“Excellent choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

Hotel Girassol is situated on Estrada Monumental - the main street of Funchal. From this hotel it's easy to reach the city center and also the start a trip to the rest of the island. It is surrounded by restaurants, pubs and it is close to the ocean.

Very dissapointed at the 4 star hotel in Maderia provided by the travel department, only a basic 3 star hotel ,poor selection of food for breakfast, not even fresh fruit but tinned, did't have half board, instead used the lovely resturant directly across the road, excellent selection and service great. The only good thing with the hotel was we had a stting room, very dated in style compared to the other 4 star hotels in the area.Trips provided by the windsor group( acting on behalfof the travel department) more expensive than the other trips available by the other agents in the area, just walk outside and acoss the road other agents selling same trips much cheaper.
Asked for a massage and had to use the facilities down in the pool area, unclean and so unsecure and dated, only had a fold up bed in a cold changing room. The only good thing was the Roberto the tour guide excellent and witty.

We have just returned from another most enjoyable holiday at the Girassol in Funchal. The hotel is clean and very comfortable. The bed linen was changed every day and the maids were polite and courteous. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, in particular the waiters, most of whom recognised us from previous visits. The food was of the highest quality and there was plenty of choice. Many congratulations must go to the chef and all his team.

We have just spent another amazing week at Hotel Girassol. As return visitors we had fresh fruit in our suit and we had a brilliant suit overlooking the see. Most of the staff were the same as last year and were friendly and helpful. It was nice to be recognised. Great breakfast, we ate at the poolside bar most days which was really good and great value for money.we are planning for next year already and we are going for two weeks this time. Thanks Hotel Girassol.

Room Tip: Great value for money

Stayed at the Girassol last week of March. Hotel is clean and tidy, staff very friendly, rooms clean and tidy. Lined changed every other day. The hotel is a little dated and could do with an update, as it is more 80's than 2012. The pool was very quiet as it was very windy around the pool, which is on the 1st floor. the piano bar was barely used as it was closed most of the time, but would have been a great place to sit and relax after dinner, with a drink. The food was mediocre, but did improve as the week went on. There was plenty of choice for breakfast, but evening meals were a bit choiceless, normally a meat dish or a fish dish for mains. Good choice for starter and dessert though. The Captains bar was a little drab looking, but the 2 barmen were great and worked quickly and efficiently all night.

Spent a week here in March 2013.In the hotel area of the city. Good central location - 20 minute walk into city centre. Hop-on hop-off bus nearby. Lots of restaurants in close vicinity. Lovely promenade walk nearby, going all the way to Camera des Lobos fishing village. Room facing the sea-front was clean and spacious, has a balcony and got lovely sunshine. Bathroom spotless. Surprised for 4 start that a kettle or tea/coffee in room was extra daily charge. Reception staff courteous and spacious seating around ground floor area, including library. Bar was very quiet - TV only - could do with sprucing up - staff there pleasant. WI-Fi available on first floor cafe area only but worked well. Disappointed with pool area - always too cold to swim in and staff not interested in rectifying this. Also two miniscule lifts - both extremely slow. Breakfasts were varied well stocked choices. Dinner average. Entertainment at dinner (piano bar & local dancers ) was never advertised, so missed out on same.

Stayed in this hotel in March 2013 as clients of The Travel Department. The reception area is spacious and functional, with good relaxing areas nearby and a wide variety of library books available. The internet is free but can only be used on the ground and first floor, with very slow speeds so a lot of patience is required. The two lifts are small and very slow, There are damp smells outside the lift areas particularly on the upper floors which give a bad impression. we were lucky to have a west facing, pool view room, with sunshine from midday onwards and a nice view of the sea in the distance. The rooms were very spacious, with large sitting room area and wide screen TV, showing lots of english channels as well as a hollywood film channel. Bathroom was spotless and the rooms very clean. The girls in charge of the bedrooms did an immaculate job every day. The towels are darned and repaired and for a 4-star hotel, they should be discarded when they get to such a state of disrepair. Mattress in bedroom suited me because it was firm. This will not suit if you like a soft mattress. Breakfast had a good selection of fresh fruits, breads, hot and cold meats. The cheese and cold meats were of the processed variety. The toaster worked, although slowly. The staff are tourist weary and would take a lot of work to get a smile of out them. In contrast, the reception staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The hop-on/off bus stop is nearby and well worth using for exploring Funchal.

Room Tip: Choose a high floor and face west over the pool area.
