“Great relaxing holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

We spent a week mid-March at this quiet sea-front hotel walking distance to central Funchal. We found the reception friendly and helpful( Gilda) and the hotel modern, clean and well decorated with full ameneties.
The indoor heated pool is small but for an extra charge we had full use all day of the FANTASTIC Spa. This is free if you pay for one the excellent massages. This huge sea water spa is modestly underpublicised and we had it almost for our exclusive personal use.
Sunbathing was also possible on the vast expanses outside with full sea view and day restaurant.
The room was large, totally peaceful, clean with good beds overloking the ocean. The extra charge well worth it. All functionned correctly including the wifi. The breakfast was copious but the evening buffet variable.
So overall we had a relaxing week, close to the town which means we will come again

Room Tip: Pay the extra euro 10 for the larger sea view rooms

We were pleasantly surprised. Or should I say we were not let down. The position is great. Fabulous views. Excellent facilities and a very helpful and friendly team. Would definately come back. The sea views are stunning. Swimming in the salt water pool looking over the edge directly over the sea has to be done. The gym is very eell equipped. There is also a fresh water pool and sauna and steam room or yoy can go for the whole spa experience in a completely seperate dedicated quiet facility for an extra charge.

Was in a good location, pretty well everything within a half hr walk. The hop on hop off bus stop is just a short walk to the west of the hotel. Staff were all helpful, nice and polite, but none overly warm and friendly. Bed was comfy enough, but there is either one huge body pillow or one thin standard pillow, neither of which were comfortable for me. Nights were pretty quiet, so I had decent sleeps. Room was long and narrow, but good sized, and I like the balcony. Breakfast buffet was adequate, some mornings they had an omlette station set up on the terrace outside. For convenience, had the dinner buffet a couple of nights, and food was barely edible. The lounge was nice but on the quiet side, except for Saturday night, there was a piano player and singer.

Room Tip: I was in room 216, to the ocean side. Right under was the gym, and they had afternoon aerobics clas...

We stayed at the Vidamar for a week at the end of February. The hotel is very modern with a minimalist look and is spotlessly clean. We chose not to upgrade to a superior room as we thought our allocated room was perfectly fine, very spacious and comfortable and OK, we didn't get the great views but we hadn't planned on staying in our room much anyway. Food was really good, a different theme every night with one 'waiter service' evening which was very nice as a change. We also ate out at Mamma Mia, a very nice Italian restaurant, where you can have a credit towards your bill. Despite our best intentions we didn't make use of the gym or the spa but we did have a swim in the indoor pool (too cold for the outdoor pool in February) and enjoyed the sauna. The thing that made the difference about this holiday, and why I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Whereas in some hotels, there may be one or two staff who say hello and have a chat with you, at the Vidamar it seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Thanks for helping us to enjoy our holiday!

We arrived at the Vidamar for 4 nights in March. We knew that the hotel had just changed names/flagships and were a little nervous at the service level given the "bugs" may not have been worked out yet... Upon arriving we were shown our room immediately on the 10th/top floor. What a spectacular view! The room is basic, and very basic compared to USA standards. The bed is okay but too firm for us, the decor was a 3 star hotel, the bathroom was ok, the towels were thin, the bedding was 3 star, the patio had basic plastic furniture. Now the good points...the service and staff was magnificent. The SPA treatment was great and cheap, 50 minute massage for $65 Euros plus we had a 15% coupon and for some treatments they offered 50% off monthly ( if couples, get the outside room). The pools were large and had plenty of lounge chairs. The GM, Brian helped make our stay wonderful. We only ate breakfast at the Vidamar and it was less than good and the buffet was actually cold/ not hot...the velvet lounge/patio bar was large and good drinks. The prices were excellent. I had my hair blown dry at the salon and was underwhelmed, totally. I was expecting a blow-out hairdo for the night but what I got was a simple hair dry with no style, never had that before, anywhere! The fitness center across the street, lots of glass and was good for a hotel gym. They had spinning classes and lots of cardio but little free weights. It's within walking distance from many restaurants and pubs.
P.S. if you need to exchange money into Euros, do so at the airport.

Just back from Vidamar. Had my 15 month old son with me. Staff were extremely friendly with my son and he loved it. He made many friends with the buffet breakfast staff, the reception staff and the cleaners. Plenty of wide open spaces for my son to walk around in. Hotel also has a playroom with a couple of toys in it such as a minature slide and a large truck.

Nice walk beside the sea which starts a few minutes walk from the hotel as well.

Plenty of shops near the hotel offering different types of tours. Did not want to go on a bus tour in case my son acted up. Went on a mountain/seaside day tour with my wife and son in a landrover. Landrover driver was also great with my son.

I would recommend the hotel for anyone.

Had decided by the end of the holiday to return to Madeira later this year when the weather was slightly better.

Would recommend that you pay cash each time you get anything at the hotel and get a receipt for the payment as it could help to avoid misunderstandings at checkout .
