A view from the top
Old-world charm, flawless service and excellent food–breakfast, lunch and dinner–in a bucolic, other-worldly setting made our week-long stay at Casa Velha one of our most redemptive holiday weeks in many years. The hotel staff was exceptionally bright, friendly and attentive without the unctuous servitude that often mars the best hotel personnel. Of note was the head of staff, an extremely sharp, helpful and funny fellow who quickly made us feel as though we were members of an extended family.
In so many ways, Case Velha was pure escape. A stately, turn-of-the century mansion in an exotic garden, the hotel was situated in a lush garden of thick unfamiliar-looking trees (I'm no botanist), vegetation and brightly feathered birds. Far from the crowds of the water-front hotels, we felt comfortably isolated yet we were only minutes from those same beaches. Our room was large, with high ceilings and windows facing a large flower-lined lawn, where guests relaxed around umbrella-laden tables. Just beyond the hotel grounds were the rolling hills of the Palheiro Golf Club, with spectacular views of the sea.
On the other side of the hotel were a swimming pool, where lunch could be ordered, and an adjoining tennis court. Although not a large pool, it was long enough for me to do my morning laps. Great to have a thick, fresh towel given available after every plunge. We didn’t rent an automobile because we were able to arrange trips in and out of Funchal through the hotel’s bus shuttle. However, if you are looking for flexibility and want to visit more of this geologically fascinating island, a car rental is a must.
