“Not one complaint”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

When we arrived on the 3rd June we realised what all the other reviewers were talking about,The outside as you approach looks very drab but once inside everything changes, It is nicely decorated everything is clean and tidy, the staff were friendly and helpful, I did hear a couple complaining about the air con keeping them awake and they were moved to another room. I do think a sea view is a must as the view out the back of the hotel is not that good. We had a sea view on the 4th floor which was perfect, the road can get noisy during the day but who stays in the room? Night time it was ok and once you shut the patio doors its fine. The Hotel is in a good location with the centre of Funchal about 15 mins walk to the left and the Lido about the same to the right. Breakfast was good and there were enough choices to keep most people happy. The pool and surrounding area was good with plenty of sunbeds. I would say that the Hotel caters more for the elderly with it looking like a good 75% of guests past retirement age, We are in our 50s and and didn't find it a problem. Most of the guests were German and kept in thier own little groups. All in all we had a perfect 11 days and would definetly go back to this hotel again,I hear it is closing for a few months later in the year for a revamp so with a lick of paint on the outside it will compete with the best. Madiera is a lovely place and caters more for couples over say 40 who like something better than Discos, karaoki and bingo.

“Worth what we paid”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2012

My brother and I stayed from 8th to15th June 2012. This was our 2nd stay at this hotel. Had a sea facing room with balcony, which we enjoyed. Especially when watching the firework festival on the Saturday night. Our only complaint was that the hot food for the breakfast buffet was never more than luke warm. A microwave for customer use would have been helpful. Have heard that the hotel is closing in October for a few months for a full refurbishment. Lets hope that extends to the dining room. Would stay here again.

“We left the hotel and island satisfied”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2012

The first impression of the hotel, we arrived late night, was not very friendly. We got the noisiest room on the floor. On each floor there is only one such room. Maybe reception staff tries, who last it. It looks out on busy street, which also uphill, so here the car slows going down or significantly add when climbing uphill. There is the place for hotel suppliers as well. It just does not have a mistake, no night and early morning background sound is missing. Ignoring the fact, that we had ordered garden view room.

After moving the next day we were satisfied. Room interior was also significantly more up-to-date than in the previous room. Functionality and quality of room cleaning had not a mistake.

Breakfast buffet offer was almost perfect. For our taste there was not enough fruit, but we have an experience that in other hotels worldwide there is the fruit of much less or almost none.
We were on trip all the day, so we do not use another boarding. We used to come to hotel quite late. The more we regret that the dinner was only possible served as buffet in the restaurant and it still operating solely to 9 PM. No possible to order single meals. It is probably effective for the hotel, but we do not use the hotel's restaurant as fattening, with the specified selection of meals only. In addition, in the destination especially offering to explore the island is a short opening hours of the restaurant quite unpleasant.
Of course it was not a major problem because there is many restaurants in town. I think hotel management is obviously satisfied too.

Finally, we can say that we left the hotel and island satisfied. The hotel is not exactly new, but everything is functional and well maintained. If we will consider visit Madeira again and want to stay in Funchal, we would think seriously about Hotel Quinta do Sol again.

Room Tip: Ask for garden or sea view.

“Marvellous value for money hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2012

Upgraded from poor rearward facing room on 1st floor to sea facing room with balcony on 4th floor, this made the holiday. Breakfast more than satisfactory. Pool only just heated, is nice on a really hot day. Plenty of sun beds. Bar prices not too bad - Euro 3.50 a pint.

Room Tip: You absolutely must ensure you've got a sea facing room (preferably with balcony).

“Mixed experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2012

We recently stayed at the hotel and found the staff to be totally helpful and friendly. The interior is extremely clean and welcoming (the outside of the building is not very attractive); the location is great, in a good area and within a pleasant walk of the cathedral and the centre; I found the optional wifi very good value at 10 euros for the week. A couple of points against: the food was not inspiring, with some dinner choices such as "grilled red mullet fillets" being some other, unidentified baked fish, and not particularly tasty. There was a wide choice of foods, however. Strangely, only members of package groups are allowed free coffee or tea after dinner in the restaurant. If you inadvertently help yourself you will be chased for payment! Beats me why they don't just include it in with the rest of the meal. Also, not much provided in the way of toiletries by the daily room service.

Room Tip: Sea view is preferred and is worth the small supplement
