“A comfortable hotel in a lovely part of Funchal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

We chose this hotel for its location - we didn't want to be at the Lido amongst all the big hotels, and we certainly made the right choice. Despite the works on the sea front, which we already knew about and were compensated by the hotel for, we had a lovely stay. The room was comfortable, the service good and the staff were really helpful. The spa was well worth a visit.

This part of Funchal is by far the nicest, we think. Last time we came we were a few years younger, and the strenuous walk uphill to our quinta was okay, but this time we were pleased to be near the sea and the restaurants. We ate out every night and the old part of the town has many really good places to eat and plenty to see. When the beach area is completed it will be even nicer.

If you're looking for a comfortable, pleasant hotel in delightful surroundings with no children (it's adults only), the we can highly recommend the Porto Santa Maria Hotel. We will certainly be coming back.

Room Tip: Definitely go for a sea view. We booked a sea view studio and were upgraded to an apartment on the...

This hotel is superb. The location is ideal if you are not too mobile and want a flat surface (although there are many cobbled pavements) to walk straight out of the hotel to the town, cable car or promenade. It is in the old town near restaurants and the fascinating Rua Santa Maria with it's painted doors and murals and abundant cafes and restaurants. The hotel is 4 star but with undoubted 5 star service. The staff are everything that you want in a hotel. They seem a happy united team , proud of their hotel and wanting to give a good service. There are smiles everywhere and return visitors greeted like long lost friends. We were particularly impressed by the youngest waiters aged only 17 who chat with easy charm to guests who are , for the most part, old enough to be their grandparents! Their training and work ethic is clearly already established, their desire for you to enjoy your meal and your stay obvious. . The food is good for buffet style although some nights better than others. Breakfast is also good with plenty of variety but if you arrive after 9am you may not be so lucky. The evening entertainment varied between somewhat bland and synthetic hotel style singing duos to an excellent salsa and meringue band. Don't miss the Madeiran folk night on Sunday where a hugely enthusiastic singing and dancing troupe perform in the dining room. So what is the downside of this hotel ? THE NOISE!! We were not aware of the incredible racket that was going to be happening just outside our window! One day there were 5 vehicles digging , lifting, tipping enormous quantities on the beach. It was intrusive and upsetting. Would we have gone there if we had known? No! We had some sympathy with the hotel who apparently had no say in this work to be done just outside their hotel. We gather they are not compensated although they do give their customers a refund of 10 euros per day each. We were disappointed that we had not been informed by our booking agency of the works. It did spoil our holiday but we can honestly say that this is such a great hotel we can't wait to go back, that is when the works have finished!

I felt really young here (in my early 40s) as its a place for a more senior holiday maker without a doubt, saying that it ment people were respectful and polite and relaxed.

The staff were super friendly and helpful.

Breakfast is not bad at all, a buffet but all hot and well presented. We ate in the restaurant twice and the food was good. There are a lot of restaurants near the entrance in the old town and tbh most were very average and expensive which made the hotel place seem a good option.

there is major engineering go on right out side the hotel and I guess it will for most of 2013 as its a big project. In the gardens area and with doors open you could here the works and if that will offend you wait till its all over. I didn't bother me and I actually found it kind of relaxing watching the trucks moving huge lumps of rock around.

There is a car park underneath which was free and secure . It's not easy to drive there from the airport without a decent map or sat nav as its a maze through the old town . Once you have Sussed it its no probs.

Wifi not available except in foyer which should be avail in all rooms really.

For the price it was very good

Room Tip: Keep away from downstairs rooms on the east side as you get people outside sitting on harbour wall t...

We booked a week at this hotel at the last minute and were not disappointed. The rooms were good and well appointed, the restaurant very good value and quality, bar and lounge comforatble, swimming pools and spa very enjoyable.
Located at the edge of the old town it was ideal for walking into Funchal and was also very close to the local bus routes and a miriad of alternative restaurants to eat at.
Having stayed here I wouldn't entertain I don't think I would stay anywhere else in Funchal as all other hotels appeared to be a good walk from tye centre and up a hill!

Room Tip: All rooms have good views

We have been to this hotel several times, and love it! The hotel is fabulous, and so are the staff. The location is perfect - "everything" is close by.
We find it intereseting to follow the work on the beach, to sea how the waterfront changes, and also the changes in the senter. For sure we miss the possibility to walk the promenade, but look forward to see the result next time!
We hear the workers when they are in action, but it is not possible to do that kind of work noiceless!, and it is not annoing. Anyway the hotel offers their guests shuttlebus to go to Vila Mare during the working hours.

This hotel is in a wonderful location in the Old Town, we loved it ! So easy to walk out for a meal in the evenings, a great choice of restuarants, in fact we rather wished we had not signed up for 3 meals in the hotel as they tended to be rather similar, just 'buffet' style. The only one we liked was the 'gourmet' night and was not a buffet, highly recommended.
Staff were very nice apart from at reception where a smile never creased their faces. We were lucky on arrival to get the young man who could not have been kinder. The two youngest women were the worst, the one with the shorter hair argued to the point of rudeness when we enquired about the courtesy bus.We were not aware that smoking was allowed on the terrace and don't like breathing in smoke while we are eating.A designated smoking area would be good. There is an atmosphere of warmth from the staff to returning visitors and that is only right and important for the hotel but it can make non returners feel a bit left out.The excellent 'pr' lady who is so warm and inclusive makes up for a lot ! All in all we had an enjoyable visit but were charged 126 euros too much. There was no explanation but we had it refunded.

Room Tip: choose a higher floor we asked for a quiet room but there were insomniacs in the room above all week...

We popped in to look at the hotel last year when we were staying elsewhere in Funchal, and loved the luxury feel and the location. We did not want to stay up at the Lido area and the other city centre hotels are up slopes or steep hills. It is within metres of all the Old Town restaurants and only 100 metres from the cable car station. The centre of Funchal is a 10 minutes flat walk.

We had a junior suite on the 3rd floor and loved it. Very clean, comfortable, spacious and we had two balconies (other rooms may vary). It was also on the same level as the newish roof terrace where we sunbathed and read. The site grounds are fairly small, but uncrowded and there was no shortage of loungers despite the hotel appearing full. Staff were excellent in the main, especially the famous Lina, super PR girl who made everyone feel wecome and special. On our first breakfast we noticed her hugging and kissing many guests and we thought they were long time friends and frequent visitors. No, within two days, we were also being hugged and kissed and she made us feel so welcome. Great lady.
We did find some female reception staff a little unwilling to advise on day to day tourism questions, as other guests also commented. We ate very good breakfasts in the Arsenal restaurant, but only had one buffet evening meal, which seemed a bit lacking in atmosphere compared to the many restaurants only just outside.

And now the BUT. We booked through a hotel booking site, but did not see any notice of the absolutely massive reconstruction works now underway all along the seafront of Funchal. After booking, I looked at the PortoBay Hotels website and on the Santa Maria page they did refer to the works. They did provide a 10 euro per person credit, usable in their restaurants, spa, bar and boutique. We happily used all 280 euros worth in our two weeks, including some meals at the PortoBay resort, that they allow you to use due to the construction. We often took the free PortoBay bus up to that resort and relaxed in peace.

While we were there, there were up to 4 big diggers, a crane and constant tipper trucks working right outside the hotel. It did become very wearing, especially as they worked from 8am up till 6.45 pm while we were there, with only Sundays off.

So, while the hotel is totally unable to control the noise of the works, it has tried to compensate financially, and offer alternative daytime places to go, we will not return until the noise and disruption to the seafront is completed. When it is, we will definitely return, and several times.

Room Tip: 3rd floor junior suite if you can afford it.
