Owner description: The gardens at "Quinta do Palheiro" are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Madeira has long been called the "Garden Isle" and it seems that almost anything will grow in its fertile soil. The Palheiro gardens are situated at about 500 meters above sea level and were started in 1801 by the original owner the Conde de Carvalhal. He introduced Camellias to the Island, hence our vast collection. The gardens, some 14 hectares (with about 650 species of plants),include the Camellia avenue, Main Garden, Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Long Border and the Ladies' Garden where you find the tea house. There is also the Ribeiro do Inferno, a deep valley with treeferns and indigenous plants.

“Nice Gardens, but others are better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

First of all, I want to say that these are beautiful gardens. They have a lot of color and much nice flora. But overall, they did not seem to be manicured as well, or organized as well, or as sizable as the other major gardens around Funchal. Despite this, it is a nice place to spend part of a day enjoying the gardens and the views.

If you have only a short time in Madeira to visit gardens... Then the Monte Palace Gardens should be at the top of the list... Second would be the Botanical Gardens... and the Palheiro Gardens would place third.

And if you love orchids... Then Quinta da Boa Vista Gardens should be at the top of your list.

But to tell the truth... You cannot go wrong visiting any of these gardens in Madeira. They are all wonderful.

“Uninspiring and over-priced in winter”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

Others have commented on the high entrance fees and truly the expense is not worth during the winter months. Far better to take the bus to Canico and visit the marvellous, extensive and entirely free gardens of the well-named Quinta Splendida which even in December had plenty of blooms to admire. The gardens overlook the sea and there is a nice bar serving light refreshments within. The Quinta is a hotel and 'Wellness Centre' catering mainly to a German clientele.

“Great garden”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

We liked this best of the Funchal area gardens that we visited. Not particularly for the variety of plants, but because what they do do they do really nicely, and it looks beautiful. And the tea room was very reasonable.
