“Beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

We have just returned from a wonderful stay at this hotel. Its setting is stunning, set above Funchal in beautiful gardens. Our room with balcony looked across the gardens to Funchal itself, which was just magical at night with all the lights twinkling in the distance. The hotel was furnished beautifully, and we had a very comfortable room. The staff were very friendly, and the level of service was exceptional.
The hotel provided a courtesy bus into Funchal several times a day, but if the timing did not suit, a taxi ride in the evening was only 6-7 euros.
We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis, which enabled us to explore other places to eat in the evening. We did dine in at the hotel on our first night, and ate al fresco, surrounded by the lovely gardens. The food was delicious and beautifully presented.
We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, and would definitely make a return visit.

It was difficult to believe that we could be in such a tranquil setting yet so close to Funchal centre. The hotel provided a free minibus service into town, though if you wanted to go at a different time, the taxi ride was only around £6 - a small price to pay for such a wonderful, privileged, location.
The room was very good; quality fittings, solid walls, great aspect. And the hotel gardens were beautiful, with some great specimens of trees and shrubs. The a la carte restaurant was top quality, with a very good wine list too. I could go on about the breakfasts, the pool, other facilities , but suffice to say that everything on offer was top notch, and the staff could not have been more helpful.

The Quinta da Bela Vista is a serene and beautiful place. Near enough to Funchal if you want to do the 'city' things but far enough away to be peaceful. A trip to town in a taxi costs between 7 and 10 Euros although the courtesy bus has frequent trips too. The gardens are tranquil and provide a shady and relaxing place to wander. The rooms are spotless and comfortable. All the staff were efficient, helpful and always smiling. We could not fault them. We were on holiday with Headwater so did a lot of walking trips. The island is a magical place with tiny villages worth exploring and the levadas are a joy, if sometimes scary, places to walk. The hotel is somewhere that we would love to revisit and hopefully we will. A lot of the guests go back year after year.

If you want a peaceful, pampered holiday we would not hesitate to recommend Quinta da Bela Vista. The situation of the old manor house and its up-to-date facilities, high above the town of Funchal is ideally situated and the views of sea and town are stunning. The staff could not be more friendly, helpful and attentive. The food is expertly cooked and presented and the antique furnishings in the public rooms are a sight to behold. Sitting outside in the beautiful gardens for an evening meal on a balmy evening, is a memory which will stay with us for a long time to come.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a sea view.

My husband and I spent 14 nights at the Quinta da Bela Vista from the 7th through 21st September. The service was first class at all times even to the courtesy bus which was provided to the town. The diligence and efficiency of the staff made our holiday, they were friendly and some had worked there for many years, a recommendation in itself. The rooms were spacious and spotless, sheets and towels were changed daily and nothing was too much trouble. The public rooms were immaculate and full of character each lending to the quality of the truly country house feel. It is not a "lively" hotel in the evening, it is the time to settle down to a good book or a glass of Madeira on the patio overlooking Funchal. If you are looking for nightlife this is not this type of hotel. It is a quiet hotel with spectacular gardens which was the attraction for us. . Our stay was memorable to the highest degree and we feel sure we will return in the near future.

Room Tip: A balcony ovelooking the garden

Estalagem means Manor House and this beautiful Quinta is a former British residence in the traditional "quinta estalagem" style. It is redolent of an English country house of the 18th-19th century. Packed with antique furniture, pottery, porcelain and art it is a veritable treasure trove in many of the public rooms.
5* it is rated and 5* it deserves. The staff were cheerful, courteous and deferential to a fault, nothing was too much trouble. Rooms were spacious, immaculate furnished, sometimes simply but that all emcompassed the character of this former family home.

Food, both Table d`Hote and a la carte` we excellent and beautifully presented. We dined al fresco as the weather was perfect. Buffet breakfast pretty standard stuff but just ask for any special requirements.

If you want evening entertainment then look elsewhere, there is just a pianist in the evenings because this is a tranquil place. Go to the other big hotels if you want that sort of noise.

Yes , it is out of the town of Funchal but views over the town and bay are lovely. There is a complimentary mini-bus throughout most of the day but the hotel`s quite location amongst lovely gardens was an attraction for us.

All in all the place is full of character and elegance, the detractors just don`t get it. Madeira is a
sophisticated garden jewel in the Atlantic, full of history and character. Quinta da Bela Vista is part of that and long may it so remain.

Room Tip: All rooms are good but upgrade to Deluxe Garden View if you can for more space and peaceful outlook...

My wife and I spent 7 days at the Quinta da Bela Vista from 3 through 10 September. This hotel is situated in lovely and well maintained gardens a few milesd above Funchal and the hotel helpfully provide transportation to and from the town.

Our accomodation was a de luxe room and this was perfect for our needs.

The staff in all areas of the hotel are efficient, helpful and very courteous and this is a tribute to both the staff and hotel management.

Our only gripe concerns our evening meals. We paid a not inexpensive half board supplement but half board guests are presented with a fixed menu with no choice. There was an a la carte option available but at an additional cost. This was unexpected in a 5 star hotel.

For those who prefer a lively hotel the Da Bela Vista would not be suitable but it would be a good choice for those who are seeking rest and relaxation in a decent hotel.

Room Tip: People who have mobility difficulties should check out the location of their room carefully.
