“Worth paying for sea view, central location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

Just arrived back from a week in Funchal and I enjoyed my stay. Hot most days, just a couple overcast, but warm.
The hotel is quite small with friendly staff. The rooms are very comfortable and clean, sea views fab, but as stated before, next to a road, so the patio doors need to stay shut. Air Con in rooms and modern. Fridge, no coffee etc in my room, apparently you have to be Saga guests or pay.
The food is a bit hit and miss, some days really good and others not so good. There are 2 sittings, 6pm and 7.30 to 9.30pm. You are supposed to have the same table each evening, and some didn't like to be moved about, but I never had the same table, and this was not a problem for me.
The people in the hotel, mostly, were elderly, and the "entertainment" started at around 8.15pm, which was definitely fine by me as it was not good. The piano player,( I was looking forward to hearing ), The singers x 2, were the same, not good. The only saving grace was possibly the local dance troupe.
The outside pool was boring, and very cold, but there was a semi open pool with spa effect. I only went in once as I didn't enjoy, it felt like being in a huge bath.
Funchal, turn left from the hotel, is a very pretty city, without the city feel. There is the old town and lots of small arcades, with plenty of shops, the indoor market, and plenty to see. It is approx 15 mins walk to centre, which is all down hill,
The harbour, left from the hotel and cross the road, is approx 10 mins walk , also down hill. Cruise ships arrive most days, it's great to watch them come and go, Britannia docked one of the days.
To the right of the hotel, (past Reids Hotel ) and approx.15 mins walk, is the Lido, and another 10 mins walk takes you to Forum shopping centre. All these places can be visited by the local bus, which runs along the main road. Cheap and every 10 mins.
Reids Hotel is worth a visit, afternoon tea ,(37 euros) in beautiful surroundings, and it is where Sir Winston Churchill stayed.
Cable car up the mountain, spectacular views, but if you are afraid of heights, scarey.
Very safe to walk around. Visit the cake/coffee shop, just before Reids opposite. Amazing.
All in all, I enjoyed my stay. Very relaxing..

Room Tip: High floor sea view, doors closed if you want quiet.

This hotel ticked all the boxes for me and my wife. We checked in and was given a Garden room which was at the back of the Hotel. Whilst checking in the lady on the desk tried her hardest to sell us some trips but we resisted the temptation. The room was large comfy and quiet. The bathroom was full equipped. We sat around the outdoor pool for a while which was large very clean looking. We also used the undercover pool which was so warm we ended up in it most afternoons. The restaurant got very busy at Breakfast. A different menu available every night which was well presented and as a buffet style allowed you to pick what you want. the Staff was very friendly and spoke several different languages.

Room Tip: This hotel was in a great situation for exploring Funchal, you can book trips from the reception but...

We stayed for a bed and breakfast week at The Enotel Quinta do Sol in Funchal, Madeira. It was a great week and the hotel was clean and food was plentiful and well presented. The staff were helpful and very friendly. We were on the second floor with a sea view and I imagine the higher rooms had a better view. I was a bit worried about traffic noise having read other reviews of this hotel but we had no problems. If your expecting large balconies don't go to this hotel as most of the rooms have balconies with standing room only! However, the room was very spacious and was equipped with a small fridge and a valuables safe. It is on a hill which might deter some - and a fair walk to the marina and town.
Funchal itself was bustling and there's loads to do. There is the tourist bus which is a 48 hour ticket. Please use the local buses - fantastic - they go everywhere on the island and it's quite an experience climbing the hills. Wonderful scenery everywhere with numerous viewpoints. Don't leave without going on the cable car - especially the link between the two main gardens - spectacular!
Our favourite restaurant was Passione D'Italia; past Reids towards the Lido - reasonable and delicious food with friendly service.
On a previous trip to Funchal we stayed in an apartment nearer the town which was as equally good as an hotel stay. An alternative to consider!

The Hotel was well located with a 15 minute walk into the centre of Funchal. Staff very friendly especially the bar staff who were great. Drinks reasonably priced. Booked a sea view which we got but be aware that some rooms (and we had one of them) have a balcony which is about 12inches wide - definitely not enough space to sit out or even stand outside if you're on the large side!! Room was very nice other than the balcony. Also be aware that due to the location if you are on the front of the hotel it is noisy from the busy main road. Also agree about the dogs when you sit outside (that's if you get good weather) - they do tend to bark for most of the day. Trips reasonably priced. Worth going on the toboggan ride but be aware that the walk back down to the harbour is very steep. Food in the restaurant was good until the last couple of days when we found that because we were on the second sitting for dinner we tended to have what was left from the first sitting - particularly when it was sea bass - we got the remains. When asked to replace it the cook merely scraped off what was left. Overall though enjoyed the holiday but Madeira not as picturesque as we thought it would be - probably due to the weather being worse than in England when we went.

Room Tip: The ones on the back of the hotel don't have a sea view but overlook a park and are quieter

Hotel is well located and is within walking distance to nearly all locations within the city. Staff are very friendly and helpful, we stayed on half board and there was a good selection of food on the evening buffet. Drinks are reasonably priced within the hotel. Rooms are a reasonable size and very clean. Booked trips around the island at reception and were good value with friendly and informative drivers. We enjoyed our week long stay.

First all the good stuff. Location, staff, food, cleanliness, all the things you'd hope to find. However the reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of the dogs in the nearby apartment block which barked all day long. You couldn't sit out and read (though to be honest plenty of people did so maybe it was just us?).

Room Tip: Rooms at front have balconies and sea views (and barking dogs). Rooms at the back overlook a run dow...

Fancied a quick spell of sun but didn't want a long haul trip so booked a week in Funchal at the Enotel. First impressions are wonderful whoever decorated this hotel I want them to do my house! Check in was quick, efficient and helpful and we were shown to our room. The hotel is in a lovely situation where it is quiet but you can walk into Funchal for some exercise,it is uphill on the way back. Beautiful heated pool half exposed to the outside, lovely little seating areas inside and out for drinks pre and after dinner. We stayed on a half board basis and the food was plentiful and well cooked with a choice of several dishes you could always find something to enjoy. Staff in the restaurant were young but incredible friendly always finding time to say hello and asking about your day. Supermarket literarily round the corner meant you could buy wine and beer to enjoy on your balcony with a mini fridge included in your room but prices were so reasonable that sitting in the bar was easily affordable.
On my return home I discovered I d left 2 pairs of shoes behind, shouldn't pack last minute, on contacting the hotel they found them and then posted them back to me, such amazing customer care, I can't thank them enough.
If you want some sun, especially during our long winter, don't want a long flight, want a stylish hotel close to pretty city with plenty to do but quiet when you want it to be, then this hotel and destination is perfect.
