“An attractive traditional restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

This is probably the most beautiful restaurant in Funchal. The prices are on the expensive side and the menu options limited but the experience is truly first class. The exterior frontage and interior are as attractive as any you will see; the trouble that has been gone to to make this a visually pleasing visit (especially the blue and white tiles) is exceptional. The food is well prepared and presented. A non menu item - passion fruit mousse - was one of the best desserts every tasted. My rating would be 5 stars but for the relatively high prices.

“SUPER RESTAURANT SLIGHTLY OFF THE BEATEN TRACK”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

We visited this restaurant, slightly hidden away up a side road in the Old Town of Funchal by chance. The menu was extensive enough to suit our party of 8 with differing tastes and the food was well cooked and very tasty. Just a small intimate style of restaurant in which the decor is quite beautiful and the ambience select but friendly. We particularly liked the fact that they provide complimentary transport from your hotel in town both to and from the restaurant leaving you free to enjoy the local wines on offer. The enjoyment of the evening was aided by the guitar duo entertainment. Overall a very pleasant holiday dining experience and although perhaps a little more expensive than many restaurants in the area, it is well worth a try.

“Once Bitten!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

No amount of good-guitarists can compensate for poor food. Especially when the sound is highly amplified fore ground music, not back ground music.
Sadly this visit was an expensive mistake.
A starter describe as Fruits of the Season with smoked meats arrived as one slice of melon, one dessert spoon size of air dried ham, two limp lettuce leaves and half a cherry tomato. Priced at a mouth watering 12.50 euros.
Main courses were acceptable,but ordinary.
Apple pie, a British stalwart arrived cremated with almost liquid ice cream.
Avoid! The worst 90 euros I have spent in my life.

“lovely experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Situated in the little side street of Old Town Funchal, this picturesque blue tiled restaurant is very special and pretty.
Welcoming staff , beautifully laid tables and good service, though the food was average apart from the delicious orange dessert.Mmmmm !
The entertainment, Juan Caldarado, an excellent trio of 2 guitarists and a sort of box drummer, was just right , encouraging the guests to join in with tambourines etc. A very memorable and enjoyable evening

“Fine dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

The exterior of this restaurant caught our eye as we were strolling in the old town area. Owner invited us inside for a look...it was stunning. She gave us a leaflet and explained if we booked we can be picked up at hotel and taken back at end of evening by complimentary transport .
A few night later we were strolling round the old town deciding where to eat. Most of the restaurants had staff on the door trying to entice you in-many of them somewhat overbearing!!!! We decided to see if we could get in at Casa Portuguesa even though we hadn't booked. Got the last table and had a fabulous meal with excellent service and entertainment .Enjoyed it so much we booked again for the following week and took advantage of the free transport.
Quieter on our 2nd visit but just as enjoyable. Cannot praise this restaurant highly enough. Guitarist who plays is fabulous-would pay serious money to see a concert like that elsewhere!
