“A First in Madeira!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

This was our first time in Madeira. We were there for 7 days B&B at this lovely modern hotel. The location is the best, sea views, close to Funchal town center (10 minute walk), and just 5 minute walk away from the best restaurants on the island. The staff are very friendly, courteous and helpful. The reception staff saved us money when we could not decide which tour to go on. The restaurant staff were extremely helpful. There was great music in the evenings, dance or listen in the bar. The bus terminus and cable car is just 5 mins away. Highly recommend Porto Santa Maria to everyone and we will definitely stay there on our return. It is the First and the best!

Room Tip: Sea views are worth it, especially 1st and 2nd floors.

We first stayed at this hotel in May 2012, and were looking forward to returning. We were not disappointed - same lovely hotel, same high standard of service, and largely the same friendly staff to look after us. Although we like to try local restaurants when on holiday (and there are so many to choose from within a matter of yards of the hotel), this time we dined more in the hotel than outside. The food is so good why go anywhere else? There are a large number of guests who return to the Porto Santa Maria year after year, and it is no surprise why they do. We will certainly return again.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a sea view. Almost all rooms seem to have a good view of the sea, but mainly get t...

Beautiful modern hotel situated on the seafront and adjacent to the old town. Restaurants and bars galore within walking distance. The staff were superb and very friendly and couldn't do enough to make your stay memorable. Food and drink in the hotel were excellent. Also, as an added bonus, we were given 10€ per day allowance to spend in the bar due to major works being carried out in front of the hotel, but we never heard a thing.

This was our 2nd stay at this hotel. It's quality adults only accommodation with very friendly helpful staff.
It's on the edge of the old town with a wealth of bars and restaurants on the doorstep, on the sea front, close to the cable car and bus terminus, and only 10 mins walk to the centre of town. I don't think there's a better location.
We had a large room with a side view of the gardens which was cleaned daily. The bed was extremely comfortable! In the room was a kitchenette with a fridge, a 2 plate hob, utensils, pans and crockery: we only used it for a hot drink or to make sandwiches for our walks.
The bathroom had large bath sheets as well as 2 towels to take down to the pool, an over bath shower and a basic hair dryer. It was very clean.
The bar is a pleasant place to spend an evening - there was nightly musical entertainment which ended at 11:00 pm on the dot.
The restaurant is light and airy with plenty of space between the tables and the staff are very helpful. It overlooks the sea and it was a bit unnerving to look up at breakfast and see a cruise liner heading towards you just before it stops and reverses into the harbour. We were half board because we got a good deal from our tour operator. The buffet was probably worth what we paid for it but we wouldn't have paid the restaurant price. With the number of restaurants around we'll probably just do B&B next time. Breakfast was included in the room rate and we had a very good choice of food.
The grounds are very pleasant, both gardens and pool area. As of mid Feb 14 there is still essential municipal work in front of the hotel extending half way along the promenade. We weren't troubled by it, there wasn't much opportunity to sit outside in February and the management kept an eye on the times that the machines were operating. We were given €10 per room per night for the inconvenience which was much appreciated.
There's free wifi in the lobby but in your room it has to be paid for, as does the safe.

Lovely spot, watching ships coming and going, the works going on outside did not bother us.
Very clean rooms, and public areas, the breakfast was excellent, evening meal salads were great, but hot food did not vary very much.
We were celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary, and the hotel gave us a lovely bottle of wine and flowers, which we appreciated very much.
Overall, an excellent place to stay, they even gave guests a 70€ per room allowance for the week because of the work going on at the waterfront.

Room Tip: Room 225 was perfect for us.

In real terms this hotel can not be surpassed in Madeira, An ideal situation in the old town and in reach of most forms of transport. The food is excellent but a bit biased toward buffets which we hate, however they have an excellent "À la carte" menu. With so many wonderful restaurants in Madeira it is impossible to eat only at the hotel (5000 restaurants and eating places in Madeira).
The Hotel staff are the best and there is a wonderful relaxed atmosphere in the place. Loved the Captains Bar at night always some live music to tempt you on the dance floor or to just read and relax. Certainly we will be back. We could not find any negative points, perhaps only one the holiday went so quickly.

Room Tip: If you go for two weeks book half board for only one so you can enjoy the hotel food and the wonderf...

We stayed here in January having been to this hotel before about 10 years ago. We much prefer to be near the old town than in the hotel zone. It is our favourite location in Funchal as there are so many restaurants close by to try. The cable car is also just 5 minutes walk away. Having a small kitchenette was very useful just for a snack or drink. The food in the hotel restaurant was excellent and we were not disappointed.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the park and once or twice there were some people making a lot of noise at about...
