“A good place for vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2011

My Wife and I had a nice trip to Madeira, and a pleasant stay. The only thing we didn't like was that the receptionist refused to write a declaration telling that one of our suitcases were destroyed when we arrived the hotel.(It was destroyed during the flight to the island, and we did not see the damage until next day.But the airline accepted the picture of the damaged suitcase, so we didn't loose anything)..But the hotel itself was nice, and we enjoyed the week we stayed there

Dear Guest,
Many thanks for your kind comments posted on TripAdvisor.
Please understand the reaction of my receptionist as the damage had nothing to do with the hotel but I am glad to know that the flight company took the due responsibilities.

Hope to welcome you in a near future,

With warm regards,

Muito Obrigado

We have recently returned from our second holiday at the Eden Mar Hotel in Madeira, which is part of the Porto Mar complex. We rarely revisit the same place as we like to be left with our happy memories. Our holiday certainly did not disappoint us and we really did not want to come home.

On arrival expect a warm welcome from the wonderful staff at reception. We never felt uneasy to ask if we wanted advice or needed anything. Manuela (our favourite receptionist) even remembered us from last year - possibly because I cried as I didn't want my holiday to end.

We booked a standard room which was very spacious and comfortable, complete with a massive bed, ample room to put all belongings, (we don't travel light!), plus a well-equipped kitchenette. The kitchenette has two electric rings, fridge, with small freezer compartment, microwave, electric kettle, sink, plus crockery, utensils, pots and pans - ideal for people like us who like the freedom to prepare our own meals if desired, and eat them either on our balcony or in our room (table and chairs are provided in the room and on the balcony). Tea, coffee and sugar are topped up daily.

From our balcony we had wonderful views of the Atlantic and the hotel gardens. Bathrobes are provided in the room also, and towels for use at the pools, which can be changed at the spa whenever you wish to do so. There is also a safe in the room. A 20 euro returnable deposit is payable, and if it's your first visit there is a hire charge of 10 euros a week. If you return as members of the Prestige Club it's free and you get 10% discount on meals, drinks etc.

Everywhere in the hotel is spotlessly clean and amazingly quiet. There are four swimming pools, two of which are indoor, one heated. Plenty of sunbedsa and umbrellas are situated all over the hotel complex. A well-equipped gym is accessible on site for which there is no chrage. If you like ice cream or crepes, Dolce Lima on the promenade just under the the hotel complex is a must. Patricia who is there most days is lovely and portions are generous. As with all the bars and restaurants on site you can use your room card ro charge anything purchased to your account.

Madeira is renowned for its gardens, and the gardens in this hotel were such as we've never seen before. They muust be the best hotel gardens on the island. They are well maintained and cleverly laid out with hundreds of plants, trees, shrubs, flowers etc, most of which are labelled and those that aren't are in the process af being done. We noticed something different every time we walked round the hotel grounds. There's a garden tour on Thursdays and Cindy is usually the guide. She is very informative, interesting and funny - a must part of the holiday.

The promenade is a few minjutes' walk just beneath the hotel. If you turn right you can walk for miles, and the views are quite spectacular. Bus stops can be found a two-minute walk just up the hill from the hotel. There is a courtesy bus from the hotel to Funchal town centre and a return journey if desired, which runs a few times a day, every day. This journey is walkable and there are places en route to sit down. (possibly need this on the return as it's uphill).

A large supermarket (Pingo Doce) which would provide all your needs, is just down the hill under the hotel complex; it is open every day until 10.00pm.

I could ramble on for ever, as there is so much more to say about the hotel itself, the food in the restaurants and trips to other parts of the island. Discover it for yourself - I doubt if you'll be disappointed.

Missing you already, Eden Mar, and all your wonderful staff.

The promenade

We have just returned from our honeymoon at the Eden Mar. This is a fabulous hotel, we couldn't fault it. When we arrived we had been upgraded to a Junior Suite and there were champagne and flowers in the room. They had even sprinkled rose petals on the bed. The rom itself was well equipped and spotless. The Hotel had several pools and there was never a shortage of sunbeds. We didn't really stay in to see the entertainment on a night time as we wanted to explore and eat out. There were not many children around which is exactly what we wanted on our honeymoon. There is a cocktail happy hour between 5 and 6.30 with two different cocktails every night - well worth a try. The staff were wonderful, couldn't help us enough. Everyone was very friendly and professional at all times. We will return - maybe for our anniversary!!

We stayed for one week at the Eden Mar and the only downside was that we didn't book for 2 weeks! The staff, facilities, gardens and food were superb and their 4 star rating is certainly well justified. I was fortunate enough to stay there whilst I celebrated my birthday and the hotel management made it a very memorable day for me. The hotel is located approx 25 mins walk from Funchal city centre which is very like Lisbon but on a smaller scale. Plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. Would recommend a catamaran trip and the cable car - next time we will hire a car to fully explore this beautiful island. Don't believe the Saga reputation that this island has, it has something to offer all ages and is perfect holiday destination whether relaxing or taking in the more energetic walking routes. Good choice of restaurants nearby if you don't fancy the undulating walk into Funchal. The Bombay Palace next to the hotel serves the best Indian food we have ever had! Have thoroughly recommended the Eden Mar to everyone since we returned and we will certainly be returning asap.

This was our fourth visit to Madeira always to the Eden Mar. First time it was pot luck from a brochure, with special offer on junior suite, we were suitably impressed and have not looked anywhere else on subsequent visits.
This time our visit replaced a cancelled holiday in November, and was timed to include a significant birthday. Imagine our surprise when on arrival, at Eden Mar, we were advised that we had been upgraded to an apartment in the Residencia (Mrs J still thinks I arranged it as a surprise for her!).

The apartment was excellent, with large veranda and garden gate (ground floor) leading onto a secluded corner of the garden. No sea view, but for us this was not important, as we live in daily communion with the sea on another Atlantic island, the gardens on the other hand were, as we are not used to such impressive displays!

The hotel complex has maintained a consistently high standard over the years, staff were friendly and efficient, many have been there since our first visit. Maid service, room cleaning etc, was carried out very unobtrusively and at times to suit.

Getting more aventurous over the years we purchased multi journey bus tickets and utilised the public transport which is very efficient and cheap.. Best bargain is the number 48 to Monte, winds all over the place, with fantastic scenic views and took about an hour. Our bus broke down on one particularily steep hill, and within 10 minutes a replacement bus arrived!!! The number 20 straight down hill from Monte in the rush hour was another experience worth doing once!!

Eating out was reasonable, we found the "Old Town" to be good value and very entertaining, particularily the Chinese "Grand Muralma" and the more traditional Maderian opposite, the banter betwwwn the owners was hilarious and they appeared to pick up equal shares of the passing trade. We ate at both, circa 45 euros for two with wine and coffee. Chinese was particulary tasty!

Went to Casino dinner and Show, very enjoyable, not cheap but not over the top either.

We booked via travel agent and were with Thomsons, pick up for return transfer to airport, failed to find us at the hotel ! However hotel arranged taxi, and advised local rep, we were met at airport by the rep who paid the taxi and apologised for the no show,so really a good result all round.
We will return, although a junior suite will never be quite the same again!!

We have been to the Eden Mar six times but the first time in June when the sun was at it highest. We have always been impressed but this was our best holiday yet.
After 6 years ago going to a nearby 5 star hotel (not The Cliff Bay) that we did not like, we tried the Eden Mar and have never looked back. We were there in Feb 2010 just after the floods on the island, this last New Years and again this June 2011.
The Eden Mar and its staff are excellent in all respects and it is a holiday of comfort, excellent service, four swimming pools and a sheltered place with the most beautiful gardens to relax and laze away the time..
The restaurants, their staff and food quality are excellent, especially the Alfama (a new fish evening) and the Med (a new steak evening).
We would recommend it to all that wish a quality holiday.

Dear Sirs,

It so rewarding to know that even after 6 times staying in the same hotel we have been able to meet your expectations.
Also thank you for “promoting” the “new venues” that we are doing in Alfama & Med restaurant once a week. It is one of our goals to use local products that can make a difference in what we offer to the guests of Vila Porto Mare and at the same time “break” the routine in terms of fixed menus in all the different outlets we have within the resort.

Hope to meet you on your 7th visit...

Muito Obrigado,

Best regards

We stayed here for 11 nights from May 30th to June 10th and i must say it was excellent. We love Madeira and this was our 3rd visit to this beautiful island because we enjoy the levada walks and exploring the 'real madeira'. We previously stayed at the Madeira Regency cliff hotel not far away from the Eden Mar and the Quinta Monte up in the hills and both these were very good hotels also but all 3 were very different in there own ways. The Eden Mar was spotless, the rooms cleaned every day, the kitchenette was excellent as we could store water and cheese/meet in the large fridge which was handy for when we went walking. The rooms were very spacious, swimming pools very good although outside ones were VERY cold and the gardens beautifully kept. We stayed on a self catering basis because we like eating at different places each night but i read some others comments on here before we went saying that the Barracuda restaurant, just down the road was good? Don't do it! No, to be honest we never ate there but it gave us the impression of being greasy joes cafe. Where we did find exceptional food at a very good price was the Italian Restaurant located as you turn right out of reception and only 25mtrs down the road. Pizzas and pasta was excellent and the pizzas massive. If you're not a big eater ask for 1 between 2. We over ate some nights and had 2 starters, 2 pizzas or pasta and a pancake or icecream each + a couple of drinks for around £30. Excellent value compared with other restaurants in the area. Then take into account the supermarket located behind the Eden Mar where you can buy any bits you've forgotten or like we did, cheese, water and meat for our walking picnic plus of course the 6 bottles of local beer for a little over £1.50 (be rude not too at that price) and it really was an excellent hotel. We wanted to go back to the casino show which is really good but the meal awful but it was around £50 each this time but when we enquired at the information office at the top of the hill they offered us 2 free tickets if we visited a nearby hotel for an hour tour of an 'options' property. Initial reaction was, no way not time share but to be very honest there was nil pressure what so ever to buy and they never even took our address. We spent a little over an hour looking around this nearby hotel and it was really interesting but we had no intentions of buying, they knew this and were not at all bothered, they gave us our free tickets to the show and we had a really good time with a meal and free wine included. Overall, although the weather was a bit hit and miss (but you don't go to Madeira for sun) we had an exceptioal honeymoon and they even put fresh rose pettles on our bed when we arrived and complimentary flowers and bottle of bubbly in the room which was a lovely touch. Thankyou everyone and we will be returning in the future.
