The Quinta do Monte hotel is in the village of Monte set on the hillside with stunning views over the exotic gardens to Funchal and the harbour 650m below. The temperature is cooler here than in Funchal, but that could be an advantage later in the year.
Public transport into Funchal is excellent.
The buses between Funchal and Monte (nos. 20 and 21) run every 20 mins or so - the hotel will give you a timetable. It is a lovely walk from the hotel, up and round the church and down through Monte Gardens (in our opinion the nicest gardens on the island - and free!) to the bus stop (10mins). They run until about midnight.
Alternatively, from Babosas every hour, (also €1.30). From the hotel you get to the bus stop at Babosa (number 22) through the hotel garden, past the cable car station - only about a five minute walk.
The bus drivers can be a bit surly (but that's part of their game!) and drive as if posessed. The system is easy, enter from the front, buy your ticket from the driver, punch it in the machine next to him, exit from the back. Watch out for the Germans - you can que for 10 minutes and along they come and push in at the front when the bus arrives!
The views from the Monte cable car are spectacular. €12.50 per person return (this is a reduced price from hotel reception). It closes at 6pm.
Taxi prices: Fix the price before you get in, should be around €12.50 one way to or from Funchal.
The tropical gardens (€10) are in Monte next to the cable car station, and shouldn't be missed allow at least 3 hours. The botanical gardens (bus 31 from Funchal centre) is also worth a couple of hours at €3.
The organised tours around the island are recommended - make sure its by mini bus not coach, some of the roads are a little narrow and very windey..
The Quinta do Monte is a lovely hotel, in an old colonial style, the staff are very helpful if a little reserved you just need to speak to them...
Breakfast is excellent, self service buffet served from 7.30am to 10.30am, with a wide choice: fruit juices, cereals, meats, cheeses, yoghurts, cake, several fresh fruit salads, numerous types of bread (the walnut bread is yummy) champagne, tea and coffee. If you want a cooked breakfast you do need to ask, the waiters don't seem to think to offer, but happily oblige if you do.
The main part of restaurant is in a conservatory and set out so most tables have a view of the gardens and Funchal, however this does make it rather anti social, and intimidating. I can understand some people feeling rather uncomfortable, the accoustics are terrible so everybody whispers!
There is an excellent snack menu available all day and evening, although the restaurant menu is a bit limited. The hotel´s prices are higher than elsewhere. There is a nice cafe under the cable car station together with a gift shop, I can recommend them for afternoon tea and cakes (also yummy), and about 25% cheaper than the hotel.
There are a couple of locals bars and an excellent upstairs bistro (Belamonte) between the hotel driveway and the wicker toboggan run, which came recommended by the locals.
The swimming pool (indoor) is lovely (unfortunately the jacuzzi did not work nor did the turkish baths). The gym had good equipment, some of which didn't work or we just didn't know how to operate it - and it was unattended (great)...
Eating in Funchal, we liked the old town, just to the east of the cable car station. Our favourite was the Tapassol, 62 rua d.carlos i. There is a comprehensive menu, the waiters had it just right, and most importantly for us the downstairs part of the restaurant was no smoking. The food was good as was the wine, the service was faultless and reasonably priced.
We thoroughly recommend the Quinta do Monte, it may come across as a little stuffy (as do some of the guests) but just relax and then they do.
