“Nothing to Write Home About”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

Pleasant enough stroll, very little atmosphere, went during the day, beggars and restaurant staff plying for trade a bit put offing. In the evening extremly quiet. True no Starbucks but there is a Big Macs and a Pizza Hut.

“You can't miss it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

The main road next to the sea in Funchal. Although there is currently massive construction work going on, it will be a greatly improved marina when it is complete. It has a nice promenade for a stroll and clean toilets if you need them.

“Main road for picking up buses and coaches.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

This road is where all bus services can be picked up and where all buses finish. Ticket kiosks and transport help is plentiful. Currently the side of the road adjacent to the sea is a massive building site where flood defence measures and storm repairs are being carried out. Large Lorries and bulldozers seem to work around the clock so it is not really somewher to stay too long.

“Under construction + MacDonalds/Pizza Hut = not win”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a place, but I prefer the streets that are more inland - not under construction, better restaurants, and more things to see..

“It has to be done.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

Walk here every day. A visit to Funchal is not complete without a walk along this Avenida. Not tacky at all, just Funchal 2012 (at least there's NO Starbucks). Lots going on at the moment including building a new marina and cruise ship berth. An excellent place to watch liners come and go (at all times of the day), small boats in the marina and the odd fisherman trying his best. Fabulous place for 'Bolo do Caco', Madeira's garlic bread (do try) and chestnuts when in season. The South American band play along here nearly every day creating a great atmosphere. A very good place to start the 'Red & Yellow' hop on, hop off tours. Timeshare people are all but gone so the only thing to be aware of as in any seaside in the world is the coffee, food and beers is a little more expensive than a few streets back.
