Was it Divine Intervention or a Happy Accident that took us to Quinta da Bela Vista when another hotel found it had overbooked us? I prefer to think it was the first possibility, so closely did this beautiful hotel match our cherished hopes of a tranquil holiday among friendly and caring people.

If it's an all action, fever-pitched, high octane adventure holiday you are looking for, don't come here! If it's a stress free rest in an oasis of grace, taste and caring hospitality, then look no further!

There is so much one can praise agout this Quinta - lovely staff, quiet location, beautiful manorial buildings, botanical gardens, exquisite food: but a single incident sums it up perfectly for us. One evening the hotel laid on a "typical Madeiran buffet supper" and out hearts were warmed at the sight of one of the restaurant waiters taking an old lady gently by the arm and escorting her to and from the buffet tables with an old-world charm and courtesy that bought a tear to our eyes. Who will do that for us when we are old?

We were very impressed by the friendliness of the staff and their help at all times. Nothing was too much trouble. We arrived late and hungry and they immediately opened the main dining room and offered us a choice of soup, and looked after us. The buildings are scattered among lovely tropical gardens and there is an air of peace and tranquillity about the place. The hotel is situated on a hillside, and from the large swimming pool, you can sit at tables on a patio eating a light lunch and admiring the wonderful view of the whole bay of Funchal below. The courtesy bus runs frequently in the daytime, and there is a convenient bus from the town that stops near the hotel for evenings. It is not suitable for noisy children. The public rooms are filled with beautiful antique furniture, but one still has free access to a computer in the library. We would highly recommend it for a relaxing and cosseted existence.

The hotel is situated in beautiful sub-tropical gardens above Funchal. Consequently there are wonderful vistas from the gardens and the swimming pool bar. The hotel is beautifully maintained with a very high standard of friendly service and cuisine. The hotel is beautifully furnished. We were made to feel at home as soon as we were met at the front door of the hotel by the staff. Our room was upgraded at no extra charge. The two restaurants are superb. A free shuttle bus service operates throughout weekdays to the sea front of Funchal and is very prompt. There is an excellent tennis court and gym. Such a pity that the no smoking law operated throughout Ireland does not operate in Madeira. The sooner the better !

It must be difficult to improve on such wonderful service, but they do.
We have visited twice now. Each time excellent. Nothing too much trouble. Come to Quinta da Bela Vista to relax & everone concerned with your stay, makes sure that you do.
My wife & I have visited each year with our elderly parents, the weather is warm & mild, the staff so kind & thoughtful. Our parents can really relax & enjoy themselves.
Incidentally we have booked again this year for the end of Dec & the New Year. The garden terrace must be the best view of one of the worlds largest Firework Display & it is in Funchal.

We went to the Bela Vista on the recommendation of friends so we knew that it would be in a quiet situation, which was one of our main concerns. But what we didn't realise was how old-fashioned - in the best sense of the word - it would be. How many hotels these days take your luggage to your room, how many have employees who remember the names of their guests and how many have elegant lounges full of antiques? The beds were turned down each night, the towels were large and fluffy (and changed each day without any conscience-pricking suggestion that we could save water by keeping the same towels for several days) and were always warm from the heated towel rail.

The food was excellent and the waiters attentive and friendly without being unctuous.

The hotel is a ten to fifteen minute (4 - 5 euros) taxi ride from Funchal and there is a also courtesy bus several times a day. Madeira is a glorious island but the town of Funchal is not one of the jewels in its crown and the Quinta da Bela Vista is far enough away to give you clean air and quiet space to breathe it.
