“Brilliant - even in January”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014

We had a lovely day here - after taking the cable car, we spent a long time in the gardens which are fantastic and it's also worth seeing the museum collection of minerals and the African sculptures.

The views around the garden are fantastic and if you go for a coffee in the restaurant, then don't forget to pick p the free glass of Madeira that goes with it !

It's worth picking up a map (which has two trails - one for plants and one for art) - we followed the plant trail first and saw some wonderful orchids as well as lots of other interesting plants. We then took in the parts of the art trail that didn't overlap with the plant trail to cover the whole garden. I guess in the end we spent 3 hours or more having a lovely time.

“understated gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014

Museum of African sculptures fantastic! Buddha garden well laid out! Tiles depicting Portuguese history wonderfully displayed as you meander in the rainforest canopy of palms and ferns with orchids in borders! Water fountains spouting forth near the old palace and waterfalls trickling done at intervals create the whole ambience of the rainforest! Very spiritual!

“Tropical plants from all around the world.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014

Do not be put off by the steepness of the gardens, they are actually very easy to walk through with a small pleasant restaurant with superb views down to the harbour in Funchal.

“Not worth the money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2014

We visited in January but the only plants we could see were ferns. It's extremely hilly and although we are fit 60 year olds the thought of climbing back up to the exit put us off.

“PLEASANT COUPLE OF HOURS”

Not too much colour in January but pleasant to walk around. Don't forget your free wine tasting at the cafe.
