“Look for the stuffed cat!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

If you are into plants and flowers this is for you. We can take it or leave such places, but did find this one a pleasant diversion. The parrots and other birds were nice, but we still laugh at memories of the stuffed cat in the small natural history museum within the grounds. It is on the top shelf of the room to the right. The look on its face is classic. Check it out! There are some nice big cacti too in the gardens.

“A good way to spend a morning”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

We took a taxi to the gardens as its a long hilly walk otherwise. It was 5 euros to get in and worth the money. Lots of plants, colours and pretty decorative bedding. A very big tortoise that did not look real but it was. The were many birds, parrots, peacocks and some lovely doves. The cafe was basic but had a great view. We then got the cable car to Monte which was 8 euros one way and 12 euros return. It was very cloudy when we were on the cable car, so the views were a bit restricted. It was interesting being up in the clouds though!

“Breathtaking views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Madeira is the most beautiful island I have visited. Travel up in the Cable car and look down over funchal and the coast whilst meandering around the lush Botanical garden. A must for everyone.

“Spectacular place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

What a lovely place to visit. Either use the cable car or bus to get here. The array of plants is spectacular and there is something for all seasons of the year.

“We much preferred this to the Monte Palace Garden”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Having been disappointed by the Monte Palace Garden (which we thought was more of an arboretum ,with few flowers), we were delighted to find the Botanic Garden was much more open with many flower beds, a fascinating collection of cactuses, an attractively located cafe and small ponds next to the cafe with amazingly loud croaking frogs! At the lower end of the garden there is a large aviary with many interesting birds, though we were sad to see them cooped up rather than in the wild. There are good views towards the town and the sea. Labelling was good and certainly better than at the Monte Palace Garden. We did not manage to get to the Jardins do Palheiro ( the Blandy's Garden) so are not sure if this is even better, but we did visit the much smaller Magic Garden close to the seafront promenade below the Forum Shopping Mall at the west end of hotel zone. This is relatively tiny, but has may interesting plants.
