Just arrived back from a week in Funchal and I enjoyed my stay. Hot most days, just a couple overcast, but warm.
The hotel is quite small with friendly staff. The rooms are very comfortable and clean, sea views fab, but as stated before, next to a road, so the patio doors need to stay shut. Air Con in rooms and modern. Fridge, no coffee etc in my room, apparently you have to be Saga guests or pay.
The food is a bit hit and miss, some days really good and others not so good. There are 2 sittings, 6pm and 7.30 to 9.30pm. You are supposed to have the same table each evening, and some didn't like to be moved about, but I never had the same table, and this was not a problem for me.
The people in the hotel, mostly, were elderly, and the "entertainment" started at around 8.15pm, which was definitely fine by me as it was not good. The piano player,( I was looking forward to hearing ), The singers x 2, were the same, not good. The only saving grace was possibly the local dance troupe.
The outside pool was boring, and very cold, but there was a semi open pool with spa effect. I only went in once as I didn't enjoy, it felt like being in a huge bath.
Funchal, turn left from the hotel, is a very pretty city, without the city feel. There is the old town and lots of small arcades, with plenty of shops, the indoor market, and plenty to see. It is approx 15 mins walk to centre, which is all down hill,
The harbour, left from the hotel and cross the road, is approx 10 mins walk , also down hill. Cruise ships arrive most days, it's great to watch them come and go, Britannia docked one of the days.
To the right of the hotel, (past Reids Hotel ) and approx.15 mins walk, is the Lido, and another 10 mins walk takes you to Forum shopping centre. All these places can be visited by the local bus, which runs along the main road. Cheap and every 10 mins.
Reids Hotel is worth a visit, afternoon tea ,(37 euros) in beautiful surroundings, and it is where Sir Winston Churchill stayed.
Cable car up the mountain, spectacular views, but if you are afraid of heights, scarey.
Very safe to walk around. Visit the cake/coffee shop, just before Reids opposite. Amazing.
All in all, I enjoyed my stay. Very relaxing..
