There appears to be a lack of money to maintain the paths and other "hard" features of this garden. Still well worth a visit for the measly entrance charge but disappointing to see the continued crumbling and decay.
On the small side as gardens go but not a bad display of plants - we went in January so garden wasn't at it's best
Views are spectacular.
Some paths are very steep and surface underfoot is poor in some places.
Conditions for caged birds were very poor with bare cages and little to interest the birds.
Lots of room for improvement
Beautiful formal and informal planting. Lovely palm trees. Views over Funchal and out to sea from the cafe. Liked the birds in the aviaries but some needed more space.
We took the cable car from Monte and spent half a day wandering around. The cafe had fantastic views over Funchal. The gardens were beautiful with fantastic flower displays.
The gardens are small but if you want to spend a relaxing, quiet hour or so just gently walking around these pretty gardens then do it, you won't be disappointed. They may not be as big and as grand as some botanical gardens, but it was nice just to be able to take your time, draw breath and enjoy the scenery, I wasn't too fussed about the bird aviaries at first but then I saw some beautiful birds that I had never seen before, so that turned out to be worthwhile too.
