Steep climb from the town to get here. This was the only place in Madeira where I saw mosquitoes – maybe that explains why I was the only person there. You need to follow the directions of the room wardens to find your way round. A glass and steel building contains the history of tiles which I didn’t find very interesting though there were some good Dutch tiles on the top floor. The garden is very small but does contain a gazebo were ladies used to take tea, chat and look for ships coming in. The house itself contained heavy old furniture, a room full of teapots and jugs and a library. I liked the internal winter sun room.
