We stayed here for 4 days in Oct 2012. The hotel is lovely, very modern but with a warm and friendly feel. The service was brilliant, staff are really helpful and will go out of their way to help. The facilities are good, indoor pool, spa and sauna all lovely, although the grouting/tiles in the pool could do with a bit of a clean. Was a bit too cold to use outdoor pool but looked very inviting. Computer with internet is free, free wifi in the hotel but not in the bungalows which was a pity but not the end of the world. Lovely location looking down on funchal. There are shuttle buses from the hotel regularly throughout the day and night, only take 10 mins. My only criticism would be that the gardens could probably do with better upkeep and our bungalow with a 'garden view' only looked out on a bate bit of dry land. Still had the view of the sea though. The bungalows are beautiful and cleaned daily. Free mini bar was also a nice touch. Would definitely go back one day. Perfect relaxing break.

This April my fiance and I were looking for a relaxing quiet holiday while still being able to enjoy the attractions of Funchal.

On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by the incredibly friendly and informative reception staff. Due to an error on our part we arrived at the hotel quite early and had not told the resort we would be doing so. They kindly allowed us the use of another room to rest in after our journey while ours was being prepared.

The resort itself is beautiful, set up in the mountains overlooking Funchal with the smell of wild flowers and eucalyptus in the air creating a very relaxed atmosphere. Although the resort is in the mountains (there is an excellent walking path running through the resort across to the high up botanical gardens) it is not difficult to visit Funchal and surrounding areas. The hotel shuttle service was very good and since it was not busy they were happy to collect and drop off at different times/locations than on their regular timetable.

We stayed in a sea view room which had an amazing view of Funchal and the bay, lighting up beautifully at night (through the giant window wall and private balcony). The room was well layed out and clean with an excellent bathtub and shower. We spent a lot of time relaxing in the room and on the balcony and ordered a good deal of room service.

The thing that stands out the most about our time there was the effort put in by the staff to ensure our stay was fantastic. Prior to our visit to Madeira we had informed the resort that we were vegan. We were told that this was fine and that they would be able to cater for us. On arrival I met with the head chef who had been experimenting with his own vegan dishes and even had a go making his own tofu! Together we decided on a range of vegan options which he took away to create a "Vegan Special Menu". From this we ordered room service or dinner at the restaurant with no trouble whatsoever as it seemed all the staff were made aware of this menu.

tl;dr: If you are looking for some relaxation and want great personal service we highly recommend Choupana Hills Resort!

Lovely food and friendly, efficient staff. Just what we needed after such a hectic wedding planning period. It was calm, quiet, and not many children. I loved the serenity I felt when I was there. Took advantage of the spa treatments. They were very expensive but we splurged since it was our honeymoon. Will return!

We stayed 9 days in choupana hills and enjoyed it fully. The view, when there are no clouds, is awesome, the bungalows are really comfortabele and nice decorated. Room has minibar with first filling free, a nespresso machine and a safeand wooden sun chairs on the balcony. The roomservice is fantastic and not expensive. We enjoyed some very nice dinners on our balcony. It was servered in a large picknickbasket and complete with tableclothing. Restaurant is very good and all the personal in the hotel was so kind and helpfull. The wellnessfacilitiies (pool, sauna and steambath) were good but not high standard. The garden must have been once very special, but has lacked good care for some time.The hotel is 600 high on the hill and because of that we were half of our stay in the clouds (what can also be very special). There is a shuttle service to town, but you need to book it in time else it is full. But you can also take the bus that stops next to the hotel. However we found it sometimes too much to take the bus too town 600 down hill. So if you do not care beeing a little far from town and sometimes in the clouds, this is a great hotel. About the price... In sept we payed 89 per night which was absolutely worth.
