Booked this hotel following excellent reviews on trip advisor and weren't disappointed. Probably one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. Beautiful gardens, very friendly and helpful service from hotel staff. Great location, really felt you were away from it all but yet easy 10 minute bus ride into centre of Funchal. Very relaxing place to stay.
Large bedroom with patio doors onto garden and own terrace area with sun loungers. Wouldn't bother to book superior room as standard rooms have better access to garden and much more outside space. Superior rooms have very small balcony, suppose it depends what you like, but very glad we didn't spend the extra money.
Huge choice for breakfast and everything fresh. Fanatastic sitting out on garden terrace for breakfast as sun rises over the hills. Pool lovely and hotel does appear to be quiet as so many different places for people to sit out.
Have never returned to a hotel as like to go to different places but definitely would return to this hotel and Maderia. We didn't eat in hotel as found a fantastic little bakery/cafe just down the road (out of gates and turn left a few hundred yards down hill). Used by locals all times of day, do great sandwiches for lunch and cakes. Also have bottles of cold drinks much cheaper than hotel. (Only downside of hotel - not allowed to put own drinks in mini-bar) We ate out in the old town most nights. Riso at the end of rue santa maria has terrace overlooking the sea, had great lunch there with spectacular views over sea. Arsenios, rue d carlos, fanastic fish kebabs cooked on barbeque.
Buses are great and easy to use. You need to buy a travelcard from the centre of town from self service machines near Praca da autonomia. Each journey on town buses (horarios do funchal) is set amount no matter how far you travel. If you pay on the bus costs 2 euros per journey but with card less than 1 euro. You can buy a bus timetable from the tourist information office. Most buses leave from main road along the sea in town and have electronic bus signs telling you when next one is coming. From the hotel you either can get buses from the main road at the bottom outside Cliff Bay hotel, lots go into town, or you can turn right out the hotel and just round the corner is bus stop for no. 24. We only got buses and never got a taxi anywhere. Got bus up to Monte which took about an hour but interesting drive through Funchal and round the hill through little villages. Only cost us one trip ie less than 1 euro.
There are buses from airport but didn't concide with our flight. Aerobus does stop at Cliff Bay Hotel and then just 5 minute walk to hotel. We got taxi which cost 30 euros and took 20 minutes.
Loved Maderia - beautiful scenery and wonderful friendly people. Had been worried that would be full of older people but there is lots going on for others (canyoning, mountain biking, diving if you like outdoor activities). For our week in end of October temperature most days 24 C and only tiny amount of rain one morning, not sure whether we were just lucky.
