“This Hotel really does give excellent service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

The hotel cannot be faulted for accommodation, but try and get a balcony if you can, which will enable you to enjoy the views. The food is very well prepared and presented in the restaurant in the old house, and adjoins a relaxing sitting room and a pleasant library. All the staff were pleasant, and very helpful. The gardens give a feeling of peace and tranquillity. The hotel courtesy minibus will take you to the harbour and back, but there are frequent low cost buses and taxis if you prefer getting nearer to the many facilities such as shops or bars and restaurants. Although my wife left her mobile phone behind, Fernando - the Head Receptionist, posted it back to UK arriving within 3 days at no extra cost.Yet another example of the excellent service which you don't always get elsewhere.

We've just returned from a week at Quinta da Bela Vista and it was an excellent choice.

It was out first visit to Madiera and we chose the hotel based upon previous TripAdvisor reviews. We were aware that the hotel is outside of the town, at the top of a steep hill, however there is a frequent courtesy bus and taxis are approx €7 from the centre.

From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, the fantastic staff made sure our visit was a good one. On arrival we were given a twin room due to a mix up with the booking, however after 30 mins we were in a double. The room was very spacious with two comfortable chairs overlooking the gardens, plus the balcony gave us a great view.

Breakfast was always plentiful and the food was of a high quality. The staff in the restaurant were excellent and very attentive to diners needs. There was a great choice at breakfast that was frequently changed to give variation unlike other hotels.

There were several elderly patrons staying in the hotel and I was impressed with the patience, care and concern shown by all the staff. It was nice to see the staff ensuring they all had a good time during their stay.

We had dinner several times in the Old House within the grounds and both times we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Service was exceptional, as was the quality of the food.

The grounds of the hotel were well kept and the pool area was clean, tidy and also well maintained. The small gym was clean and contained enough equipment.

The reception staff were very understanding and patient with all our requests, even suggesting good places to walk to see more of Funchal.

Overall we were really happy with our stay at Quinta da Bela Vista and can highly recommend it. We'll definately be returning in the future.

My husband and I spent six days at Quinta Da Bela Vista.
We had a great time there, but what spoild our vacation was the fact that our originally booked room did not meet our expectations and that is to say the least, though we were promised to get a " nice room with the garden view". The room had two seperated beds with no posibility to get them together though we had asked for a double bed. The overall look of the room is dated and the bathroom and toilets had a very bed smell. When we asked for another room with the same price,we were answered by Carla, the receptionist ,that they had no other room and the only option left was upgrading the room to a superior, which cost us extra 200 Euro!. The head receptionist did not even try to get us even a small reduction, what left us with a bitter taste.

However, I would like to acknowledge the entire staff at the dining room and restaurant, especially the man in charge who went out of his way to meet our requests and Paula, the receptionist as well, who did everything she could to make us feel at home. She is a remarkable woman.

I should acknowledge the breakfast buffet which was abundant and the food was excellent

If you are looking for peace and tranquility, the hotel is just the right place for you. Otherwise, look for a hotel at the Lido, where most of the hotels are located.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the upper floors with a balcony (if you can afford it) at the central building whe...

A delightful quiet location about 3 km from centre of Funchal. Courtesy bus service backed up with plenty of taxis which are inexpensive. Lovely wooded gardens and attractive heated pool with snack area looking on to the town.
Booked half board for 3 nights and the cuisine was varied and to a high standard. It was served in a fine old mansion house with classic furnishings which was very close to the hotel.
The staff throughout were charming, friendly and most helpful. A winner! John G

We have just had a wonderful week at this hotel out of town but perfect location away from the hustle and bustle of Funchal we had a Deluxe room which was large with a balcony and a view of the gardens the staff were so friendly and made us feel welcome from the start special thanks to Frederico and Paula on reception also to Osmar who went that little bit further to make our stay perfect. We can highly recommend the Quninta and would stay here again.

We stayed here for a week at the beginning of May. I can only echo other reviewers - this is an truly excellent hotel. The reception staff were pleasant and really helpful - for example arranging car hire at short notice, getting a taxi for a half day tour, and even getting my walking pole mended ! We stayed half board, and although the five course menu was fixed with no choices, the food was really high quality every night. The wine list was all Portuguese, and had some very good wines - the advice of the wine waiters was helpful.

The hotel is not in the main hotel area, quite high up a hill overlooking Funchal. The walk to town takes about 40 minutes. Turn right out of the hotel gates (not the way the minibus goes) and basically keep walking downhill all the wayl, It's pleasant quiet little backstreets until you get to the commercial and shopping areas.

A couple of points could be room for improvement - there was a jacuzzi and a sauna, but they only operated until 6pm, and needed to be be booked at least an hour in advance. I'm a bit more spontaneous than that, so we never used them ! Also, the mini-bus service didn't run Sat afternoon or Sunday.

WiFi was free, but reception patchy. There is a lounge on the first floor of the main building with excellent reception if the signal in your room is a bit weak.

Those are minor quibbles - overall, we would recommend the hotel very highly.

We very much liked Funchal and the area. A couple of recommendations in case they help anyone else plan their visit:

a) the Tropical Gardens at Monte are definitely worth a visit. A surprise was an exhibition of natural gemstones as they had been mined - Amethyst Geodes etc etc. If you are interested in crystals, a fascinating place
b) hiring a taxi for half a day. Not too expensive ( 60 to 70 Euros) and gives you freedom you don't get in a tour. For example, we got him to drop us off at the viewpoint over the Nuns Valley, and then walked down the path to the bottom where he picked us up. It took about 90 minutes for the descent, which was steep but with spectacular scenery all the way down.
c) The Market Hall in Funchal. Always interesting to look around, but the surprise was the outdoor roof-top cafe on the top level. They do excellent sandwiches, and was a great spot for lunch.

We would definitely like to return.

If you want to be away from town but be in an old-fashioned hotel with friendly helpful staff, this is the place for you. The hotel stands in beautiful gardens with a lovely pool area. Dinner is taken in The Old House, where service & food are excellent. We stayed in an annexe, the room overlooked the garden and although the pebbled pathways may be difficult for people with limited mobility, we were enchanted. My only (very minor) complaint is that the courtesy bus runs rather infrequently and not at all on Sundays so unless you are prepared to take taxis or use the local buses (which we did & which were to be found at the end of the road), you are too far away from the town for a stroll along the marina.

Room Tip: Those with mobility problems should request a room in the main building.
