“What a great memory I have of Hotel Girassol.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We booked into this hotel Easter Sunday 8th April 2012 for 1 week. Thank you to the travel department for choosing such a fabulous hotel. It has left wonderful memories. We enjoyed the food -what a great selection of desserts ! The staff were so professional, helpful and friendly. We loved the lounge and balcony.Everything was so clean and tidy. The only setback was that the bed was very hard and I mean very hard. We enjoyed several walks into Funchal and along by the seafront. We also enjoyed sightseeing on Maderia Island. It was important to my husband and I to be able to come back such a nice homely hotel.

Room Tip: Check out quality of bed

I did not used to write reviews but this time I decided to do so to prevent others from Hotel Girassol. Unfortunately we were totally misled by positive online reviews and decided to stay here. At least, I can help others to choose better.

The hotel is definitely not up to 4-star standard. The overall mood of this hotel resembled us to trade union's hotels from 80s, 70s in Hungary. Furniture, design looked dusty and in some cases even rotting like the lower part of our bathroom door!! There was a terrible smell of blight or whatever in lobbies and even at our room.
I cannot say anything positive about breakfast neither. When comparing the standard to relevant Hungarian hotels, we can say that the choice, the variety and the quality of food here is somewhere between 2 and 3 stars.
Internet was fast but it was not for free! It was a bit of a shock in a 4 starred hotel.

This is not a value for money hotel either comparing room prices to other Funchal 4 star hotels.

A big thankyou to all staff for making our stay at the hotel so pleasant .We have just spent another week at this hotel, it is great value for money. the food is good, and the lunch you can buy at the pool side is very reasonably priced with a wide variety of choices plus the sweets are a must to try . The staff are fantastic and I cannot praise them enough, especially the maid service ,with clean linen and daily supply of fresh towels, soap, shampoo and bath foam. All the bar staff at the pool side are friendly and cheerful , and the pool attendant Gomes is a lovely man always smiling and busy making sure everyone is happy, and he keeps the pool area clean and tidy, If you are a returning customer you get a fidelity card which offers discounts on food and beverages ( not happy hour) a free upgrade if available , a basket of fruit in your room on arrival and much more . .the hotel is near all the local shops and restaurants and only about a twenty minute walk into Funchal itself . This is not a hotel for young couples or young people with young children .It is, I would say for the more mature adults who are wanting a restful quiet holiday. The only negative thing we found which we have rarley come across before on our six visits were the many smokers lighting up when we were eating, as this is no longer allowed in the UK it was off putting to say the least . We overcame this by eating our lunch at the pool side. Madeira is a beautiful island but, do remember to take mosquito repellent as the only place you can purchase this is at the pharmacy and the nearest one is a good 20-25 minute walk away .

Stayed at this hotel for three weeks from 24/09/2012 until 15/10/2012 two weeks on half board and the third week free on bed and breakfast with Mercury Direct. We had a fantastic three weeks of good weather, except for two days of rain which soon cleared.
The hotel was very welcoming and the suite we had on the 9th floor was very comfortable with a separate lounge and flat screen tv. A good choice of english channels to view if the weather is not so good. We had a mini fridge which was very handy. The room was cleaned every day with clean towels and a regular change of sheets. The resturant food was very good, with hot plates and hot food which is very important to me. The waiters were friendly and very attentative. It had an old fashioned feel about the hotel, with old fashioned values, which is rarely seen these days and I enjoyed been looked after by the polite staff. The hotel and Maderia had a colonial feel and it was very safe and crime free.
Windsor Travel are on site, they are the agent for Mercury direct and they were very accommodating. We had no problems and every thing went like clock work with the pick up times.
The staff around the pool were very good and couldn't do enough for you, fetching umbrellas and providing drinks as and when required. Snacks were available at the pool side and there was a lovely little garden with many flowers and shrubs. There is a gym at the hotel which is in the basement near the pool area.
Maderia is very clean and the people polite. The promenade is flat but there are many hilly areas to negotiate. There is a lovely walk to the next village - Camara de Lobos with places to stop for a drink, flat for most of the walk but there are some steps, a tunnel and steep areas to contend with but when you get to the village it is very rural and pretty. Food is reasonably priced to eat out and there are many restaurants to choose from in the old town, town centre, or the promenade area just outside the town.
The scenery is dramatic especially in the West side of Funchal and is certainly worth a trip to see the differences. I would love to return especially at christmas, we were told by other visitors, it is a lovely time to visit Maderia. They told us the christmas lights and fireworks are spectacular.
Seeing all the lovely flowers and plants in Maderia was something special, to see poinsetta growing outdoors just appearing at this time of year (October onwards) is delightful.
I was told there is no best time to visit Maderia, the flowers grow all year round and the amount of banana's, oranges, limes, pomegranates and other fruits I have never seen before growing in Maderia is a pleasure to see, they certainly taste better with the sun ripening them.
I had a lovely relaxing holiday with my husband in Maderia and at the Girassol hotel and would certainly return.

Room Tip: Rooms with a pool view but Most rooms have good views. Rooms at the back of the hotel have views of...

I had read previous reviews and expected a poor supply of food, but that was not true. The breakfast was excellent plenty of variety. The dinner was very good and a good variety of meal, fish potatoes and vegetables which were fresh not frozen as previous reviews stated. There deserts were to die for. Having to have a special diet myself they catered for my needs with great care and attention. The service was excellent. The bedrooms were spotless and we paid to for an up graded when booking and got an a/c room it was worth it. The only thing that would enhance your stay is if the hotel might put sun loungers on the baloney.

My wife and I stayed for a week at this hotel on the 7th floor. No complaints about the room - it was hotter than we expected during the night (24-28 degrees!) and we knew there was no a/c. The hotel supplied pedestal fan was essential! We had paid for a room upgrade on booking and found ourselves with a spacious bedroom, small dressing area and very large sitting room with comfortable sofa and two armchairs. Our balcony was large, with excellent views, marred only by the obtrusive noise from the road below. The bathroom had been recently refurbished with new tiles and fittings. The room was kept very clean throughout our stay.

All the staff were very friendly and helpful throughout. The barman was great in serving drinks in the "Captain's Bar", although the decor in there is very dark and dingy and could do with brightening up. We used the poolside bar several times and the service was 1st class, both for food and drink.

Breakfast was buffet style and OK; highlight was the great selection of gorgeous fresh breads.Lowlight was the "English" style cooked food. I had it once and didn't bother again; bacon was undercooked and sausages were "Frankfurter" style.

Evening meal was fine; buffet, nothing too fancy, selection of 2 or 3 main courses, always one fish and one meat. Vegetables were surprisingly well cooked (by which I mean not overcooked) for a buffet. Buffet style desserts were very good. Everything enjoyable to eat, but not award winning. Winelist was fine, with lots of bottles reasonably priced (for a hotel) at under 15 Euros. There are numerous excellent eating and drinking places around the hotle, so no problem if you are B&B. There are also plenty of shops within a few minutes wlak, including a couple of supermarkets.

Location: we walked into Funchal several times, it's about 20 minutes, downhill on the way in, about 25 minutes uphill on the way back!. The hotel is also right at the start of the promenade walk to the West, which was another popular stroll for us after dinner. Also did it during the day and stopped off for drinks and snacks at the many bars along the route.

Would we be happy to stay here again? There are lots on good hotels in the vicinity but, on balance we'd ceratinly look at staying here again as this is a smaller, more intimate hotel with more character than some modern hotel "boxes".

Room Tip: Choose a room as high up as possible - 11th floor if you can. Best views are from the south side, bu...
