“On the whole - quite pleasant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

Our first impression of the area leading to the hotel was disappointing. Having dropped off other guests at different hotels on the way from the airport these were all very nice - pretty shops, cafes, gardens, etc. However the approach to the Pestana Bay was gloomy and not a very salubrious area. No pretty walks, no shops, a couple of cafes on the front promenade, which is not easily accessible due to works being carried out. To compensate for this there was a regular courtesy bus into Funchal. It is right on the not very attractive beach - grey stones and grey sand. Now to the good bits. The hotel itself is lovely - attractive dining areas, inside and out, beautiful swimming pool with plentiful sitting areas. There is also a small attractive garden along the beach side. All the rooms face the sea and are very clean and comfortable, well-equipped bathrooms with lovely big towels. We were on a full-board package, and as we are vegetarians the choice of meals (buffet-style) was rather limited, but the food was plentiful and of good quality. The staff were very helpful and at times provided us with a vegetarian option when there was nothing for us in the buffet. As for the drinks - WOW! Wines, liqueurs, soft drinks, all unlimited and included in the price! But nobody got drunk!! When the building work on the beach is finished this would be an ideal place for families with children, due to its beach-front position.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor - it's much quieter.

We spent a lovely 2weeks at this hotel at the begging of June 2013, the service, food and rooms could not have been better. The rooms were very big, very comfortable beds, and the sound of the sea washing up stones on the beach wonderful. Staff were very friendly and worked so hard. Pool area great and very attractive gardens. There are nice walks along the sea front on both sides.

Some damage was done in the winter to the beach and path, but this should be repaired . Not really ideal for children

The hotel was very good all round with excellent facilities and very helpful staff. We were all inclusive and the drinks and food were of excellent quality. We had been looking forward so much to our first visit to Madeira but one thing really spoilt it, and that was the work on the "beach" . Heavy mechanical diggers and a lorry were working from early morning until early evening clearing away the huge round stones that made up the beach. The noise was horrendous! Sat in the pool area, dining area or in our room all we could hear was bang clatter crash!!!
Why I ask why wasn't the work done in the winter months. We will return to Madeira sometime in the future but to another hotel.

My wife and I have just returned from our third holiday at this beachside hotel. Pestana Group has spared no expense in having the entire building totally refurbished. It was closed for three months and now it is looking at its best! Fortunately most of the staff have been retained and are as pleasant and helpful as usual. For an all-inclusive holiday by the sea the Pestana Bay is hard to beat - with its splendid fresh water swimming pool and the ability to allow guests to eat all their excellent meals outside on the terrace - weather permitting! We hope to return next year.

Really nice hotel, clean and welcoming. All inclusive was excellent and selection of food at each meal superb. Large bedrooms with small kitchen area but it really wasn't necessary. All rooms have view of the ocean but the beach is stoney and black sand so not particularly attractive. Pool area very attractive with good number of loungers. All in all, very good.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the garden are really nice, with the sea just beyond.

The very best thing about this hotel is hearing the sea as you wake up. The rooms all overlook the sea and are large and clean, best bed ever! The staff work very hard and all but one always had a smile. The food is ok but I have had a better selection in a three star hotel.
Lovely walk to neighbouring fishing port along the beach.
The worse bits: entertaiment is not great, that said the area is so small you could not fit more than 30 around it if it was good.
The area around the hotel is dangerous, the promenade has collapsed leaving big holes, exposed pipes and sharp edges. The tunnel on the path to Funchal is closed too. Either sides of the hotel are abandoned building sites too.

Room Tip: Choose upper floors to avoid noise and smell of restaurant, do not try and enter the beach from the...

For travellers going to this Hotel there is some serious building work going on at the sea front.
The promenade had been severely damaged by a storm so they are in the process of re-building it.
Only at the Hotel a couple of days. very pleasant, food ok. A little crowded and not really suitable for families.
Rooms are a decent size with balcony and ALL face the sea.
Although free shuttle bus to Funchal available daily, recommend car hire. BUT avoid Hertz.
