Would have been 5 stars except for some small problems, let's get them out of the way first. We arrived a little after 12 mid day and had to wait 2 & 1/2 hours for our room to be ready, after travelling from 3am in the morning this was a little tasking as I have not experienced this at previous Pestana visits. This was tempered with a free drinks voucher, so that took the edge off a little. The fridge door in our room was loose and the kitchen area had an ant infestation, these were were reported and addressed efficiently, but the ants remained a problem through the week so I gave in and spent the rest of the week playing a free game "Ant Crush". That was it though, small beer really. The positives, a really smart hotel, pretty pool area and gardens with pool bar and Al Fresco restaurant. The superior suite (305) was well appointed, a large sitting area, bedroom and bathroom. We had a very good balcony with sea, pool and mountain views, great for chilling with a glass of wine. There was a small, functional kitchen area with crockery and cutlery provided, enough to facilitate self catering if you wish (which I think I'll try if I go back). There are good shops 5 minutes to the left of the hotel for your grocery needs and alcohol that matches the duty free for prices. It's a pleasant 20-30 minute walk into town depending which fork you take at the Carlton. You can also turn right to more shops and bars within minutes walk including our favourite the Casa Madeirense. All in all, an excellent hotel with patient, friendly staff and it's aesthetically pleasing to the eye, just a couple of small niggles which I know Pestana will address.
