“Best European Boutique Resort, best service of my life”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 days ago NEW

What a pity that 5 stars is the maximum rating here, This hotel deserves 10 stars on a scale of 1 to 5.
From first till last moment the service has been by far the best of my life and after leaving that great service by the manager did not stop but it turned out to be of gigantic help to me, when seeing my credit card account.
At check-in one can sit down (not often the case in hotels).
I got a suite as an upgrade, the Malabar Suite (the most to the east, above reception building, hidden in the trees but still a great view of Funchal and very private and big). I'd better not say how or why I got it.

When the DVD player slightly malfunctioned, they brought me a brandnew one (much better colours). Beside the bed is a notice that one can request for a softer or harder mattrass. I found it to be too hard so got a brandnew mattrass topper.
Room cleaning was at 2 PM but I did not need it so they did not come back..
There is a minibar. Normally too expensive but in this hotel prices were so reasonable that I used nearly all.
The suite has a separate sitting room that has the ventilation, so that when door closed I did not hear it in the bedroom with the large TV and large bed. Low bed. Great pillows. Big bathroom with bath. Jacuzzi outside (with lighting). Sunken into the floor so I had problem to get into it (first sitting on the sunlounger)..But the 6 jetstreams are only massaging the feet. Big enough for 2.
4 times a shuttle to the city. Book in advance. Taxi is 13 euro.
Very nice garden, should be fantastic in summer. Nice walking on levada to Hortensia TeaHouse or to Monte.
Nobody mentions the dogs. Does not mean they are not there.. Sometimes fierce barking, on 3 sides of the resort, but not often and not at night. Normally this would bother me but here there was so much to enjoy that I forgot about the dogs. Otherwise very peaceful, quiet resort, a place made in Heaven. What a magnificent design (same French architects as of famous Datai in Malaysia and one on Bora Bora).
Reception has DVDs,not many but had my favourite, Girl with a Pearl Earring which I enjoyed quite emotionally (that painting is 10 minutes walk from my house). . They also have CDs and many books in the library. Free internet PC in library.
Nice indoor pool and spa. Outdoor pool cold. Nobody swims in winter, only inside.
Marvellous breakfast. Marvelous dinner. It was crowded. I was told hotel was nearly fully booked (in early January!) .
Noisy restaurant because of screaming children (no music) but room service is wonderful so I ate inside my room for rest of stay.
They have lowered their prices. 2 years ago much more expensive and low occupancy. Manager did a magnificent job.
This is a hotel to have very high on your list.
So great facilities and dedicated young staff. 3 friendly gardeners to keep resort in excellent shape.
Only points of criticism: I did not like the room lighting too much. Either too much or no light in room. A small bedside lamp would help. The 2 that there are have rather bright lamps, but I guess if I had asked they also would have solved that little problem..
Room decoration not very colourful (a lot of natural materials, wood, stone, metal). Next time I will bring myself a colourful poster or tapestry.
Motto of resort is "Inspired by nature" and that is surely true.
A hotel I will never forget.

Room Tip: Rooms 68 & 69 have no view at all, all the rest is quite nice. Suites are above the reception a...

Choupana is simply in a different league from other Funchal hotels. Everything about, from the location, taste in colors, and level of service defies the corporate atmosphere of hotels in "touristy" places like Funchal.

Pointers
* Know what you're getting: It's a resort, not a hotel by the beach. These are two different creatures.
* When you look at Choupana from Funchal, it's among the highest building structures in the area. The snake narrow road to the resort is fun to drive on, if you know your way around manual gear shifts or have arranged for an automatic before arriving at the airport. However, do not hire a car. Use the Choupana shuttle instead and hail a cab late at night, unless you want to go sightseeing on the other side of the island or drive around.
* The hotel, especially the rooms, are well decorated. Room amenities are great. You'll be well stocked. The cleaning crew do not show up early in the morning, and there is usually a bagful of bathroom towels left on the porch.
* Get the deal with breakfast, especially if you're not there for more than say 4-5 days. The combination of tropical fruits, different kinds of cheese and cold cuts will keep you running for the rest of the day, at least until a late lunch.
* The restaurant is reasonably priced and open until pretty late (22:30). The fish dishes I tried were well prepared. In general fish in Funchal is probably the way to go anyway.
* Finally, the staff. Very helpful. When in doubt about where to go when, just ask.

Room Tip: Get a room with a sea view.

This is a really really nice place - luxurious but nevertheless very relaxed! The design of the rooms is fantastic (they have renewed the TV set, now with DVD/CD player), the views are just great. The hotel is far up the hills and it tends to be quite a bit colder and also more cloudy - but it is worth the risk.
There is some room for improvement: breakfast is great, local cheese and fruit and a quick-access and better-quality coffee/tea buffet would be nice. The shuttle service should be more flexible - if fully booked (there are only about 8-10 seats) it should go twice. The hotel prides itself as being environmentally sensitive, but every day the service team lights ALL lamps when leaving (while guests are advised in the directory to not leave chargers plugged in) and it exchanges ALL towels (in spite of the usual advise to either hang or... ). The very fancy outdoor pool is not really "heated" - it was way too cold to use it in January, they should either not advertise it as being heated or (if it should be heated) cover it over night so it does not cool down that much. Would be great to work on these details.
The walk over to Monte along the Levada is very nice. We also walked downhill twice to have dinner at a very nice restaurant called "Planka", fantastic place with breathtaking views, serving high-quality organic beef, the very kind owner speaks English very well.

We visited Madeira from Christmas to New Year.
Easy access from the airport by taxi. Book the taxi in advance on the web, as it works out a little cheaper. Surprisingly, the cabbies (we found generally) were genuinely grateful for a tip, rather than expecting it as their due as so many do.
The hotel is high up on the hillside overlooking Funchal. Unless you're hyper-fit, you won't want to walk to/from town. You can get a cab each way for about €12, or use the hotel's own free shuttle service which runs about 2-3 times per day.
Excellent views of the town at night and of the sea. For us it was well worth paying a little extra for the sea view - beautiful sunsets!
The hotel is a spa/retreat and not just a hotel, and a great place to relax and de-stress. Everything was calm and peaceful, check-in/out easy and relaxed. Even the staff speak in a quiet, calm way, most speak excellent English. Bar and restaurant were both excellent and reasonably priced.
For those of you who really can't unplug, there is free wifi everywhere.
The hotel is Asian-inspired in appearance, rooms were clean, comfortable and well appointed.
For those of you who like walking, a levada passes right through the hotel grounds and and an easy hour's walk to the west are two spectacular cable car rides down to different parts of Funchal, €10 one way, €15 return. Longer walks are there for those who want to find them!
We're already planning our next visit there...

The hotel is high up in the hills of Funchal and like many reviews you'll read the staff and bungalow are worthy of 5 stars. It's a hidden gem, the views are breathtaking and I recommend highly. To make this review truly useful I want to share three points that I wished I knew.

1. There's a free shuttle bus to Funchal town. The last bus from town is at 6.20pm so if you'd like to enjoy the town at night you will need to factor in taxis (€10-13 one way). It is very quiet at the hotel (during our off-peask stay) so I'd recommend exploring the town during the evening

2. If you do intend on dining at the hotel for the majority of your stay, consider the length of time you are staying. The food is exceptional but we were there for nine days and neither the breakfast or dinner menus changed, resulting in the food selection becoming tiring after a week

3. We travelled at the begining of January where the temperature was forecasted to be in the high teens, however it is more chilly in the mountains some days and most nights...pack a few warm items!

I hope this helps make your stay even more exceptional, however I feel even without this knowledge, if you choose Choupana Hills you will not regret it.

Room Tip: Ocean facing room had a magnificent view

This wonderful hotel is based on the top of a hill In Funchal, with a magnificient view of the town and the harbour. Our Bangalow was very close to nature, and the overall service was very Good. Friendly staff, great cuisine. Stayed there for the second time, after 4 years, and was glad to see the hotel In great shape!

Room Tip: Ask for a view of Funchal! Amazing!
