We had a wonderful time. We noticed the great attention to details. We stayed in a superior see view room and were not disappointed. Special mention to the bedding. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. My wife had a little accident, they arranged taxi to hospital and back. A big thanks specially to Raphael - waiter we met during breakfast buffet - from for his genuine kindness and friendliness. Evening buffet is good but breakfast buffet is a must. Everything you should dream of for breakfast is here and more. Only thing we didn't like is that some waiters are overzealous and take your plate even before you have finish. And finally, the spa is very good with also indoor and outdoor sea water pools. Bottom line, if we come back to Madeira I will not stay anywhere else.

Other reviewers have said it before, this is a large hotel which can be difficult to find your way around, it has two towers and two sets of lifts, having found other lost souls in the corridors looking for their room numbers and only finding the lift to the sea platform after the 3rd try. Some good signs would not go amiss! The rooms are very good with large balconies and ocean views, bathrooms are spacious with marble fittings and mirrowed walls, some of the fittings are a little old fashioned and the toilet seat in my room was missing a few button rests, it should have been replaced.
The public areas are very antiseptic and cold, you would not want to sit on a black plastic/leather couch looking at a breezblock wall, all the decor is grey ,black and white, the velvet bar is black and very small for such a big hotel.
I did not try the dine around options but found the food at the breakfast buffet was fine. The evening buffett was poor for a 5* not much choice of main course and on the Brazillian themed evening the main meat course was a very dried up looking bean and mince stew.
I would not stay here again as I found the hotel too big cold and impersonal, the staff were pleasant as they are in most hotels in Madeira.

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean views. I stayed in 343 which is the top floor overlooking the mini golf and gar...

We visited this hotel for two weeks at the beginning of March. We have nothing but praise for this hotel, all the staff were helpful and friendly and 'spot on'.

Everywhere was immaculately clean, the restaurants were all good, although our favourite was the Mamma Mia. We did the Dine Around deal so ate in all the restaurants, we did try the Sushi but unfortunately it was not to our taste. As it wasn't too busy we were allowed more than one visit per week to the restaurants which was a bonus. We did eat in the buffet a few times and found the food good and varied. It was so lovely to have breakfast on the terrace with omelettes made to order, accompanied by a glass of bubbly!

The Black Velvet bar was very nice, with varied musical entertainment - especially the guitarist. We found the drink prices very competitive and actually cheaper than most nearby pubs.

We stayed in Room 312 which was the same as the other higher rooms, with a beautiful sea view and as we don't like heights this suited us fine.

We took taxis into Funchal and back as it is quite a walk for us and is uphill on the way back. The price varied between 5 and 8 euros each way.

All in all we had a great holiday and would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and look forward to returning sometime in the future.

The hotel was great - clean and spacious.
The room was very comfortable with a huge bed and great sea view!
There was a very good gym and great spa.
The weather was not great so we used all the facilities.

This hotel is amazing, it is large but it is spotlessly clean , all rooms have a sea view, free wifi and safe. We were on the eighth floor and had the most amazing views. The food is fabulous, I am not a great fish lover but the fish looked good so I ate far more than I usually would. Mama Mia restaurant at front of hotel very good and part of the done around, didn't try the sushi or tapas restaurant so cannot comment on those. If you want pizza and chips, larger swilling loudmouths , loud music etc then this hotel is not for you.!! But if you are looking for exceptional customer service from all members of staff, a clean environment and good food then it does not come much better. Weather was a bit hit and miss, high winds, hail and the occasional sunny bit...apart from the day we left when it was glorious. Hole in one pub across the road from front of hotel was good fun as was up Madeira ( jeep tour ) and Quinta do Riacho (horse riding). Sad to leave

Just stayed for last week in march,
Stayed at the vidamar resorts hotel in funchal,
We had a superior ocean view room on the 6th floor,
Free safe and wifi are a boon,
No problems with wifi, unlike some hotels,
Very friendly staff right throughout the hotel, nothing at all too much trouble,
Excellent kingsize bed, mini bar well worth the 6 euros,
Food choice and quality excellent,
Madeira is is fantastic place for sheer variation in scenery, absolutely stunning,
Excellent road network right across the island,
All in all an excellent holiday

Room Tip: Book the superior ocean view rooms, well worth the extra

The Vidamar is a hotel of contrasts but none of them are such as to put off the holidaymaker looking for a relaxing stay on the island. The staff are superb - welcoming, friendly and attentive and nothing is too much bother. The hotel is something of a rabbit warren and it is easy to get lost manoeuvring between lifts, corridors and floors but once you get it right the journey is worthwhile! The sun loungers on the lowest deck close to the sea, great Spa facilities, pools inside and out and rooms with views.
The catering is a bit hit and miss - one omelette was memorable for all the wrong reasons - but the barbecue grill was great, salads are varied, meat and fish fine and puddings good for the sweet toothed. The hotel has arrangements with two local restaurants; a Spanish Tapas bar which was hopeless - wrong menu displayed, over booked and frantic so we left - and Mamma Mia, an excellent Italian restaurant with fine food and service.
Overall then, provided you are happy with the big hotel experience this is a very enjoyable and reasonable place to base yourself in Madeira although I recommend a car, if you are going to do the island justice. Great service does go a long way, and in the case of the Vidamar, easily outsrips any shortcomings.

Room Tip: Upgrades get you larger rooms which are worth having.
