“food and noise issues”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago NEW

Stayed at the hotel for nine sleepless nights at the beginning of May 2015. We had asked for a double bed which we did not have (first complaint) the two singles were then pushed together, not entirely satisfactory. The airconditioning was not working ,we complained at least four times to no avail so had to resort to leaving the balcony doors open all night, this meant we had traffic noise all night and dogs barking early mornings.
Our other main issue was being allocated a time to eat in the evening and a table we should sit at.The time we were given was 6.15pm, we never eat this early, the table allocated was not available at the time allocated. This resulted in another complaint or two and eventually we were told a table would be available to us from 7.15pm until 9.00pm, We heard other guests complaining about the same problem. The dining room is far too small for the number of guests and the problem will not be resolved until something is done about this. The food also left a lot to be desired it was very similar every day and not a lot of choice, we had fish soup two days running for example.
On the plus side the hotel was spotlessly clean everywhere and most of the staff were very nice, the more senior staff were not as helpful as they should have been I feel.
We will definitely not be returning to this hotel.

Room Tip: if you have to go, choose the back of the hotel

We have just returned from this hotel after staying there from 11th-18th May. We were on a half board basis.
The hotel is very clean and the rooms are pleasant. It looks like it has recently been refurbished. The pools are nice as is the spa area. The hotel staff are typical of the Madeirans. They are pleasant and as helpful as possible.
The downside of this hotel is the restaurant. Limited choice of food and It is far to small for the amount of guests. They have put as many tables as possible into the small space which makes it too intimate. There are 2 or sometimes 3 timeslots for dining. You are allocated a table and timeslot on arrival. If you get the 6.15 time slot you have to eat and vacate the restaurant for the 7.15 sitting and so it continues. When busy the last siting is 8.15.There are issues on the change over days when clients arrive at the hotel and miss their allocated siting. They just pile in. I feel sorry for the staff who cant cope. My wife and myself still work so when we go on holiday we want to be flexible when we eat and not to be dictated to. We like to take our time and relax. Our allocated table (table9) was a little round table jammed in a corner. It is too small and there was insufficient space for plates etc. The staff struggle to clear plates from tables and you are left with no space for your next course. We complained and were told we would be allocated a larger table. Unfortunately no one told the dining staff and on our 2nd visit to the restaurant we were still at the little cramped table. The restaurant was again full to bursting .The food was very similar to the previous evening so we decided to leave. Again we complained and the receptionist unsympathetically told me we had been moved to a new table and guests cant expect to keep moving around. I asked to speak to hotel manager at that point. I was not contacted and the following day we contacted Windsor travel who represent Jet2.com.
A rep arrived at the hotel and we informed her of the circumstances. She was not surprised and suggested we ask Jet2 for a refund of our half board supplement and we agreed to do so and ate our every evening. Jet2 has subsequently refunded us a small amount of money which I will investigate further. A few days later the hotel manager contacted me and tried her best to resolve our issues by offering a larger table and telling us she would hold it for us from the restaurant opening to closing. We appreciated this offer but declined as this did not address the limited food and overcrowding issues. She appeared to be generally concerned but due to design of dining area this could not be achieved.
My final thoughts on this matter are. Nice clean hotel but do not take the half board option. There are hundreds of good quality restaurants nearby and they are very reasonably priced.

.......screaming babies/squawking brats or barking dogs/traffic noise? For us, it's the former. The fact that is a child-free hotel was the main reason that we picked it, having had many a holiday ruined by other people's children.
Yes, the hotel is behind a busy traffic intersection and there are barking dogs in the adjacent apartments, so whether or not you would consider this hotel to be suitable depends on what sort of holiday you are looking for. If you want to laze around by the pool all day and do nothing, then maybe the noise would bother you. But, if you actually want to get out and do something and use this hotel as a base, it's perfect.
It is centrally placed, so it's a ten minute walk to either the lido or the town centre. Buses stop outside, or at the foot of a short hill. The decor is modern, nothing looks faded or shabby and the rooms and public areas are spotlessly clean and well maintained. It has a jacuzzi, spa and gym (none of which we used) and an outdoor pool.
We had a twin room on the fifth floor with a sea view. It was one of the ones with the miniature balcony, as mentioned in other reviews, but really all you have to do is slide back the glass doors to sit in the sun. If you don't like that, then you can go up on the roof terrace or sit outside by the pool. There was no kettle in our room, but there was a fridge. The bedroom was quite spacious, the bathroom has a shower and bidet. The noise from outside is lesser at night, however most people would turn on the air-conditioning and keep the doors closed anyway, as we did, so wouldn't notice it at all. We both slept well. We were bothered once by noise from the adjoining room: somebody was using the hairdryer next door first thing in the morning, and it sounded like they were in our bathroom (there is a locked connecting door).
The bar shuts at 11 pm, so barely enough time to get a nightcap if you've been out all day. The outside area could do with some more tables, particularly in the evening. Service is slow, as there is only one barman on however he ( Carlos, the elder one?) is entertaining and friendly, the drinks are extremely cheap and the measures generous...4 euros for a large dry martini, for example. There is entertainment in the bar area in the evenings but as we were out each night I didn't see any of it. The posters showed folk-dancing one night, a piano player another, that sort of thing. No bingo (good). Other staff, cleaners, reception, were also friendly and efficient.
We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis. There was a decent buffet choice in the morning, the quality of ingredients wasn't the greatest but it was fine given the price, which I shall come to later. You can get an omelette made for you if you want something freshly cooked. Beverages come from a push-button machine, again acceptable quality.
It looked like there were 3 sittings for dinner, of an hour each; not our cup of tea, so we didn't go for it. There are plenty of great restaurants nearby.
I used the pool once, on the morning of our departure and lay on a sun lounger for about half an hour: I didn't notice any traffic or dog noise.
Our four night stay 13th-16th May 2015 cost us less than we have spent on one night elsewhere. It really is incredible value for money, so it gets an "excellent" review when compared against other hotels in this price range. If we go back to Madeira, we would stay here again without hesitation.
( You may find that you are badgered into signing up for excursions when you check in; we weren't too impressed by this and so declined. The official yellow taxis also offer tours by cab. We booked one, it cost 100 euros, but this was for about seven hours so split between a few of you it works out much cheaper than most group tours. We chose where we wanted to go and how long we wanted to stay in each place, which was also preferable).

This remains a very good hotel for access to the centre of Funchal yet being only three quarters of a mile away. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are a good size. We appreciate the 'no children' rule. The staff are always pleasant and helpful, especially the irrepressible Tina on the front desk.
It still lacks one thing - in-room tea and coffee making facilities. This would be a welcome addition.
Despite this omission this is a good hotel.

This hotel is on a steep slope with very heavy traffic noisily going up and down. When we arrived we were put in room 619 , the first night we didnt get any sleep because of the noise from the traffic. We were moved the following day to a suite 330 and we couldnt hear the traffic but from 7am to late evening all we heard was barking dogs from the very nearby residential flats and the pumps from the pool . There was very limited drawer space in both rooms. We were not aware that everyone had a dining time for the evening meal which were 6.00pm till 7.00pm, 7.15pm till 8.15pm, 8.30pm till 9.30pm. There seemed a regular stream of people not realising their allotted meal times. No fault of the hotel but some of the guests didnt act or dress appropriately.
The food was basic and tasteless with a ‘plastic’ cheese on offer every night. The first night they had run out of beer and then one morning at breakfast there wasnt any fruit juice, any fresh fruit or butter. The shower heads in both rooms were very high and even though I am tall struggled to reach them.
Safe lock was 10 euros for the week
Tickets to get the free pool towels were supplied.
All the staff are very helpful and friendly especially the reception staff. The hotel is understaffed , the bar had 1 barman so the service was slow but under the circumstances he did his best
The walk to the resort centre is very steep and the pavements are very uneven, you have to be very waring when crossing the road because some of the drivers are erratic. The bus stops are near the hotel which were very handy. If a few improvements were made this would be an excellent hotel. with excellent staff.

i have just come back from this hotel and I want to recommend it. It is the third time I have been to Madeira but the best hotel so far. It is not far into the centre of Funchal and easy walking distance. I went with two other friends and we all had twin immaculate rooms over looking the gardens. The staff were especially friendly and they worked so hard. Three special thanks to Carlos the barman, Diogo and Jhonny who helped in the bar, carried our luggage and waited on tables.. You made us laugh and made our holiday. We will be back!

Room Tip: we had lovely room overlooking the garden at the back of the hotel
