4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

We were at reids for afternoon tea last sun ,the hotel is beautiful, the view from the balcony stunning, however we were disappointed with various things ,the butter was pre packed, the jam was in jars and the cakes were very plain ,overall we did not think it was value for money,

Having visited Reid's Palace for lunch on a previous visit to this 'Charming Hotel', we opted for their famed Afternoon Tea on the Tea Terrace.

Having made our booking, and arrived in good time, our table was already set and waiting.

We opted for the glass of champagne to start and this set the scene for an unforgettable afternoon. The choices of tea were many. The Sandwiches, Scones and Variety of Cakes were just 'scrumptious'!

The staff were impeccable. We also had a walk round their beautiful gardens which complimented our visit and made the overall experience an absolute joy.

Yes , afternoon tea with champagne was a little expensive , but the gorgeous , historic surroundings , courteous staff and well presented tasty food made it worth every penny. Refills of tea and more sandwiches, scones and cakes were offered readily. Formal dress is required but makes everything feel a little special. Refined, genteel and quaint. We were made to feel very welcome and came away feeling we'd had a lovely experience.

Had a wonderful afternoon tea, and although very expensive, the experience was lovely, beautiful surroundings, smart attentive friendly staff, I marked it down one star only because the butter and preserves were served in portion controlled containers not on for the high standard of the hotel, and the high quality and price charged. Otherwise a lovely experience.

The Hotel is absolutely wonderful! The balcony, the gardens, the view, the swimming pool, the staff, the rooms, everything is cured in the slightest details to allow you to really experience the luxury and charm of an impeccable Grand Hotel. The dinner at Villa Cipriani was surely one of the best I have ever had. And to lay sunbathing on a chair by the sea, earing only the sound of the sea against the rocks with an amazing view over Funchal is simply mesmerizing!

The almost unanimously glowing reviews don't need repeating, so I will just make observations that haven't had much coverage.
We stayed in the "new" part of the hotel, in a spacious suite on the 6th (top) floor. It had everything you might desire, except tea/coffee making facilities. When we phoned down for a kettle, it arrived, with a tray of teapots, cups etc within a few minutes. The bathroom had a large tub and separate shower cubicle with old fashioned taps. Our double balcony was well equipped with sunbeds as well as a table and seats for taking a drink. It gets the morning sun, but the "old" building shades it from about noon. The rooms in the old building face due south but may not be as well equipped. The 6th floor is half a dozen steps up from the lift landing.
You take the lift to level 0 for the sumptuous breakfast and a further walk or lift down another level to the pools and for lunch. The pool area is expertly tended and loungers are placed just where you want them; there is a service bell at each position for ordering drinks or whatever else.
Dinner is served in the Faune French restaurant in the Old building or the Italian Villa Cipriano, a two minute walk along the car parking area. These are fairly formal (but ties are not required). In the Faune, we found the cooking to be a little heavy, but tasty. In Villa Cipriano, food was really disappointing. We were so surprised on our initial visit, that we went again later in the week in case the first time was "chef's night off". Unfortunately, the second impression confirmed the first. The wines that we drank in both restaurants were superb and reasonably priced.
Reid's organises a variety of events in the hotel, and excursions around the island. We attended an excellent concert in the municipal theatre by the Madeira Classical Orchestra (complimentary tickets in the stalls - but for those who are interested, the sound is better in a 2nd level box). The walking tours are expensive, but the groups are much smaller than the cheaper outside offerings.
The hotel is expensive by local standards, but not when compared to equivalently luxurious establishments elsewhere in Europe.
This is an easy place to enter into conversation and even make friends. So we discovered that many guests were regular visitors, some over many years. About half the guests are quite ild, but there were also many young families with children, mostly very well behaved indeed.
Staff in all departments of the hotel are cheerful and go out of their way to be of help - a tribute to some fine recruitment and training.

Room Tip: worth discussing with reception before choosing a room. All have good views/

My husband had booked this for our summer break with our 3 year old daughter. Upon arrival we were shown to our room which was beautiful and had lovely little touches to welcome our daughter, toiletries, teddy, slippers etc. We found the staff extremely helpful and the atmosphere was lovely. My daughter happily played at the pool as I visited the wonderful spa for a massage. We often went for drinks of a evening and were looked after and found they were accommodating with my daughter. I am very pleased with our stay at this fine establishment
