“Great location. Great staff.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2010

We had a lovely week long stay at this beautiful hotel. We stayed in room 102, a standard room. The only disadvantage to this was we could hear people walking around in the reception area directly above us. The room itself was nicely decorated, with a lovely bathroom and private outdoor space with our own sun beds. The maids we extremely polite & helpful and made swans out of our bed linen every day! The reception staff spoke great English and we also very helpful. Not having stayed in a luxury hotel before, we felt we missed out a little as we were given no information about the spa an did not realise that some of it was complimentary. I guess we could have asked.
As we were on our honeymoon we recieved a complimentary bottle of bubbly. Nice touch.
The pool area was clean and towels were provided on each of the loungers.
Breakfast choices were varied, from a full English buffet (so you can pick the things you like) to muffins and pastries, cereals and yoghurts. Great service too. Lots of little lizards are there waiting to catch the crumbs... good entertainment!
We ate in the restaurant on two nights and it was fabulous. We actually found it to be reasonable value for what you go. GREAT steak and really lovely puddings.
We stayed here on a B&B basis as we like to head out and about and we were not disappointed. Lots to see and do - The tour of Blandy's Wine Lodge is a real bargain! Avoid the red tour bus... waste of money.
The hotel was well positioned for sight seeing, about 20-30 minutes on foot to the centre of Funchal. It is up quite a steep hill, but after a couple of goes we got used to it. Around 30 minutes on foot to a super market for snacks etc. Would not recommend this hotel to those with mobility restrictions. We actually really liked it being a bit out of town, it was extremely peaceful at night and tucked away so road noise stopped in the evening. Was not loud enough to bother us in the day.
Gardens are stunning.
And, if you get the chance, go up into the mountains. You will not be disappointed!

We stayed here over the Christmas holiday having had a very hectic working year without a break and were looking forward to a serious "chill out", Quinta da Casa Branca certainly did not disappoint. The location is perfect, staff are incredibly efficient and friendly, the garden and swimming pool area well cared for and beautiful. Although there were plenty of other guests, you had the feeling sometimes that you had the whole place to yourself! The rooms are spotless, spacious and very comfortable. We also used the sauna etc regularly and they too are very good.
We only ate in the restaurant on one occassion for the "Christmas Eve Gala Dinner" - (having caused a few problems being vegetarian!-which was handled in the usual efficient way) this was very good. Breakfast was also excellent with a superb buffet choice and also a selection of "cooked" options served to your table.
The only very slight negative comment was that you had to go outside to the restaurant and breakfast room and as it poured with rain a great deal of the time we were there we did get wet!! (however we were told that these were very unusual weather conditions!!!)
Overall superb and would love to go back again in the future.

To those of you who do not know what tranquility is, it is CASA BRANCA. I found this hotel to celebrate my husbands retirement from BT (he joined in 1963) I booked initially through Expedia and found the staff through various email dealings to be both courteous and charming. Good quality Champagne and a card signed by all staff on my husbands birthday awaited us on our return from the day at the flower festival. Our special sports car was delivered on time, our private collection at the airport. All of this was undertaken with the very understated service that only a 5* hotel staff can offer.

We returned this year and booked directly through SLH. We were greeted as old friends and upgraded not once but twice into one of the suites. It was lovely to be back.

Cleanliness, food, service, library, in fact everything we needed. Nothing is too much trouble for Christina and her staff. Even to the point of check out being told Mrs .......... I haven't seen you this trip I am sorry I wasn't here when you arrived.

I hope to return again in 2010 to Madeira and to Casa Branca. Regards to all staff especially those hardworking ladies in the garden

The hotel is set in beautiful gardens where I would often wander during the day - stupidly I sat on a summer seat one afternoon and my feet and ankles were evidently bitten to bits by mosquitos. The gardens are well watrered during the night to the extent that the grass is actually very damp and therefore a fine breeding area for these insects and for whatever else. Please take loads of sprays etc as the bites are the worst I have encountered.
The food in the restaurant is expensive but more importantly the standard can leave a bit to be desired - we ordered two pasta dishes - suffice to say the chef needs a lesson before preparing any more such dishes.
Taking everything into account we enjoyed our holiday and would go back.

This hotel is a slave to its architect/designer. Although set in beautiful gardens, the buildings resemble a Swiss clinic for unmentionable diseases more than a luxurious hotel. The management seem to want to enforce a feeling of tranquillity, but this had the effect of ensuring that the public rooms, including the lounges and bar, were almost always empty because they had no atmosphere at all. We did not use them because we were nervous that our conversation or (dare I say) laughter might be perceived as disrespectful. The surgical square lines inside the building needed to be softened with drapes and flowers, and the silence with music, although the architect might have a seizure at the thought.
There was a sign in Reception on our first day announcing the closure of the swimming pool due to maintenance. The manager explained that there unacceptable levels of bacteria in the water. Our threats of transferring to another hotel mysteriously caused the problem to be rectified and the pool re-opened the next morning. Not exactly convincing or confidence building.
The Garden Restaurant where they served an excellent breakfast was a highlight, but the lunch menu was overpriced and pretentious, as was the main restaurant, which we avoided after fellow guests said how expensive it was, and that they had sent food back.
The staff were always helpful and friendly. The bedrooms were well equipped and comfortable, although lacking any touches like tea and coffee, flowers or fruit, or even a bottle of mineral water, until we complained, and then we got flowers and fruit.
In summary, a hotel designed by a pretentious intellectual for himself and people like him. Definitely lacking customer focus.

We thank you for your review regarding our hotel and facilities, and we are sorry that you found the architecture/decoration of the hotel too cold however the hotel was intentionally designed that way and it wouldn’t make sense to alter it, particularly as it is a feature that many of our clients admire and in many cases the very reason they choose our hotel.

We have carefully read your comments about our Restaurants as we are always interested in our guest’s opinions in order to improve our service, we are thus glad that you considered the Garden Pavilion a highlight of your stay but we regret that you didn’t try the Main Restaurant as you would have found that we have a menu that tries to cover a wide price range.

We are also sorry that you were inconvenienced by the pool being closed on the day of your arrival however the pool purifying system works with copper isotopes, as these are a far healthier and ecological option to chlorine, and this system requires occasional maintenance work, this has nothing to do with levels of bacteria as you seemed to have understood. We take enormous care with the quality of all our facilities and services and this obviously includes the daily monitoring of our pool water to insure that it is free of any bacteria. This however does not seem to have been the reason for wanting to change hotel but rather, as you told our GM, that you found the hotel too quiet.

We are nevertheless happy that you liked our service and found our staff to be helpful and friendly and as such hope that this made up for some of your disappointment.

We stayed for a week & returned yesterday. The hotel staff are very friendly & helpful & the service is great & unobtrusive. We enjoyed eating in the restaurant twice, had lunch twice & tea on the roof terrace is a must. It is convenient for other restaurants closeby too.
The gardens are a great bonus, they are beautifully kept. & a haven of quiet relaxation. We didn't see much of other guests, except at the lovely breakfast,, mostly couples too. What a treat to eat outside with great views of the garden & over Funchal too. It always seems very quiet & there is lots of space to lose yourself in.
The pool is in a lovely setting & not busy at all.either. Nothing seemed to much trouble or rushed. We visited the spa a few times & that was never crowded either.
Though it takes about 20 minutes to central Funchal we enjoyed the walk - the way back is uphill - but madeira is a hilly place so that's to be expected.
The hotel booked a levada walk & dolphin watching trip for us too. I will definitely return & recommend it to others. We stayed in a standard room & booked direct & got a very good price too - see the website for details.

We stayed for six nights in September 2009. The hotel consists mostly of ground level rooms plus a two story block of superior rooms, all set in very spacious grounds. The hotel is in a quiet location, although ten minutes steep walking from the waterfront. The rooms are excellent, except they are rather dimly lit. Breakfast was very good. We mostly ate out in the evening, but one evening we did try the set menu, which was limited but good. The staff were friendly and obliging, although service could be slow in the bar.
