“Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

We stayed here half board for a week at the end of October. It was a wonderful place to stay. The location of the hotel is perfect for exploring Funchal. 2 minutes to the cable car, actually in the old town right by a super mix of cafés and restaurants.
The staff in the hotel were all so friendly and helpful. Great facilities, lovely bar, very warm indoor pool as well as an outdoor pool to help you cool off when sunbathing.
The 10 euros per day subsidy more than compensates for the inconvenience of the harbour work. Can't wait to go back once the harbour is complete. It'll be even better

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

We stayed at this hotel between 30th September and 14th October, our room was on the first floor, room 163. It did look over the building works but we were not really affected by the noise. The location in the old town is ideal, as there are plenty of restaurants and various types of shops.
It was lovely to see the cruise ships coming in and going out. They were nearly every day. Also there is a sun terrace on the third floor, so the cruise ships can be viewed from there.
The room was good with cooking facilities (two electric rings), cooking utensils, kettle, etc. On this occasion they only filled the tea and coffee ingredients on the first day, along with a bottle of water and a bowl of fruit. When we stayed there last year, we had water every day and also the fruit was replenished.
The breakfast was very good, plenty to choose from, i.e. cereals, cooked breakfast, croissants, cold meats, fruit, etc. Lina the guest relations person was excellent, nothing was too much trouble.
We only had bed and breakfast on this occasion, last year we had half board for seven nights. We decided this year that as there are so many local restaurants nearby we would dine out. On a few occasions we ate in the hotel, and it was mainly in the bar area. We tended to share a meal as they are quite big.
We tried the restaurant by the yellow forte on three occasions, very good. Also the Chinese near the hotel was very good.
The indoor and outdoor pools were warm, we used the indoor pool every day, along with the Jacuzzi. This year there is an outdoor Jacuzzi which was a nice surprise. There was no problems with the sunbeds as there were plenty.
The 10 Euros compensation per person per day for the building works was a good idea, at the end of our stay we did not owe anything. The first time we have spent less than being at home.
We will definitely stay there again, a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.
Thank you to all the staff and especially Lina.

we have just returned from a four day long weekend stay , it is on the sea front in the old town on the flat which is rare in madeira so good for anyone with mobility issues. we were given a free upgrade to a seaview room with a gated access to the patio pool area ( 1 step) the room was nicely appointed with a hob, kettle, crockery and fridge and sink for snacks which we didn't use. there is a small spar shop just around the corner between the restaurants on the road that runs behind the hotel. We booked a triple room and my daughter was pleased that it was a proper bed and not the usual sofa bed. There is extensive works being carried out on the sea defences along the front in funchal and directly in front of the hotel but it didn't affect our enjoyment of our stay . The hotel is giving 10 euros per person to spend in the hotel so we ate there one night and the food was very good but pricey compared to outside and the atmosphere a little sterile. We had the a la carte so can't comment on the buffet as we usually avoid them as i've seen too many people pick things up from buffets with their fingers then put them back over the years in the trade. The lunch offerings were a little disappointing everthing mostly comes with fries or wedges . I ordered a beef baguette and I've never seen it cut that thin you could see through it. There are so many great restaurants just 2 minutes walk away and much cheaper . We were stung the first day when we ordered 2 large beers and the bill was 9 euros then we noticed that people only seemed to order drinks from 6 to 7pm as it is happy hour. so we followed suit after that. the receptionists were very helpful with bus timetables and printing walks out of the coffee table book. The indoor pool and jacuzzi is a lovely bath temperature the outside one a little cool in october, although the weather was good for our stay. the new town centre is only 15 minutes walk away on the flat and the buses and cable car less than that. the cable car was expensive with a trip to the botanical gardens costing 87 euros for 3 of us. my daughter and husband went on the toboggan run we they enjoyed it was 30 euros for the 2 of them. the fort is right next door to the hotel and on the last evening we treated ourselves to an atmospheric meal on the battlements in the restaurant there a fine dining treat. we would defo return to the hotel . one tip the hotel has a deal with a taxi company of 29 euros to the airport cheaper than the one we got from the rank on the way out who charged 34.

Stayed many times and will do so again.
The staff are brilliant and everything at the hotel is perfect.
This year there are new sea defences being constructed but
did not affect our enjoyment.
Would highly recommend.

Firstly, we booked this hotel by accident, as we got confused by a number of similar names. However, this worked to our advantage as the hotel was truly excellent. Big airy room with a balcony which was kept spotless throughout our stay. We had one overlooking the park to the west on the second floor - the local homeless man was not a problem- and the trees meant that we could have a drink as the sun went down without being dazzled). The small fully equipped kitchenette was a surprise, and the full size fridge was a real bonus. Absolutely no criticism of staff or the establishment. Even though they were were recarpeting our floor and installing Wi-fi for the rooms, this was not a particular inconvenience. The works outside were a little noisy at times but were fascinating to watch and we collectively saved 280 euro off the bill between four of us as compensation. Breakfast buffet was very good and our one evening meal in the hotel was one of the best of our week in Madeira. Spa/sauna and pool clean and not too busy. Situation in the Old Town and on the flat was very helpful. We will return to Madeira after a most enjoyable week and will deliberately choose to stay in the Porto Santa Maria next time!

Have just returned from our second visit to this hotel and we were not disappointed. We had a sea view room which was kept spotlessly clean for us by smiling, friendly staff and the food and entertainment in the restaurant was excellent. Its situation makes it ideal for visiting the Old Town and the many small restaurants situated in the narrow cobbled streets, also just a short level stroll along the promenade into town. The sea defence works going on along the seafront didn't disturb us at all, in fact we enjoyed watching the progress being made and look forward to seeing it finished. We love this hotel and cant wait to visit it again. Many thanks.

We have stayed at Porto Santa Maria 4 times now and have always been very happy there. Our room was clean and well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. This includes a kitchenette with all that is needed to prepare a simple meal to enjoy on the balcony or in the room. The staff are lovely, helpful and willing to do their best to make the guests feel at home.
There is some noise at present from the works being undertaken on the seafront but we did not find this intrusive, indeed it made a point of interest with many clients watching the workmen and photo graphing their progress. The finished beach will be an asset to this hotel. It is one of the few hotels in Funchal which is on the seafront and on the level making getting out and about easy for even the less mobile.
The hotel give each guest E10 per day to compensate for any inconvenience caused by the works. This can be spent in the hotel or at their sister hotels in Funchal. We used some of ours at The Porto Mare on a delightful Dinner and Show Evening - a cabaret and meal which we really enjoyed.
The area around the hotel is teeming with bars and places to eat offering everything from a simple drink (try a Poncha but be careful 2 may be too many!) to a meal which rivals the best anywhere.
The hotel is near to the main public transport hub for the island and so getting out and about is easy once you understand the bus timetables but someone will always help. Make sure of the return bus times before you set out as some are infrequent.
We hope to return in the new year.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking the park to the west of the hotel. Local down and outs seem to gather there.
