“no vegetarian main course”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

We stayed in the Vine Hotel of which this is the main restaurant on the roof terrace. The staff were excellent, the setting was awesome, but the food let it down.

“Overpriced but great city view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

The food is overpriced and disappointing and whatever you do don't accept the offer of a glass of champagne upon arrival without asking for the wine list prices first (Two glasses for 30 euros is just ridiculous). The food sounds great but is not cooked well especially the fish dishes and the accompanying vegetables and sauces leave a lot to be desired. The entrance area to the restaurant lift is shabby and unwelcoming and needs a re-think. Much better quality elsewhere in Funchal at a fraction of the cost. Plus points are the friendly staff and the stunning views but the whole experience is let down by the food and the price.

“overcomplicated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

Every course seemed to come with a side dish of some soupy consomme. The chef is trying too hard to be nouveau cuisine rather than just making great food.

The good was above average but just lacked that special quality.

Compared to other restaurants in Funchal - above average.
Compared to other restaurants in Europe - average

“Good food, great view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

I went there just because I couldn't be bothered to go any further after yet another day walking the levadas (staying in the hotel). The night-time view from the top floor is very nice, although it is even better by the pool. Food was ~reasonably priced, although not the best I have had in Funchal. Some caviar to start with (ok, I suppose), then celery salad with soup on the side (good), duck et al (bit unimaginative, overcooked to my taste), and then ice cream + peppermint cake thingy for dessert (again good, but not great). The service was attentive, and friendly, so definitely place to hang around, and enjoy the view, the food was the weakest link of the triangle. I don't regret going, but probably picking different restaurant tomorrow with hopefully bit more imaginative menu ;)

Pool bar is unfortunately closed in winter months (it seems), although the view from there's superior to that from the restaurant.

“Good food with an awesome view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

This restaurant is at the rooftop of Hotel The Vine, a Design Hotel in centre of Funchal town.
It's a very nice restaurant, with huge glass windows to Funchal harbour, so when there are cruises (very often) you get a close view to the ships.
The food is very good, international cuisine with a special touch of regional ingredients, like the foie gras I had with a Madeira wine jelly (see photo), which was absolutely delicious.
Staff is nice and helpful when suggesting you some specials.
Atmosphere is elegant yet very cosy. Tables are disposed and with good space between them. There are several tables for two, so couples can enjoy being left alone. However, there were also tables for groups (maybe 8 to 10 people, not sure)
On summer nights, the outside terrace is the most desired place to eat, so you better make a reservation.
After dinner, the outside bar right next to the restaurant is a must with its astonishing view of Funchal amphitheatre and the long narrow pool (quite urban style!), surely one of the best places to be on Reveillon to see the fireworks.
