On our 3rd visit to Madeira we finally booked the ferry to Porto Santo - What a wonderful day out!
The trip was arranged by our Thomson rep at a cost of 118 euros pp - this included collection & return by taxi from our hotel, the ferry journey of approximately 21/2 hours, an island tour followed by lunch, then 5 hours free time before the ferry departs at 8pm.
Firstly I should say that everything was on time & I mean exactly!
The ferry is spotlessly clean & bright with pleasant seating areas both inside & out. Having missed breakfast at our hotel, we bought freshly made rolls & coffee - delicious & reasonably priced.
The journey out can be a little choppy about halfway, something to do with the current, it doesn't last long & although I am usually sea sick I had no problem. This does not occur on the return journey.
The tour by minibus, holding 10, makes several interesting stops for photos - beautiful views.
At approx 1pm we arrived at the Salinas Restaurant for lunch, occuping a round table seating 10.
The decor is very pleasant & the meal excellent - salad, choice of meat, fish or pasta with varied vegetables, a selection of desserts, red/white wine, beer, water & coffee. Beautifully cooked & served.
Free time to enjoy the small village or beach of around 5 hours before re-joining the ferry ready to sail at 8pm.
Enjoyed a light snack on board watching the fabulous sunset, docking about 10.30 & arriving back at our hotel at 11pm - a long day but thoroughly enjoyable, so glad we did it.
Couple of handy tips - you can upgrade to 1st class for 11euros pp, not sure exactly how you benefit, although the lounge looked beautiful it didn't seem really necessary.
Take beach towels if you intend to use the beach/swim - there are some beach umbrellas (not enough) & a shortage of loungers.
