stake, well the 2nd stake was worst that the 1st with blood oozing out when cut. I called waiter down again and ask him to take it away as it was not what I had asked for and this time it was not to be replaced as my wife had already finished her meal 15 minutes earlier , when ask for the bill they tried to charge me the full price when I told them that I would not be paying for the stake the manager ?was were not amused and it took him 5 minutes to come back with an amended bill (probably trying to hold out to see if I would give in and pay the full price). Anyway this was the only bad experience eating out as all the other restaurants were excellent as the old saying goes you get what you pay for.
I would still recommend the Alto Lido hotel especially to people who want a quiet peaceful holiday as for Madeira the countryside is beautiful and most of the people warm and friendly .

It is a very nice hotel. We liked the staff, cleaning and breakfast the most. If you look for a price+value option, this is definitely it. The location is good: a lot of restaurants around, city-centre is about 25 minutes walk, 2 big shopping centres and a beach really close-by.

Room Tip: Studio rooms with a sea-view are good.

This was our hotel as part of a package holiday with Monarch (Cosmos). This hotel is on the main route to Funchal from the Lido area. As luck would have it the road was closed for alterations so it was very quiet.

We had a room on the 6th floor with a side sea view overlooking waste land. This hotel looks very much like a standard business hotel. The rooms have that standard layout and furniture including mirror and pictures with two singles put together to make a double but with two single sheets fitted. It would have been nice to have some tea making facilities. The bathroom was very clean and the room had maid service every day. The breakfast was as mentioned by others a buffet with cold meats, cheese and rolls, cereals, cooked breakfast of, bacon, egg, tomatoes, mushrooms and beans. Fresh fruit, yoghurts, croissants and bread as well as home made cake. Depending upon the time it could get busy with things running out, although they were quickly replaced, so make it a bit earlier. Plenty of tea, coffee and juices.

There were two pools, an indoor one with a sliding roof and an outdoor on which was smaller but deeper. No problems with the sun beds though.

There was entertainment in the bar every evening if you like that kind of thing with a happy hour drinks time and special offer cocktails.

The are plenty of nearby restaurants with the local food restaurants all having similar tourist menus for between 12 and 14 euros (although you may have to ask as they will give you the a la carte).

All in all a pleasant experience and we would happily go there again.

A very pleasant hotel, staff very amenable, breakfast excellent. Evening entertainment a bit repetitive but OK with a nightcap. Unfortunately the road in front of the hotel was being widened so there was a little confusion with vehicles coming pas the hotel only to find they had to turn around and go back. Pick-ups at the hotel were often awkward but everyone seemed to get away within a reasonable period. This is only a minor blip and we would recommend this hotel as friendly and well worth a visit.

Stayed in this big 4 star holiday complex as RCI exchange in a studio unit. Hotel is located in the centre of Lido about 3 km from the centre of Funchal. Hotel has definitely seen better days but was still quite functional.

Studio was big enough for two: bed was king size and in addition to that there was a convertible sofa. Kitchenette had a big fridge, about the only thing we used there. Nice sea view from the balcony on 5th floor.

Bathroom was disappointing: very dark, no light, shower was in the bath (who needs bath anyway?) and without any mat it was deadly slippery. Truly old fashioned safety box was 12 euro a week and was inside a biggish wardrobe. TV had no viewable international channels apart from BBC World and CCN.

Breakfast was good apart from terrible coffee. As RCI guests we could buy a one week package for half price, 52.50 euro per person, good deal. There were a lot of people every morning but staff managed to keep it well organized.

As Estrada Monumental road is currently under construction you have to use the road below it. There is a hotel courtesy bus 4 times a day to Funchal and back, but it's totally useless. It takes double the time than local buses and leaves passengers in the middle of nowhere at least 1 km from the centre. Take the cheap, frequent local bus, they are easy and fast.

Lobby was also disappointing with no newspapers, no TV guides, expensive 5 euro per 30 min internet-pc and sometimes quite ignorant receptionists. Wouldn't stay here again as there are plenty of better options available.
