Views were amazing but gets very busy where the bigger cruise ships are in port. I think this is a must if you are visiting Madeira
We were lucky enough to travel very early in the day and had a car to ourselves. Monte was fairly quiet when we arrived and we did the VERY steep Monte to Terreiro da Luta walk. Worth it for the views but hard on the knees!

Take a trip on the cable car from Funchal promenade 10 euro one way or 15 return to see the city of Funchal unfold below you to the top at Monte where you can take the traditional toboggan ride back to Funchal or once you have seen the sights at Monte take a short walk to the Barossa Cable car to the well renowned Funchal Tropical Gardens if you are feeling fit a good gentle walk down to Funchal is well within your limitations otherwise a cab or the regular bus service.
I'd recommend the cable car to Monte for a half a day trip. The views from the car are spectacular as are the ones from the top. You may want to take the cable car up and go down via the toboggan ride. Quite expensive but fun.
